All,
Well, fresh off my wargaming haul from Christmas (which you haven't even seen yet!), I just got my birthday haul in the mail! Two separate orders: one from Novus Design Studios, which cleverly ran a 40% off sale after Christmas that I just couldn't pass up, and the other from Pendraken in the UK, purveyor of fine 10mm miniatures. This is the order that is my big project for 2018 that I've mentioned cryptically to a few of you (and inadvertently told one of you!). I'll show ya a couple photos, and it's up to you to put the clues together and take your guesses as to what that project is (a hint: the Novus Design order has nothing to do with the Pendraken order, so don't get wrapped up around that).
The Novus Design, all in 15mm for my skirmish gaming, already unboxed, and a medium-sized, heavy-ass box. If you want to see what's in the box, please check the blog at:

So, what is it? What's my big project? The boy and I will be playing reinforced company-sized fights on a 6' x 4' table using a modified version of the Lardies' "I Ain't Been Shot Mum" rules.
Coming up as soon as I can get them painted and based ;) I do have some modern skirmish batreps from Cuba Libre to share with you in the interim, post them as soon as I can.
V/R,
Jack
Sounds like a really interesting project :)
Paul,
Definitely minis ;)
No guess to put forth?
V/R,
Jack
Can't guess what it is, but your post did bring to mind the excitement I always feel when I get in a Pendraken order. For me things are usually planned for purposes other than what they were originally made for so I am always anxious to see if my thinking and plans are going to work! I look forward to seeing what your project is!!!

I read your blog so have quite a few hints ;)
I am wondering what infantry you are using :-\
The American tanks are confusing me slightly :-/
A good choice of rules!
Not looked too closely at Jack's blog but I'm guessing its cold war goes hot on the German Border or in Berlin in the early/mid 1980's (If its T-55's probably East German NVA rather than troops from Group of Soviet Forces Germany who would be in T62's or T64's)?
Minifigs do a range of 10mm modern infantry covering various NATO and Warsaw Pact nations Paul - I have looked at this period myself but Jack is living the dream ;)
Be very interested to see how you adapt IABSM rules to modern period Jack. Are you using some of the Lardies amendments that they did to cover the Falklands in one of their Christmas Specials?
Love the ginger tabby cat checking out things in the picture - we had a very friendly one who lived to 19 years old but unfortunately he passed on last year.
uauuuu :) :)
Yom Kippur?
I think you might find the cat a worthy opponent. They seem straightforward enough - but they're sneaky.
Ahh, yes, thank you everyone, even for the 'uauuuu' ;)
I figured there would be plenty of guesses for Arab-Israeli/Yom Kippur as that would seem to be most reasonable, what with the M-60s vs T-62s and BTR-50s, but I don't think M-113s are a great fit.
Cold War Gone Hot is much closer, but still not what you think: I'm going earlier, probably mid-60s, and this ain't happening in Europe... The damn Soviets have managed to pull off a full-on invasion of the United States, Red Dawn style!!!
So we'll not be fighting in the Fulda Gap or to cross the Rhine, we're fighting to save Kentucky (I know, who would want to save Kentucky?) or to cross the Mississippi!!! The Soviets will be coming down through Canada in Washington and New York, up through Mexico in Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona, and have nuked California and DC! I'll be running a mechanized fire brigade dashing from enemy breakthrough to enemy breakthrough while the boy commands the (evil) Red onslaught.
Pierre - I've greatly simplified the combat mechanics of IABSM, so no real issues with bringing them forward to modern times. Here's what I did:
http://blackhawkhet.blogspot.com/2017/12/i-aint-been-shot-mum-rules-tweaks.html?m=1
And what do you mean you haven't looked very closely at my blog(s)!!!??? ;)
Paul - Regarding infantry, it was tough. Minifigs make modern US and Soviets, but the US weapons and helmets are wrong. I thought about using Pendraken Vietnam-era US and NVA, but I decided I'd rather the US had M-14s than M-16s. I resolved to use Falklands Argentinians as US and NVA for Soviets, but the NVA are significantly larger than the Falklands range guys, so I simply went with Argentinians for both. I'm also using some French recoiless rifles from the Indochina range, and some 120mm mortars and command from the WWII Soviet range.
So everything is Pendraken except for two Soviet Su-7s and two American F-100s.
And to hell with that cat, he destroyed a bunch of my trees!!!
V/R,
Jack
Very interesting Jack....l will follow this closely on your blog ;)
Thanks for the info about your changes to IABSM rules.
WOLVERINES!!!!
Coool plan.
I too thought Yom Kippur (plenty of m113's isreali version zelda)
Pierre - No problem, and WOLVERINES!!!!
Matt - Absolutely, but as you mentioned, the dressed up Zeldas, not the bare M-113s. Which surely can be converted, if I had the time and talent ;)
I got all the American vehicles slapped together this evening, will post on the blog shortly. Hope to do the Soviets tomorrow night.
EDIT: Here's a pic, more on the blog:

