Title: Renaissance Samples
Post by: SV52 on 26 June 2018, 12:16:05 PM
Still trying to fill holes in Renaissance line-up.  Ordered a small mixed bag of Lansknechts to have a look (thanks Leon) and a pack what I plan to use as reiters.

The Landsknechts don't look too daunting to paint and the 30 years war guys are ideal, the pikes may be a bit short for taste but I don't mind, easier to handle than the ER Scots. Pendraken pike added to a reiter as a standard pole. Mid brown wash over a white undercoat to bring up the detail.

Thanks for the images and I imagine they will look great once painted 8). Some nice figures poses there too.

I have a question, and althugh slightly frivilous it's a genuine appeal for information.

What did they call the 30 Years War in 1618?

Which part of it? The "Thirty Years War" was a mass of overlapping, intertwined conflicts with ever-changing alliances on all sides and was itself a part of the 'Wars of Religion', starting with the German Peasant's War, in the early 16th century, and arguably ending with Cromwell's conquest of Ireland in 1651.

I doubt they called it anything at the time, after all for some it was the continuation of the eighty years war which started in 1568 between the Dutch and the Spanish.  likely it was just 'the war'.

A very useful set of photos.

Is it LAN5 on the second row on the right, and if so what weapon are they carrying.

I've a good number of the pikemen and they paint up fairly easily. I'm not a fan of the crouching pose with the 2 handed sword though.

I think the Landsknechts could do with a complete overhaul at some point, more poses and better sculpts.  The current ones are quite nice and they paint up well, but they're lacking in pose variety.

Yup, LAN5 with arquebus in right shoulder arms.

They could do with a do-over right enough, the swordsman would have been better in a similar pose to the rest, but what the hey.

Good reference pics!

I wondered if the two handed swordsman was originally going to be a third pike with it levelled out as a front tanker?

It's the same pose as the artilleryman carrying the cannon ball and the ER list highland swordsman.

Reuse of a dolly then? He's a decent pose for hefting a cannonball but much less suitable for a swordsman. I do think he'd look ok with a pikenthough!

Thanks for the feedback folks. I'll risk posting a pic of them painted in the fullness of time, DVWP.

They paint up very nicely - just a shame there's so few poses!

Although amongst the landsknechts there are plenty of posers.

Which seemed to be a point of contention between them and the Swiss, or so I've read. Mind you I don't think I'd like to get between either of them.

If they were wearing jackets with sleeves, it was a military ARMS RACE!

I must put in my own two-thalers' worth and say I really like the chap with the Zweihaender.
