So chaps, almost at the end of the year again, so i thought, let's start this one up! The 2016 post had quite a bit of traffic, and i enjoyed reading it all so maybe we can do this again! I'm a few day earlier this time, but wanted to start it now, so people can maybe fill in the questions in their holiday leave (if any)! I'll start first!
1: best new rules/game you played?
2: worst new rules/game you played?
3: best purchase you did this year?
4: worst purchase you did this year?
5: most expensive purchase this year? And did you regret it?

8: how many models did you paint (roughly)?
9:wich unused models/games did you sell/trade?

I'll fill in the questions myself in the first post!
1: best new rules/game you played?
Bolt action second edition
2: worst new rules/game you played?
an adaptation of the pirates of the spanish main game. Found it and thought it would give the game more depth, but it just overdid it and made the game very very slow!Apart from that, every new game or ruleset i played wwere good!
3: best purchase you did this year?
single model i like the most:Napoleon by the perry brothers!
And for best purchase as a whole: The big lot of LOTR miniatures i got on ebay in january, managed to get a lot of my forces for that game completed!
4: worst purchase you did this year?
Tomb of annihilation (the new d&d boardgame) Not a bad game, and don't regret it , but the game is now produced by wizzkids, and they changed the scale without telling anyone!
ravenloft on the left, tomb of annihilation onthe right

A very good year painting wise, but severely lacking gaming wise!Especially a lot less solo gaming. Can't have both apparently, but i still want more!!!

10: would you review your year as a good year of wargaming, or did you want more?
Excellent year for number of whole day games played.
Very poor for shows as I only made it to one
Reasonable year for painting considering major work on house got in the way.
1: best new rules/game you played?
Tried 'To the last Gaiter Button' once. Not bad, I could well give them another outing next year when I have all the chaps painted.

Most of the formations for my 6mm Early War armies and no I didn't reget it. We came back from northern France in March ad the idea has been simmering ever since. As it lasted for more than 6 months I decided to give it a go.

9:which unused models/games did you sell/trade?
What is this sell/trade of which you speak :-/
10: would you review your year as a good year of wargaming, or did you want more?
Yes and yes
We got a lot of good games in during our regular Saturday evening sessions :) :) :)
I spent a lot of time this year testing out various rules for new periods including Ancient naval, English Civil War and Sudan in the 1880s
We found suitable rules for the last two but decided in the end that they didn't offer enough to be added to existing 9-10 regular periods/rules
I decided instead to expand my existing AWI forces and have another look at ECW once FK&P come out
1: best new rules/game you played?
Tribal with the Primeval supplement
2: worst new rules/game you played?

3: best purchase you did this year?

3mm Oddzial Osmy Normandy '44 British and German forces for BKC - nope!
6: game you played the most this year?
BKC2
7: game you wish you had played more this year?
All the rest :) Especially Tribal - must paint more figures!!
8: how many models did you paint (roughly)?
The Carthaginian galley fleet is the only thing finished. Piles of part painted figures for multiple projects however.
Down to a mix of feeling painting to be more of a chore than ever, "butterfly" approach to projects and illness affecting self and close family.
9:wich unused models/games did you sell/trade?
Sell? Trade? Are you mad??? ;)
10: would you review your year as a good year of wargaming, or did you want more?
Lots of board and computer gaming but not nearly enough figure gaming either as a group or solo.

V&B wing scale AWI - a period and set of rules that I really enjoy, and sometimes even manage to be on the winning side ;)

9:which unused models/games did you sell/trade?
What sort of question is that? :o
10: would you review your year as a good year of wargaming, or did you want more?
Yes achieved a few milestones but plenty left to do still. More is always good but in my case reality is never far away with my daughters condition taking up a lot of time this year, but I'll always put family before gaming.
1: best new rules/game you played?
The Men Who Would Be Kings
2: worst new rules/game you played?
AVP the boardgame - hoped this would be a bit like Space Hulk plus, but a yawn to play.
3: best purchase you did this year?
Some more 3x3 and 3x4 gaming mats from Ceri Designs, excellent value for money and already had a lot of use for skirmish games.
4: worst purchase you did this year?
Frozen ponds from the "Battlefield in a Box" range. Looked OK to start, but they keep warping!
5: most expensive purchase this year? And did you regret it?
Nothing, I made no single purchase over about £50 this year!
6: game you played the most this year?
The Men Who Would Be Kings
7: game you wish you had played more this year?
The Pikeman's Lament
8: how many models did you paint (roughly)?
Not a lot, no more than a couple of hunderd in all scales
9:Which unused models/games did you sell/trade?
A bit of as clear out getting rid of various odds and ends
10: would you review your year as a good year of wargaming, or did you want more?
Excellent overall. Despite losing access to my new gaming space for a couple of months, whilst work was going on in the garden, I got a lot of gaming days in at home, plus averaged 2 club nights a month.
Not so good on shows, I only got to two and had trouble finding stuff to spend money on at both!
1: best new rules/game you played?
Played several air combat rule sets. Then wrote my own
2: worst new rules/game you played?
None
3: best purchase you did this year?
Pendraken Napoleonic

Binocular lenses. Can't see. A thing through them.