No, I'm pretty sure you've got Yom Kippur there.
I'll admit there is a bit of resemblance; if only I'd have put some recoiless rifles on the jeeps ;)

Also I'm sure us Brits would have sent a few squadrons of Centurions to help beat back the Commies ;)
Sorry, Matt, I think in this story you Brits have been nuked. I can't see any other way; as you mentioned, you guys wouldn't just be sitting it out. =)

The British Army had a OPFOR Training Facility at Suffiield in Canada in the 70's and 80s - they had a couple of squadrons of British kit based there?
Chieftains rather than Centurions IIRC......
.but who can complain about that? ;)Have to obtain them from another source in 10mm though.

If the paranoid fantasies of MI5, Old Etonians and Special Branch had actually been true Britain might well be in the throes of a change over to a glorious United Soviet Republic ;)
Perhaps the CIA's "strategy of tension" got a bit carried away and instead of a paper tiger to point to as a threat, they actually got a full blown insurrection! Same might go for the rest of Euro-NATO, especially Italy, or perhaps Gaullist France has nobbled the NATO response trusting to her nukes to keep back the Soviets and create a new Frankish Empire in Europe?
All,
Tonight I got all the infantry from my Pendraken Cold War project cleaned up and prepped for priming, here are some pics, but they're not totally ready. I'll explain below... In any case, I really need some warm weather so I can get everything spray primed. I apologize, it's tough to see detail in the photos since these are bare metal, but I wanted to share.

Don't worry, TP, I'll have the Brits get nuked rather than turn Commie ;)
Now I just need some warm weather...
V/R,
Jack
S'all right, either way works. Doesn't even need to be full Communist, just say the US went a bit heavy handed over the Marshall Plan/Lend-Lease repayments, replacing colonial possessions and interfering in elections, and Europe's decided to attempt to return to the good olds days :D
It's it's red or dead I'll back mutha Russia!
Looking good Jack
Coming on nicely
Take care
Andy
All,
Well, Thursday I prepped the infantry for my Wolverines project, but I didn't base them because I was fresh outta bases. I didn't get anything done Friday, except to place an order for more bases from Litko, but Saturday morning I was rooting around in all my hobby stuff, and what did I find? That's right, a bunch of bases. So this morning I based up all the infantry; and this interesting (to me, at least), as I've never done 10mm troops this way.
The whole mess, Soviets on the left, Yanks on the right. If you recall, each side has an infantry company consisting of CO, three platoon commanders, three rifle platoons of three squads (one stand equals one squad), and a weapons platoon consisting of three 82 or 81mm mortars (Sov/US), three recoiless rifles, and three heavy machine guns (Dshks/M-2s, though they kinda all look like M-2s, if you are catching the drift of me...). In game terms, we will break up the Wpns Plt and parcel it out to each of the three rifle platoons, so each rifle platoon will have a PC, three rifle squads, a mortar, an HMG, and a recoiless rifle, with each armored personnel carrier carrying two stands. Yeah, I shoulda sprung for four APCs per platoon, but I'm a cheapskate...
TP - Nah, BAOR is still fighting tooth and nail on the continent, but the home islands are getting nuked. I will not let you compromise your integrity!
Matt - I'll pretend I didn't see that (see above)!!! ;)
Andy - Thanks!

Looking forward to seeing some paint on these!
Compromise away, feel free - If it stops the British Isles getting nuked it's not a bad deal :D
Mind, given NATO plans called for nuking Eastern Europe and western Russia on the outbreak of hostilities its probably a revenge spasm anyway.
Looking good (Radiation, what radiation?)
Futures so bright, I gotta wear shades!
All,
First, let me say that I'm utterly despondent after seeing the @#$%ing Patriots beat the Jaguars, and knowing they're going to another Super Bowl and are likely to win it. In any case... I was able to take advantage of the great weather this weekend and my Cold War Soviet invasion of the United States (I'm calling it my "Wolverines" project) is moving full speed ahead. Last week I received the toys, got them cleaned, assembled, prepped, and primed. Here's a quick few photos to document the progress.
Top left is US vehicles, center is Soviet vehicles, bottom center is US infantry, and bottom right is Soviet infantry. Gotta love Walmart Krylon spray cans. And forgive me, all that sunlight has washed out the colors a bit! In any case, I've made the executive decision to, as I quite often do, throw together some cool paintjobs that aren't historically accurate. To see more pics, please check the blog at:
http://blackhawkhet.blogspot.com/2018/01/and-they-are-primed-and-ready.html
TP - I can't have the Western powers nuking the Soviets, or there wouldn't be an invasion and ongoing war in the US to wargame. So the Soviets will have to pull it off via some sort of subterfuge; smuggled nukes into various targets in the Western powers and detonated them, plus maybe some nukes off subs or something else creative that allowed the Soviets to pound the Western powers and innoculate them against nucleur retaliation. Relax and get your shades! ;)
V/R,
Jack
Looking good, Jack.
Cheers - Phil

