In episode three or so of The Crown Series Two, which I am having to watch as penance, there is a brief scene in the country home of Tommy Lascelles when he is summoned back to save the Nation (again). In the background there is a terrain board which looks suspiciously like Waterloo. What does it mean? Is it an attempt to humanise this scheming character or is it to indicate that there is an even darker side to him? And are the figures correct for the late 1950s or is this a huge error involving Pendraken figures which had not been cast at the time? We need to know.
Penance? But it's a drama about the life of our blessed monarch. Are you unwell?
Right, just checked. It's at 1:48 for others to check. It is certainly a terrain board. The right hand building looks like a La Haye Sainte type building, but beyond that it's impossible to tell. There are trees around it to "the south". And bearing in mind that only 0.0037% of the population could recognise Waterloo I think it's just there to show that he likes models and is therefore a decent sort who can be relied upon in a fix.
It's in it again at 19:07 - but I don't think it's Waterloo.

Well, later on towards the end the chap says it's Salamanca - They even used bits of the airfix LaHaye Sainte! Nice to a wargamer represented as a decent sort and KEVIII represented as what he was.
Tommy Lascelles comes across as a total control and order freak, a trait that no-one on this forum would recognise.
But imagine how scarey it would have been if Edward VIII had been depicted secretly playing WRG 6th Edition with Mrs Simpson.

Might that be the first historical anomaly in the series?

The 'Stirling Bridge' to which you refer was wooden. I suggest this is a recent re-enactment involving supporters of Stirling Albion and Glasgow Rangers.

I bet Edward and Wallis were competition gamers. Most likely DBM. They filmed their scenes but then cut them out as being too shatteringly dull, turgid and just utterly soulless.
As noted above, in Episode 5, which I reached and survived last night, the Queen interrupts Tommy Lascelles at his wargames table, which he identifies as Salamanca. The Queen then picks up one of the figures and replaces it IN THE WRONG PLACE ON THE BOARD. This is what happens when the wargames room ceases to be a boys only area.
But why Salamanca? Lascelles was in the Bedfordshire Yeomanry in WW!, and neither it nor the Bedfordshire Infantry Regiment were in the Peninsular and certainly didn't sport the battle as a battle honour.

I was gaming the Field of Gu'edina Early Bronze Age Sumerian battle last weekend but neither I nor, to my knowledge, my forebears trailed a spear for Lagash or Umma. :)