1:600 us bombing stream over Germany. 1944.
7: game you wish you had played more this year?

Good in parts. Always want more.
1: best new rules/game you played?
Fighting Sails
2: worst new rules/game you played?
N/A
3: best purchase you did this year?
Donnington Wars of the Roses figures, allowed me to "finish" a project
4: worst purchase you did this year?
None, happy with all
5: most expensive purchase this year? And did you regret it?

Good year, would like to have played a few more games
Cheers
Ian
1. Tin Soldiers in Action
2. None this year
3. Tin Soldiers in Action
4. Nothing I can think of
5. Steel Fist Miniatures Samurai buntai - beautiful figures and definitely not regretted.
6. BBB - still one of my top favourites and the best way to fight the big historical battles of the C19th
7. To the Strongest - lacking enough completed armies
8. About 300 - not nearly enough
9. None this year
10. Very mixed this year. It started well, particularly with the February trip to the BBB Bash in Oxford, followed in early March with the club trip to Abingdon. Unfortunately I was unable to get to my local show, Phalanx, this year, but made up for it with another club trip to Colours. The Year ended well with my purchases and then games of Ronin and Tin Soldiers in Action. Autumn however was a bit grim with Photobucket becoming arsey, then other attempts at photo posting became laborious, time-consuming and tended to fill my computer with bugs, so no more of those for the time being. Also my painting mojo has been fluctuating badly this year, so, for example the RJW, a number of projects have either slowed or become totally inert. I have also given up attending the club evening session and now play with a new group of daywalkers (these are the guys I go to the shows with), with a 10 am kick-off and a lunchtime pint afterwards. I have also set up my own wargames room and currently have three regular visitors (only one being a daywalker). Finally my son persuaded me to lose the old Nokia and get a very much better Motorola phone with a sim only contract costing a mere £5 a month more than my old one. The camera on it is better than my actual camera, so now I am satisfied with texting photos directly to friends, which takes about 3 seconds, as opposed to 45 minutes using a hosting site. So, in conclusion, the year has ended on a high wargaming note.
1: best new rules/game you played?
Looking at my list I think everything on there I played last year, so the newest one I like the most is Sharp Practice.
2: worst new rules/game you played?
Broken Legions, I really want to like this game, the concept is great the rules read ok, but they just always seem to come down to a slogfest of dice rolls.
3: best purchase you did this year?
A bunch of magnetic and steel sheet for basing.
4: worst purchase you did this year?
None
5: most expensive purchase this year? And did you regret it?
Was pretty skint this year for wargaming purchases so other than my magnetic/steel sheet my big expenditure was a £13 Birthday present of 28mm Napoleonic Women to add to Objectives for Sharp Practice.
6: game you played the most this year?
Frostgrave, (we cycle through campaigns, so this narrowly beats BKC2 which ended beginning of the year.)
7: game you wish you had played more this year?
Warmaster
8: how many models did you paint (roughly)?
Due to being skint I did a lot of finishing up of armies this year, so 181x 28mm, 107x 10mm, 84x 6mm. (6 and 10mm I count the bases, not the figures)
9:which unused models/games did you sell/trade?
None, and I've been saying I should sort out a couple of things I know I'll never use for Claymore for about 10 years now!
10: would you review your year as a good year of wargaming, or did you want more?
Good year, due to a good club, 41 games (17 systems) played according to my calendar.
1: best new rules/game you played? King of Tokyo, or Bolt Action 2, but not likely to play it again seriously.
2: worst new rules/game you played? Zombie survivor game that I'm trying desperately to forget!
3: best purchase you did this year? Anything Pendraken
4: worst purchase you did this year? honestly, none
5: most expensive purchase this year? And did you regret it? Mid Republican Romans, no regrets on those
6: game you played the most this year? MeG
7: game you wish you had played more this year? Star Wars Armada, or Poseidon's Warriors, or Naval Thunder
8: how many models did you paint (roughly)? 3000+
9:wich unused models/games did you sell/trade? none sold, a few bits and pieces traded here and there
10: would you review your year as a good year of wargaming, or did you want more? another good year, if you ignore my last place at Derby!
1: best new rules/game you played? Probably A Hundred Circling Camps.
2: worst new rules/game you played? I fear The Good, the Bad, and the Lucky; I had some good ideas, but they never coalesced. The Pendraken figures were all seconded to regular ACW armies a few months later.
3: best purchase you did this year? Leven Western town. Lots of flavour, and they're good and sturdy 1:300.
4: worst purchase you did this year? Too many Red Eagles WWI aircraft kits. They look good, but the Shapeways print outs are ready for action in less than 10% of the time, and will probably last better; and they're much easier on the nerves. Dishonourable mention of Reivers' 10mm Chinese halberdiers - desperately flimsy, tho' the rest of their ancient Chinese are very good, and the chariots are far better than Newlines' offerings.
