It's back! After a year off, the 2018 Pendraken Painting Competition opens to entries on July 1st and will run all the way through until the end of the month. Our previous competitions have been a fantastic showcase for what can be done in this scale and we're looking forward to seeing the entries this year.
As mentioned, the competition will run throughout July, giving everyone ample time to get your entries posted but make sure you've got it done by midnight on July 31st.
We've made some changes to the category rules this year, allowing a larger number of figures in the foot and mounted categories now. This means that you can line up a full unit of several bases and enter them together.
Categories:
Foot - Pre-20th C. - Max: 40 figures, on either a single base, multiple bases, or in a movement tray.
Foot - 20th C. - Max: 40 figures, on either a single base, multiple bases, or in a movement tray.
Mounted - Max: 20 figures, on either a single base, multiple bases, or in a movement tray.
Vehicle - Min: 1 / Max: 3 vehicles on or off bases.
Fantasy & Sci-Fi - Max: 40 figures, on either a single base, multiple bases, or in a movement tray.
Open - Single Base - Anything which doesn't fit into the other categories, with a max base size of 100x100mm. This could be a command base, a single figure, artillery base, etc.
Open - Army - Anything which is larger than the maximums in the other categories, so multiple units or a whole army.
If you're unsure which category to put your entry in, let us know what it is, and we'll point you in the right direction!
Rules - Please Read!
- Firstly, all figures must be Pendraken. Conversions are allowed, but only on our figures.
1. You must be a Forum member to enter, but other than that, everyone is welcome!
2. You may enter as many times as you like but each entry is only allowed 2 images (except for the 'Army!' category, see below). We do not allow montage images anymore, just to keep a level playing field. You can however edit your two images into a single file for the sake of uploading/hosting them. If you have any difficulty posting pics, they can be emailed to Pendraken and we'll put them up for you.
3. The 'Open - Army!' category may have 5 photo's, as it's difficult to cover a whole army with just a single photo!
4. All entries must be your own work, and have not been entered into any online competitions before.
5. Entries should have been completed in the time since the last competition (February 2016), so we hope you've all been busy!
6. You can post WIP (work-in-progress) photos if you wish, but please create a new thread for these. You can also post extra photos of your work elsewhere on the Forum. These will not count towards your competition entry.
7. This year, the winners will be decided by the Forum members! Once the closing deadline has passed, we'll put up a poll thread for each category where our members can vote on who they want to win. The polls will close 7 days later and the winners will be announced.
8. Competition threads will be created on the opening date, purely for your entries.
9. Pendraken may use your pics in future promo/marketing, catalogue covers or web pics. Entering gives your permission for your pics to be used.
And now the good bit, the prizes! We don't have any third-party prizes this time around, so we've bumped up the prize pots instead! The winners and runners-up in each category will now receive the following:
- The Winner of each category will receive £40 worth of Pendraken/Minibits credit!
- The Runner-Up of each category will receive £20 worth of Pendraken/Minibits credit!
So, key points:
Competition opens - July 1st!
Closing deadline - Midnight, July 31st!
There's still time to order any extra figures you need, so get your orders in to us asap to make sure they arrive in good time!
And that should be it, if there's any questions, let us know!
Great to see the comp back in all its glory and with some rather nice prizes :). This will (hopefully) get me to pull my finger out and get painting :D
Thanks for organising this Leon :)
Great! I got some acw and wwII stuff lying around, waiting to be painted!
Glad to see the return of the painting comp, and also to see a slight change in format. The prizes are nice too!
Looks great. Thanks for doing this again.
Might get my painting hat on.
Is it like Goya's painting hat?

Looking forward to taking part in this
Take care
Andy
This'll be my first time in the competition as I embark on a lifetime worth of painting 10mm figs :)
Richard
Great!!! Let me see what I can do. Not a lot of time, but I'll give it my best shot.
Terry
Terry37, I draw your attention to rule 5
QuoteEntries should have been completed in the time since the last competition (February 2016), so we hope you've all been busy![
I'm sure you've a few suitable things you've painted in the last couple of years ;)
Woohoo!
Sadly no Paul, I've been working on my 15 MM HOTT Muscovite army, but I'll switch gears and start something which I can only hope to finish in time.
Terry
OK, I spent last night going through all of my possible projects for a model to enter in this years event and have made a decision. It will be a conversion, but not as extensive as others I've done and shared. But ti will be fun as will the rest of the army I will do to go along with it. Going to start the fun shortly! it may also end up being my army for this years GBnUIT as well.
Terry
My order is in, as is traditional, for me, only figures painted during the competition will be entered! ;)
Awwwww......Will.
It's not as f you haven't painted much in the past twelve months.......Sheesh ! ;)
Cheers - Phil
Where would you categorise a mechanised infantry platoon, i.e. carriers with dismounted passengers?

If it was a single base I'd put it in the Open - Single Base category, if it's several bases then probably in the Vehicle category.
Just to be clear, stuff entered in the Paint Off last year, can be entered in this Painting Comp?
I was just scrolling back through my photos to see what I had painted, and what could be an entry, and realised that the Paint Off was within the date range (i.e. post Feb 2016).

