Title: Achaeans under the brush
Post by: FierceKitty on 01 March 2018, 11:59:02 AM
Not much to be added at this stage, but they're on the workbench, and I think they're going to look good. Pikes and chariots are such a strange mixture!

But once a little while. Setting up the figures for a group picture now....

Agamemnon, King of Men. The Clytemnestra figure making sure nobody else kills her husband is half Pendraken (below the waist, ACW Dixie belle).

From the other side. Admirers of Greek drama will note the red carpet with approval. Why should Homer dominate this narrative?

The great Achilles, with Patrocles driving, and one of the chariot regiments. If Achilles is randomised as the sub-general, the chariots are all impetuous, with the impact advantages and control disadvantages this brings. Note the hero's disdain for armour.
I wanted to give him a really fancy shield, but had to admit defeat; I don't paint that well, and what on earth would it look like in 10mm? We don't have all that many examples of suitable contemporary art, and Homer is not a reliable source. Anyway, if I did get it right, I'd be in danger of divine retribution from Hephaistos. The Olympians don't care for humans to do things too well.

Some pikemen. Two thirds Newlines, one third Magister Militum.

The black shields are the dreaded Myrmiddons. Also note rather better armoured Menelaus commanding 4th unit.

A heavy frontal assault is clearly the indicated tactic for these chaps. That's the Greater Ajax with the metal-faced shield.

Old Nestor's Pylians. Conversions from surplus TB caetrati. And finally Odysseus' chariots. He may also be randomised as the 2nd in command, in which case the wheelie-bins are all rated as disciplined, with less impact but much better regard for orders, and superior staying power.

Sleepy. I shall now go and measure my length on the bed, and my armour will ring about me.

Your armour knows your phone number ?...Or is it calling someone else, to talk about you, behind your back ?
What will they think of next ? 8-} ;)

Looks really good, Alexander !! :)

Cheers - Phil

Thus says The Great King to Alaksandu his brother, the armies of Ahhiyawa stand ready, arrayed for battle, splendid in bronze and fine leather, but where are the armies of Piyamaradu of Wilusa? :)

Looking very good FK.

Not convinced the Achilles went into battle skyclad but it might explain why Patroclus bought the farm while wearing Achilles armour :D

Are you calling two hundred classical sculptors liars?   ;)

I'm afraid they'll have to be content with bashing the Egyptians and the Thracians for a while. But Hatti-land and its ladyboys may get a look in some day.

Where does above the waist come from?

Really clever stuff, Kitty. Your Agamemnon vignette has all the elements of a great story telling right down to Clytemnestra's lower parts coming from Alabama (or equivalent). She appears also to be still in morning for her lost daughter?

They're going onto a strong right-wing advance with slower centre and very weak and uncommited left against the Gyppies. No contact yet.

Good start. Agamemnon has charged and broken the Royal squadron of Egyptian chariotry, Mighty in Attack; they and the Pharoah are in full flight.

Ah, yes. Victory. Even the wounded general recovered. I had a bit of ridiculous luck when a large unit of archers rolled down three times in a row, and it helped that a disordered pike unit fought of its attackers too. But I did the right things, and they worked. Purrrrrrrrr.
