Title: Horse tack
Post by: OldenBUA on 17 June 2018, 02:36:31 PM
Horse tack, what's the purpose of it? To keep a guy from falling off a horse? I don't think so. I think it's sole purpose is to aggravate us poor guys that are painting it. Or are you? Do you bother painting all the little straps and belts? (There's bound to be a more technical term, but I really don't care). Anyway, almost done, on with the last bits.

Isn't it like blu-tak and used for sticking horses to walls?

At this moment I share your grief, on the last of three cavalry units.

Yep, I hate painting all of the tack as it's damned tricky with my shaky hand :(

Agreed but it has to be done. However, what about brown horses with similar coloured tack and black horses with black tack. That might speed things along a little.

I leave them as black undercoat, and touch up as necessary at the end of the painting process.

I used to hate painting horses but have a found a way
to do it that i'm happy with and now stick to it like glue
(every horse is a clone).

Essentially, undercoat in black and just paint the horse flesh,
leaving the tail, mane & tack black.   Finally, just add a couple
of highlights to the flesh and its done.   I now quite enjoy
painting horses.

Too true, especially on a bad day :(

No, never really bothers me as I see a horse as just another figure, so always try to do them justice. But I know many do feel they are a pain to paint.

If you are not painting horse tack then you are not doing it properly.

Hang your heads in shame.

It is amazing how much horse tack is brown leather rather than black.

Depends - where possible (and eapeciallly formpersonal stiff) I third Glorfindal and Mollinary! Or if I'm doing a "cheating base colour > magic wash" speedy job it's amazing how many horses are dusty brown with dusty brown tack and shade tone ;)

For client stuff (or colourful medieval stuff) it depends - sometimes you have to bite the bullet ;)
