Title: WMMS, Alumwell - Sun 18th Mar
Post by: Leon on 05 January 2018, 02:36:17 AM
The WMMS show is always a great day out, combining wargames with some excellent modelling displays as well.  We'll need pre-orders sending through by Saturday 10th March please.

For more info on the show, head over to the Alumwell club website: http://www.alumwellwargames.co.uk/

We'll be there as Circle, running a participation game of... something... not sure what yet, might be WW2 coastal, might be 10mm Twilight of the Sun King, might be Black Ops or Song of Blades.

Yep, that lot could never make their collective minds up!  :) :)

I've short cut that by just sorting it, usually :D

Although this year for Wargamer it was different - John said he wanted to play Black Ops so we did :D

Quite refreshing!

WMMS show 2018 is on Sunday 18th March, surely?

Or is this just a test? Did I win?!

I'm pencilled-in to be working on the Colonel Bill's stand, if there's Forum members at the show.

I'll come across at some point and say hello, toxicpixie. Can't miss me. Ginger-haired and wearing a Col. Bill's polo shirt.

They'd be brave putting it on on Mothering Sunday!

They've moved it back a weekend this year due to the venue being booked up, so it is indeed the 18th!  I'd already booked our hotel for the 11th as well, so if anyone wants a night in Wolverhampton on Saturday 10th, give me a shout!

Wyre Forest club will be there doing a game set in Ireland in 1690 with the Twilight of the Sun King rules, unfortunately not 10mm :(

Yeah, there doesn't seem to be much there!  We looked at the local tourist attractions to see if we could take the kids down for a day out, but we didn't find anything suitable.

Black Country Museum is about half an hour away, or there's a bunch of National Trust stiff like Wightwick Manor, or the RAF Museum at Cosford.

Dunno what Wolves night life is like anymore, it all ended with the death of the Dorch IMO ;)

I'm off to see my Mum on Friday lunch time so I can report if the city centre is a ghost town or Mad Max if needed...

We're there on the 18th, Black Ops, Circle Wargames. Hopefully with enough minions I can do more than hare round the hall once :D

Cosford is well worth a visit (they even have a Centurion  :-$)

Used to go out a bit in Wolvo as a young man and saw a lot of gigs at the Wulfrun, great days  8->

Not sure I'd hazard a night out there now!

Oi !  Thats my home town you're knocking you cheeky so and so    ;)

I have to admit though, I don't tend to visit the town centre when
there's a full moon...

I haven't been out in Wolves for a night for, errr, probably a decade plus. Actually, probably close to fifteen years...

It's mostly my home or at least formative town, but it's heyday was gone well before then.

Except for WMMS, that's awesome ;)

And I'll make allowances for my family, I guess  :P

I think that's the same in a lot of places now, we've not been for a night out in Middlesbrough in about 12 years I think.  We go for a couple of drinks after the staff Christmas party each year, but that tends to be one or two of the quieter pubs away from the main boozing areas.

My brother, who resides in Pendeford (from where the Boulton-Paul Defiant hails) opines that "Wolverhampton has all the drawbacks of a city ... with none of the advantages."

Despite the proximity of kin, I may essay the WMMS this year.

Yes, that's the point :D

Normally for reasons known only unto Ghu they hold WMMS on mothering sunday...

This year the hall was booked already so it's on the 18th :D

FSN, if you're passing say hello! Stop and roll a few dice at Black Ops :D

Right, venue says they're business as usual, we're on the way, North b'ham Main roads are fine as gritted and traffic has mangled them to slush at worst. Pendrakenonauts, lets do this!

Motorway and town roads fine, car park mildly awkward, all good to go!

Car parking always an issue at that venue. Hope you all had a good show.

I do think we did :) Best participation game for us, and Leon didn't sound too downbeat by the end so I hope sales were ok. Footfall was about half normal apparently but seems to have been enough punters, I think...

Sadly we couldn't make it due to sunny Stroud becoming snowy Stroud

@nathan - congrats on game

Cheers chaps! We're well chuffed :)

I'd hope it wasn't too bad for the traders, there looked like money was changing hands well enough. Except the Bring and buy - small footprint meant you could actually get to it and have a look but no joy selling owt :/

On which note anyone want some 20mm WW2 Germans?! Or 15mm New Kingdom Egyptians...

Damnit, the box is upstairs :D

There's I think four chariots, and 145 foot in various types - bow, spear & shield, axemen and Sherden auxilia with some Nubian bow men. On Impetus basing atm (80mm wide).

I'll do a break down, they're all painted (over some time so the quality on say the Sherden is much better than the bows I did twenty year ago!) and I'll get a photo or three if you want & PM you.

Piccies from today here - https://www.facebook.com/jtppainting/posts/2010043652578762 (https://www.facebook.com/jtppainting/posts/2010043652578762) - I haven't snapped people playing as I'm never sure if they'll want to be plastered over the web but we had sterotypical middle aged gamers, twenty ish students and even a couple of young ones; the lass was very determined to beat her slightly older brother and played a blinding game of fire and manouver to now his troops down ;)

We got back home safely, the roads were completely fine and clear of snow.  The show itself was OK as well, with half the expected visitors our takings were around 3/4's of last year so we've done pretty well considering.  A big thanks to everyone who came along today, I know the weather was extremely bad in some parts of the UK and we appreciate the efforts made by people got through it, to support the event and spend their pennies!

The nice looking, professional bit is mostly my club mates contribution - the Blue Peter-esq airfield & control tower side is mine :D

On viewing the pics, I though, "Top stuff!" and, deservedly so, I see the last photo is of a trophy for best(?) in show (sorry, unable to make it out exactly). Well done!  =D>

Cheers - it's "Best Participation Game".

Whilst the big games are very impressive, we like to run something that people can join in with for half an hour without too much faff and confusion. Think it gets people interested, and thinking "I/we could do that...", so we keep it fairly small (Black Ops plays with half a dozen figures a side very nicely) and "doable" in price and scenery (Larna's half of the table is something to aspire to, mine is something you can bodge up with some sticky back plastic, the contents of the recycling bin, and a competent adult to wield scissors and glue :D).

We usually get a nice mix across the day of the kids (from Primary age to big school), and adults from the student/twenties up to the older "classic wargamer" profile ;)

As I've now got more clubmates interested it's a lot easier and we can all have a mooch round the show as well!
