With the recent weather here in the UK, many of you may be considering sacrificing a close friend or family member to the fire-god Huehueteotl... So to help you scratch that itch, we've got some Aztecs!
These have been a long-term project and are the result of endless requests, nudges and downright pestering by our Forum's own Fierce Kitty. But credit where credit's due, he's provided all of the help and guidance as we worked through the range and his efforts have now been rewarded!
The Aztecs were a Mesoamerican culture in central Mexico from 1300 until 1521. For most of this period the various tribes fought amongst each other until the arrival of the Spanish in 1517, leading to a short period of conflict and ultimately the conquest of the indigenous population by the European colonists.

I've edited the product listing to include the info that FK sent us:
These backbanners were worn by everyone except the commoners (who would probably have been executed if they had!) They were enormously varied, possibly relying on individual preference. So there's a lot of scope for homemade banners as well if people fancy a challenge!

Thanks for that, we'll get those sorted out!
Well, I have to admire those sculpts.
Well done, Techno.
The sculpts look superb, but way beyond my painting skills or patience.
I look forward to seeing some of FKS when he has painted them. I am sure they will look stunning en-masse.
They deserve to sell a veritable shed load!
Lovely sculpts.
Shall be sending in my order the minute my Minoans and Thracians are done. Those look first class. :)

I think it didn't like the Size brackets being on the outside, so I transferred them to the middle and it seemed to work.

Any time, any time. I'm looking forward to comparing pix and lists, and in time AAR.
Perusing the forum after a bit of a sabbatical, my eye was offended by a new range of "Aztecs" in the Renaissance section wherein one obtains one's LOA stuff. So whilst I have no intention of sidetracking into creating another spur to the burgeoning metal mountain, one IS moved to ask what flipping rules you'd use to play an Aztec army? I imagine normal renaissancerules wouldn't cut it?
L'Art de la Guerre gives a good game with a nice "feel", I'm told, certainly within period (it's a DBx evolution with understandable and straightforward mechanisms, with each unit having 2-4 hits, from 10-12 units on a small game game up to three dozen on the biggest size).
The Meso-American lists are apparently competitive out of period too if you know what you're doing and can do it well, but a dud otherwise :)
Whilst I love AdlG as a game, it suffers the same as most "pointy stick, tin pants" sets and covers 3000 years and the entire globe in one set. Works as a game superbly and does give right feeling ish results, but it's not very simulationist or period specific - I suspect many would want more tightly focused rules with more "period chrome"...
Every dark ages gamer these days goes in for cattle or other livestock raids. I really can't think that it will be so difficult to play Mexicans as if a medieval or pike-and-shot army with extra provision for taking prisoners.
Something like Irregular wars would work well

I must say I'd fancy an 'Intra-Aztec' campaign more than a Conquistador vs Aztec one (147 mounted Spanish versus an Aztec army, massive loss to latter, not metioning teh huge no of Aztec enemies allied to the Spanish of course). Ancient rules might seem to cut that one. Yes, I believe mush Meso-American pre-Columbian warfare was to acquire prisoners to sacrifice so you'd need to build that in somehow... Unless Fierce Kitty knows better. (Incidentally, a campaign worthy of the Ancient Republican Romans themselves to get this range. Well done! You got Carthage destroyed in the end)
No, what am I saying... No, no, no, I have already way too many projects on the go

AdlG is intended for a "proper" set piece battle as opposed to Saga style "warband" or the Dux type in between-ish.
Prisoners and similar - depends on what level of chrome/abstraction/detail/flavour you want. You could write it off as being within the normal & morale/cohesion mechanisms, or you might want to actually model it directly but at a high level (eg extra Victory Point per unit broken in close combat or whatever) or in a detailed manner (eg a count of how many prisoners each unit/figure has subdued and whether that impacts your own combat potential etc).
You don't want to make it unplayable but some "period flavour" would help differentiate it from "normal" "tin pants & pointy sticks" s)
Rules for Aztec warfare? As I have previously highlighted, there is also the following variant of Lion Rampant ....

.... honestly, some of you need to get your names down now to ensure future admittance to your local Old Folks Home .... =)
p.s. ... don't know what "Quetzalcoatl" means ..... something to do with chewing coats? :-\

I think (?) it was in an early Dr Who episode involving THE Dr Who - William Hartnell - that I learnt that he is a feathered serpent! Quetzalcoatl that is, not William Hartnell -obviously!
A person with a lisp referring to the number of pretzels they allow themselves to eat? Their "pretzel quota"?

Definitely.
Irregular Wars is a great rule set. And is specifically for this period and for conflicts between European Explorers and Natives.
The rules contain Aztec lists and several others for neighbours (and not so near neighbours).

I fancy you might have seen the Children's ITV series from late 70s (?) called 'The Feathered Snake'. Patrick Troughton, ( a different former Dr Who), played the baddie, Nasca, a priest?

There was definitely a William Hartnell episode based on the Aztecs

The Coautl's sacrificed themselves to lock the fiends back down in Khyber, didn't they?
Anyway, Quetzalcoatl Rampant - took me a wander through the blog to find the rules page, but that looks cool. Copy of Lion/Dragon Rampant and a pack of Aztecs might be incoming if I remember/have any money left at WMMS :D All I need them is time and opportunity to paint them then get a game in...

I fancy I didn't, I graduated from University in 1977! ;D ;D
The Spanish domination of half the Americas wasn't the work of just a couple of hundred onion-eaters, some disgruntled locals, and a dog named Eric. There were more prolonged campaigns; rather like the ever-popular Zulu or Madhist wars, only with the technology gap a bit narrower.

That's no guarantee... I am currently paying for my eldest daughter's education at Uni where sometimes she has to do as many as 16 hours a week... I am sure life was different in '77, I think that is the year it was transmitted, and it apparently has since been released on DvD.
Take care.
