Title: Byzantines
Post by: fsn on 24 February 2018, 01:39:35 PM
Good afternoon gentlemen.

I've been reading the Alexiad of Anna Comnena again, and so, of course, I now want Byzantines of the Dyrrachium period (1081).  I've been looking at the Late Roman and Sassanids; the Dark Age range and possibly the Silhidars from the C16 Ottoman Turks.

Any suggestions?

Some of the competition do have Byzantine ranges; two companies at least.

They look very good on the field; my favourite medieval army.

Also one of my top two or three armies, built up a huge collection for Warmaster Ancients and I'm slowly rebasing a chunk of them for SAGA.

Unfortunately I had to stray from Pendraken......

I'll go and get the sack cloth and ashes.

(Got an error message on my previous attempt to reply - apologies if this is a duplicate.)

Does anyone else ever wonder whether, had the Western Empire not collapsed in 476AD, and instead survived a significant period longer, either in its full state, or as a 'rump' Southern European state, it would have resembled the Byzantine in its strictures and military?

Imagine if the Romans in the late 460s or 470s had managed to recover the provinces of Africa between them, (not so far fetched; it was done by Justinian and Belisarius 60/70 years later)? What might the Western Roman Empire have looked like?

Counterfactual history, I know, but I have never derailed a post before and I am anxious to do so.

:D