Yep, anything since the last Painting Comp in Feb 2016.
Remember folks, last year was just a bit of fun.
This year, it's back!
Doing a new model for this one and it is progressing nicely. I think I have most of the major conversion work done, but will see where I am in the morning after I've filed and sanded the putty filler. This is fun and exciting, and it is also dictating what army i will be doing in this years GBnUIT Tournament. As it is a conversion project, I will do a "How I Did It" after the contest is over, but this one is not near the work required on some of the others, but is one that's been in the queue waiting it's turn - this contest just brought it to the top.

Is there a prize for the best diorama?
I understand that it would be the movement tray, yes?
Quote from: Jesus on 22 June 2018, 09:55:41 AM
Is there a prize for the best diorama?
It would depend on what kind of diorama? If it is a small base then it can go in the 'Single Base' category, or if there are small numbers of figures then you could put it in the 'Foot' or 'Cavalry' categories. If it is a big base or a lot of figures then it would need to go in the 'Army' category.

Perfect, thanks
Awesome!! This has finally tempted me out from under the rock wherein I have lurked for far too long!! ;D
And the 2018 Pendraken Painting Competition is now officially open! Get your entries in and good luck to everyone!

Congratulations to the first entrant FSN :o ;)
Thank you. :D
Those troops are amazingly well camouflaged - must have taken you ages!
;D ;D ;D
Hedging my bets; can I label it "Sherwood Foresters in a bush war"? :D
Best entry so far, even if I do say so myself.
I have finished my 1695 French army using the fabulous LOA range, and I am halfway through the allies.
Have not been able to reduce the photos on my IPad enough to load on here.
How does emailing them through work?
Do I have to create a post first?
Cheers, Bryan

If you don't have any image hosting accounts (Flickr, Imgur, etc) or a blog/Facebook page, then you can email them over to us here (leon @ pendraken .co .uk) and I can upload them to our Flickr account for you. You would then create your entry post and I'll edit the pictures in for you.
I've sent you a couple, not being altogether sure which category they belong in.
Best Treant army goes to FSN!

I've got those now, they'd gone to the old email address. I'll get them sorted out and uploaded for you on Wednesday.

I hope you realise I'm going to count that as a half vote? :D
Actually I may have another entry - Stonewall ... well just stone wall actually.
Maybe not.
They're not as good as my bush.
I'm slightly worried that I'm still the only entrant. That means that what's coming is going to be really, really, REALLY good.

FSN is no longer lonely! ;D ;D
Hope to get a few more things finished, for the fun of entering!
Very nice entry Sir.
=D> =D> =D>
Unfortunately as far as Pendraken 10s are concerned I have not been that busy. However I have produced some extra SYW units since 2016 so I shall enter them (mainly so folk can just look at them).
Do planes go in the vehicle category?
Can't see where else they might go, unless they are Open!

That's what I thought, but worth checking. Hopefully tomorrow I'll get some tanks finished in terms of drybrushing and applying decals. Then time permitting, will take some 'photos for the comp.
Are TB Line figures allowed to be entered, seeing as they are now Pendraken owned (if not yet produced)?

I think we can allow that, yep.
Had one more entry, failed to get it done on time! Don't think i'll manage with 1 day left!
This is probably a stupid question and I have most probably not read something somewhere or misinterpreted it. Most likely.
However I'll ask anyway.... it says "2. You may enter as many times as you like but each entry is only allowed 2 images".
Now... I have three tanks that I am weighing up here for the Vehicles section- I was looking to pick my best and submit that- but on re-reading the above does it mean that I can enter all three? (A WW1 Gun Carrier/ a modified Conway/ a Centurion Mk1 all on different bases, obviously) .
Cheers

Yep, so the Gun Carrier would be entry 1, the Conway would be entry 2, and the Cent would be entry 3. You're allowed 2 images per entry and if you can make a new post for each entry as well, it makes it easier to keep track of.

Cool. I'll get some more photos taken then! And the sun has reappeared too, which should make them better.
Camera battery dead and dull and cloudy this evening. Fingers crossed tomorrow will be better...
And that's it, thanks to everyone who has entered this year's competition! The voting threads will be open from 3pm on Wednesday 1st August and will run for 1 week, closing at 3pm on Wednesday 8th. Everyone will be allowed 3 votes per category so you can choose your 3 favourite entries and winners will be revealed as soon as the voting ends!
Voting is now open folks so you've got until 3pm on Wednesday 8th August to place your votes!
8)
Blimey, that was hard! My votes are in.
Same here, Will...... :)
GENUINELY....I promise.....This has been even harder to sort out than in previous years.....when yours truly, along with 4 or 5 other 'judges'....have had to give 3-2-1 points to what we've 'decided' are the best entrants.
Like I said before.....It sounds so condescending/patronizing.....But it truly does get harder and harder to 'split' all these superb entries.
I take my hat off, to you ALL. (I hate you ;))...'cos you can paint better than I could decades ago, when I reckoned I was a decent paint dauber.
Plaudits to one and all of you all !
Cheers - Phil
I've voted on the 'easy' ones, which were not easy at all. I've left the truly difficult ones until I've got time to through them in detail. This year I think the level of skill on show is exceptional.
