Title: Border Horse targe or shield
Post by: Heedless Horseman on 19 January 2018, 02:46:47 AM
Hi. Afraid this is about 28mm, not 10mm but would welcome info. On seeing the new Perry plastic late medieval/WOR Light Cavalry, thought...'Wow...Must Have!'...and have ordered a box. Intention was to do up as pre-firearm border horse. (Yes, I know...the set horses are too 'fine'...I have ridden beasties who would have done very well...(sure footed, steady but biddable, with great heart...and streak of intelligence/wickedness that could have been useful...just...SMALLER and HAIRY! Lol). The riders look ok with long boots and a variety of weapons and headgear.
However, on thinking, have realised that the figures do not seem to have any shields/Targes/Bucklers...and these must have been kit. Could anyone recommend a source for these...or approximations...in 28mm? Would rather not spend lots...(seems a shame considering the nice sculpts) but, seeing as horses not very historical and it was an impulse buy rather than a serious project, could TRY to fabricate some...just not sure how to make decent items. I have found some possibilities but from different periods or scales, and wondered if anything might be 'just right'?
Thoughts appreciated. K

I've been looking at 28mm Perrys to finish off a long standing 1470's Burgundian Wars project this year and they have a number of separate shields that might be suitable for what you have in mind?

What about these Italian circular infantry shields from the Perry's metal Medieval European Armies range?

Small enough to be bucklers (which are pretty small), maybe add a central boss from a sanded down hole punched plastic disc?

If you wanted something a bit different they also do separate plain oval shields as well, but again Italian not border horse:

You get 24 shields for 7 pounds, so a bit more expensive than Orcs suggestion.

Redoubt Enterprises? Cost looks reasonable but sadly no photographs.

Also, anything salvageable from Foundry's Weapons & Shields section?

Thanks very much chaps. Have sent off an order to Redoubt for Targets...assuming they are Targes! Minimum order, so also went for other weaponry for other unstarted Perry plastics...and a trial horse!  ;D  Will see...some others were possible.  :)
Another source might have been

1/72 prob a bit small for purposel, though weapons bought from him in past were on the chunky side of 20mm...but very useful for figs in scale. (When just getting re-interested in wargame stuff, I 'converted' loads of plastic  Medieval pike into polearms...then found that I liked metals in 10/12mm better for WOR so never went further. LOL!  ;D  )