You've got to diverge very strongly from reality somewhere to get Soviet tanks in America, might as well go big or go home :D
Maybe they managed to set up missiles in Cuba, whilst the US kept Britain/France from developing their own deterrent? Or maybe the French have it, and have actively gone "Full de Gaulle" and said "non" to NATO, hoping to secure a new French Empire whilst the US and USSR batter each other and anyone else into submission. It's all gone a bit GDW and 2300AD/Twilight:2000 in my mind now :D
Good job on the tanks and figures, though. Hurrah for cheap spray paint decent weather!
Set it in Alaska.
All,
Well, still depressed about the @#$%ing Patriots, but the world keeps on turning, and I continue moving ahead with my Wolverines project. Now I'm on to working on camo for the vehicles, experimenting with Blue-Tack as a mask. I went to Wal-mart and bought their version of Blue Tack (couldn't find actual Blue Tack anywhere, but reading on the internet told me the various brands are fairly interchangeable), brought it home, and got to work masking a couple of test tanks, one M-60A1 and one T-62. I primed them yesterday and let them sit over night before messing with the Blue Tack.
Here are my two test subjects, the T-62 at left and the M-60 at right. To see how it turned out, please check the blog at:

Phil - You're alive!!! Cheers!
Matt - Ta hell with Brady; he definitely has some skill, but for my money, it's the evil genius Belichik. Coaching is how a mediocre offensive line only gives up three sacks to Sacksonville (and pretty much the only times Brady was even pressured, much less touched), how you end up with Amendola and Cooks being matched up on linebackers, how you can get eight guys in the box and still make the Jax playcallers think running the ball is the right choice...
TP and FSN - You guys are sure pretty worked up about my alt-UK getting alt-nuked by alt-USSR in alt-1960s ;)
V/R,
Jack

Yep the KM ground effect "aircraft with a top speed of 400MPH and a 300 ton Payload (6 MBTS) could cross the bering straight in 7.5 mins. For the initial assault then the heavy lift hovercraft the ZUBR to reinforce the bridgehead
The Zubr-class landing craft has a cargo area of 400 square metres (4,300 sq ft) and a fuel capacity of 56 tons.[2] It can carry three main battle tanks (up to 150 tonnes), or ten armoured vehicles with 140 troops (up to 131 tonnes), or 8 armoured personnel carriers of total mass up to 115 tonnes, or 8 amphibious tanks or up to 500 troops (with 360 troops in the cargo compartment).
I used an Airbrish for my ww2 Polish vehicles. To get small enough patches and lacking fine airbrush skills I used the following method.
Laminate an A4 sheet of white paper.
Cut the paper into 3 inch strips across the width
Using a scalpel cut some very varied very small shapes in the end of the strip approx. 2 inches from the end. making a template
Hold the template strip very close to the vehicle and spray through the hole.
You can vary the size of the sprayed area by moving the template nearer or further from the tank
because its not tight against the vehicle you get some overspray blending on the edges of the shape.
I used this to do three colour camo on my Polish vehicles. it came out fine for 10mm and was relatively quick to do after a bit of practice on the first couple of vehicles. You need to make the holes you cut small enough so that if you put the template right on the vehicle they are smaller than the area you want covered.
Looking very nice, Jack.
I'm surprised that the tiny bits of 'blu tak' wouldn't come off by using more b/t.
Years ago I had a 'paint on' masking fluid (Revell ??), which worked well.....But would be a b*gger to get off something small...You had to 'catch' an edge with a pair of fine tweezers and then pull.
Cheers - Phil

Not really. I was just thinking of a practical way of getting Soviet tanks into the USA.
Orcs got the idea. Is the KM the Ekranoplan thing from James Bond book
Devil May Care? Like a plane with short wings that doesn't fly but goes bloomin' fast?
That would be a nice addition to an OOB.
The blue taj tanks I thought were a branch out into fantasy!!
All looking good Jack