5: most expensive purchase this year? And did you regret it? Nothing very pricey, but I think the War of Northern Aggression project has worked out the big one. It's been worth it, by general concensus, and the wife is determined to save New York for the Union next year.
6: game you played the most this year? Not sure. A lot of SYW, I suppose.
7: game you wish you had played more this year? Possibly neglecting pike and shot games, but I think they'll revive soon.
8: how many models did you paint (roughly)? c. 1, 500? That includes five ships, over twenty aircraft, twelve chariots, and a whole town (about fifteen pieces, including the town sign, the gallows, and a few loos). And a few bunnies.
9:which unused models/games did you sell/trade? Niente, nichts, nic, nada, nihil, rien, niks nie, mai mee, nuthin'.
10: would you review your year as a good year of wargaming, or did you want more? Yes, and yes
[/quote]
Greetings from Avignon. We'll go and dance on the bridge tomorrow to work off the cassoulet.
1: best new rules/game you played? Dragon Rampant
2: worst new rules/game you played? Home-brew WWII rules for a participation game (one of those "all the best" of Bliztkrieg Commander, Battlegroup, and something else)
3: best purchase you did this year? Pendraken Hedgerows and Fences. I don't have enough of 10mm terrain and these are just lovely.
4: worst purchase you did this year? Brought some recommended "nicer" brushes that just didn't work for me, and shifted back to my tried and true brand so a bit of an expensive experiment
5: most expensive purchase this year? And did you regret it? A starter box of miniatures. Not at all.
6: game you played the most this year? Infinity the Game (Corvus Belli)
7: game you wish you had played more this year? Dragon Rampant
8: how many models did you paint (roughly)? 250+
9: which unused models/games did you sell/trade? Lots of Battlefront 15mm and Flames of War books
10: would you review your year as a good year of wargaming, or did you want more? I got pretty involved with a group playing Infinity, a sci-fi game, so I was at the local game stores almost weekly. I also got some buddies over to try out Warband. Since I was gaming more, I was also more motivated to paint and make a dent in the old lead pile. Overall, I painted and played more games this year than I probably did over the past 4 years, so I would declare this year to be really awesome.
1: best new rules/game you played?
Wings of War.
2: worst new rules/game you played?
N/A
3: best purchase you did this year?
20mm Mounted Cossacks to complete my WW2 cossack battalion.
4: worst purchase you did this year?
BKC 3
5: most expensive purchase this year? And did you regret it?
See 3 above, no.
6: game you played the most this year?
Rapid Fire, not my WW2 favourite rules but popular at the Grimsby club.
7: game you wish you had played more this year?
AK47 Republic
8: how many models did you paint (roughly)?
Exactly 3, 1/72 KV1's from The Works. Disassembled, stripped, cleaned up and painted in white wash for winter eastern front. Took just under a week.
9:wich unused models/games did you sell/trade?
Some "OO" Model railway, Airfix and Matchbox 1/76 kits, Scalextrics 24hr Le Mans set, Osprey and other books, Black Powder Rules, some Warmaster blister packs. Lots of generic books to charity.
10: would you review your year as a good year of wargaming, or did you want more?
Played many good and a couple of dire games. I'm under constant pressure from wife to reduce the stash (by 50%) by selling stuff (which is justified as I have far too much). Would like more time to paint and model as, overall, I don't feel I've contributed anything to this years wargaming activities.
Hopefully 2018 will be better.
Martin
May I point out that if there is a best, there must be a worst, even if you're running Bach against Mozart?
I've really enjoyed reading though these posts, here are my thoughts
1: best new rules/game you played?
The Men Who Would be Kings - great little set.
2: worst new rules/game you played?
Tombstone - a Wild West skirmish sets, only played on Friday. Just too complex and fiddly.
3: best purchase you did this year?
Deep Cut Studios gaming mat
4: worst purchase you did this year?
Reaper Bones III - while not purchased this year, the figures finally arrived this year. And in the time between buying and arriving we have moved on from Fantasy skirmish games. Nothing wrong with the figures, just unlikely to get much use out of them.
5: most expensive purchase this year? And did you regret it?
Probably Blackgate Miniatures Ogre kickstarter. Haven't got the figures yet, but the shots of greens and pre-production casts look good.
6: game you played the most this year?
Hordes of War - out home brew Fantasy rules. Probably closely followed by mini epic our home brew sci-fi rules. Both allow big battles in an evening.
7: game you wish you had played more this year?
The Men Who would be Kings.
8: how many models did you paint (roughly)?
From an earlier count-up from a LAF thread, I got to 850, then released that I missed most of the farm aninmals, so probably 900, mainly 10mm
9:wich unused models/games did you sell/trade?
I don't think any
10: would you review your year as a good year of wargaming, or did you want more?
Real Life intruded heavily into this year, but still managed to get in a good number of games, and a fair bit of painting, both of which were a good means of relaxing.
;D

It's entirely possible I have confused the time lines in my head!! I did go in big for a couple of kickstarters a few years ago - and rather regretted it due to the long delivery times meaning that by the time stuff arrived interest had waned. Now I tend to go for smaller KS with fairly quick delivery windows.
