It was a tough decision:

Plastic would break easy
Metal, I'd get stabbed
Went for the Hollywood bendy spears thoughtfully provided with the figures ;)

Have you tried plastic brush bristles? Straight but flelxible and if you flatten one end you can cut the spearhead diamond shape. My mate uses them for his phalangites and ECW pikemen and says they work a treat.

I got some a while back but couldn't get them fine enough for 1/72, especially when the hands have to be drilled.  I'll have another look, thanks for the suggestion.