I love the Caspian Sea Monster and all the Ekranoplans, WiGs rock :)
It's not so much worked up as finding something that doesn't seem totally jarring. Mindf, I remember the "Red Dawn" RPG's of the eighties, which were... interesting.
Edit:
Was just reading thru your attempts at masking. Ouch. That's a lot of faff. I did some 15mm sci-fi tanks and 28mm walkers with a sort of jagged scheme, tried blue tac, masking tape, chipping medium. None of it was much cop, and blue tac was a sod as I got bits stuck as well. Took bloody ages to get all the bits out! Will a dark wash in green bring the Soviets more to a "temperate colour"? Or perhaps they're up from Mexico and operating in the scrub?!
Lots of tanks Jack!
I tend to have hand painted camo on tanks - but I don't think I've ever done this many in one go!
All,
Well, fresh off my Blue-Tack experiment, I've decided to go monochrome for the vehicles in my Wolverines project, Soviets going medium green and Americans olive drab. I was able to pop out to the garage after work and get them spray coated, here are some pics.

Guys - Thanks everyone for all the comments, recommendations, and general empathy regarding my Blue Tack experience. I think I will try it again sometime in the future, with larger scale vehicles, and much fewer vehicles than I working with here.
Regarding 'worked up,' just joking guys, and as far as thinking of a plausible way of getting Soviet tanks into the US, I don't think there is a way, but I don't really care, I'm gaming it anyway! ;)
The WiGs are cool, but I couldn't see using them on the tabletop, those things are extremely vulnerable (just like US Navy LCACs), they have no place being anywhere near some shooting.
V/R,
Jack
I don't they expected the Ekranoplan's to be "assault vehicles" (even in the way the hovercraft or conventional landing craft are); they're for rapid transport or naval fast strike - a really fast cruise missile attack craft...

No blog update this evening, but I'm making progress on the infantry. US troops are painted, Soviets almost, then have to wash and flock both.
V/R,
Jack
All,
Well, it's been quiet here on the blog the past couple days, but I've been slaving away on my Wolverines project. Lots of painting, washing, and flocking over the past three days has seen my complete all the infantry bases (as well as the Soviet heavy mortar platoon and AA gun, which are not self-propelled). I'm also making steady progress on the vehicles, though I noticed I may not have enough of my dark tone wash to do all the vehicles once the painting is completed, so I put in a quick order to The Warstore (went in for a box of the new Battlefront Team Yankee LAV-25s!). Anyway, here's where we're at.
The whole mess: assorted hobby implements at top left and top center, a box of my boys' 54mm plastic army-men at top right, then the project. All the vehicles are at left (olive drab is US, medium green is Soviet), Soviet infantry at right, and US infantry at bottom right.

All,
I've been pushing as hard as I can on this, and my Cold War "Wolverines" project is complete. Well, almost. The 10mm Pendraken lead portion of this project, which comprises about 97.5% of the total, is now complete, with but a couple more items begging for attention. Yesterday I showed you I had completed the infantry, and I worked quite a bit last night and today to get the vehicles knocked out. I am happy to report, they are ready for the table! Here are a few pics; these are just teaser pics, documenting my project status. Soon I will post a bunch more pics, nice close-ups, like I normally do, just need to carve out a little time, and a little sun wouldn't hurt, too. I should be able to totally complete this project in time to start the war next weekend, so stay tuned!

All,
No games this weekend, but I've made some progress on a couple projects, though neither are ready for the table. In any case, I'm waiting for the Super Bowl to start and figured I'd post an update.

Nothing yet, Phil, hopefully this weekend!
I have been working on the Soviet aircraft, and I'm having a helluva time...
V/R,
Jack
Is the paint not working now the bluetac is?!
Yeah, something like that. Like I said, the Blue Tack worked, but the spray painted lines didn't look so great as I was running out of spray paint, and so I figured I'd brush on some paint to clean it up, but the yellow is having a really hard time covering, and I'm getting some really bad textures (ridges and brushstrokes)...
V/R,
Jack
Ouch... shame the running out spray didn't just look a bit "feathery" and blend in! Yellow is an utter arse a lot of the time, just doesn't cover/pop well and then like you say you get terrible brush marks etc.
Good luck...
Yep yellow is a ballache in any form and the paint seems to dry out 2x faster than any other colour.
Yeah, running out of spray didn't feather, it polka dotted ;)
Which I couldn't see until I removed the Blue Tack...
It's okay, I don't need beautiful, just functional without being hideous...
V/R,
Jack
