As those who have been reading my musings, here http://www.pendrakenforum.co.uk/index.php/topic,16732.0.html (http://www.pendrakenforum.co.uk/index.php/topic,16732.0.html), will know I have decided to expand my existing AWI force
The existing force is based around the war in the south in 1781, particularly Guilford Courthouse http://www.pendrakenforum.co.uk/index.php/topic,14025.msg245318.html#msg245318 (http://www.pendrakenforum.co.uk/index.php/topic,14025.msg245318.html#msg245318)
The aim with the new force is to add some French but not get bogged down in the sieges of Savannah or Yorktown
After much musing and research I've decided on a 'what if' expansion of the campaign in Virginia in March to May 1781
In reality a small British force under Benedict Arnold, yes the 'turncoat', was sent into Virginia to disrupt one of the wealthiest of the 13 colonies
Lafayette was sent south by Washington to contain him with a small force of American Light Infantry
Arnold was then reinforced, in two phases, and came under the command of Major General William Phillips, this force then pursued Lafayette around Virginia before withdrawing to Yorktown where they came under the command of Cornwallis with the majority of his southern army
The 'what if' adds two French forces to Lafayette's command
- Volontaires Étrangers de Lauzun, the Duc de Lauzun had volunteered to join Lafayette's command but was ordered to remain in Newport by Washington
- Bourbonnais Brigade, Admiral Destouches was supposed to transport these troops to Virginia but was prevented from doing so by the 'First Battle of the Virginia Capes' on 16th March
The order has been placed :) :-w
While waiting I've been continuing my uniform research. The American Light Infantry are three combined battalions with companies drawn from 26 different regiments :o @-)
Over the 18 months or so before they headed into Virginia most of those regiments had two different uniforms, some had three @-) ~X(
Frustrating to work out who was still wearing what, but it will lead to some very varied units
I've also been working on the labels for the forces and started cutting out the 150 or so bases needed
Labels sorted, bases cut out :)
Uniform research progressed, slightly ~X( :!!
Diverted somewhat by developing a scenario for next weeks game, a large AWI game has been requested

Should help keep your AWI focus till the order arrives ;)
Bases sanded for Lafayette's Light Infantry Brigade and Arnold's initial force :)
Scenario for Saturday sorted :)
Just need to finalise the victory conditions :-\
Bases washed, hopefully I'll get some paint on them this evening :!!
Some simple victory conditions finalised, we'll see how they work out on Saturday :-\
Both sides of bases painted, edges next
I look forward to seeing those bases (with figures on them of course)
Keep the mojo high! ;)
Edges done on the bases, magnetic vinyl next, then labels
Scenario worked pretty well on Saturday :)
Shame the same can't be said for the British plan :( X_X

Another fantastic AWI game from Paul 8)
I think the Maryland Continental Brigade will have earnt a battle honor after their battlefield performance on Saturday (FWIW I was using the Virginia Continentals on the other flank against Tarleton's wing).
Looking forward to seeing the French and other reinforcements progressing. Roy and I did encourage Paul to do more AWI stuff - I made a reasonable contribution towards the cost of the figures since Paul has very kindly painted many WW1 figures for me over the past couple of years.
Vive la revolution!! :)
And much appreciated the contribution is :)
For me it is a win, win, win, win
I enjoyed painting the WWI figures, I get to enjoy playing with them, they help fund additional figures that I will enjoy painting, and I get to enjoy playing with the additional figures

I am a fan of the First Maryland of the Continental Line who, as you probably know, seemed to show up everywhere and usually were prominent in the action. They would today get several unit citations, particularly for Long Island and Guilford C.H.
I hate reading you stuff gentlemen, I could get back into this so easily, must resist! :D :-bd :-bd
Progress on AWI research and base preparation delayed by a present from my daughter
She got me one of these on a recent trip to Japan, a Japanese Type 10 tank
PS Not my video
Magnetic vinyl glued to bases :)
Labels proofread, interesting how many mistakes you can make on such a simple task #-o
Research resumed on the 26 different regiments that contributed to the American Light Infantry battalions :-B
Impatiently, I checked with Leon how my order was progressing :!!
He, patiently, advised that they have been cast and will be dispatched this week :) :)
A nice little research success this evening :)
One of the British battalions in this project is the 80th Foot (Royal Edinburgh Volunteers), Lt. Col. Thomas Dundas was the commander of this battalion at the time.
However he was also the commander of the Regular Infantry brigade of Arnold's / Phillip's force, so who commanded the 80th Foot while in action while he commanded the Brigade :-\
Buried in the "Gentleman's Magazine, Or Monthly Intelligencer, Volume 44", July - December 1837 is the obituary of one, General Sir William Maxwell, Bart. In 1778 following his exchange "after the unfortunate convention of Saratoga" became a Major, by purchase, in the 80th. It seems very likely that such an experienced Major would step up when the Lieutenant Colonel was commanding the brigade.
I must admit I really enjoy the research side of this hobby :-B :-B :-B
My order has left Middlesbrough and is currently on its way to Heathrow :)
My order arrived at Heathrow at 04:54am Friday 01 December
It was passed to NZPost at 03:00pm Friday 01 December and is now apparently heading to Auckland, New Zealand :)
The Royal Mail tracking system helpfully suggests "There may be more information on our delivery partner's website." and provides a link to the NZPost tracking system :)
The NZPost tracking system was down earlier this morning :( but is now back up :)
NZPost's tracking system advised "Product not tracked" :-/
Which apparently means "This product is not a tracked service, but may receive a delivery scan", I particularly 'like' the "may receive a delivery scan" ~X(
Good luck!

Well, "close enough for gub'nent work" , as we say in this neck of the woods. :D
On the plus side today's system is much better than the system in the elder days when you would fire off an International Money Order to some indecipherable address in Great Britain in the hopes of receiving something resembling your order four months later (maybe). :)
So true, definitely a modern day first world problem :-w :-w
I got mine first orders from the UK sent to an Aunt in the UK who would then send them to me as a gift, thereby avoiding international shipping charges and duty ;)

Amazingly the postal order/IMO system did seem to work remarkably well ordering stuff from the UK from here in NZ back in the mid-late 1970's, though you're quite right DGuy that orders took a LONG time to arrive. IIRC think only one person in the Wellington Warlords was unfortunate enough not to receive their order (25mm Assyrian 4 horse Chariots) - and the manufacturer did sent replacements after being contacted about it that did arrive some months later.

I like it ;D
More recently I got Amazon UK to deliver my copy of DBA 3.0 to the manufacturer of the figures for the project, free postage within the UK :)
The manufacturer then kindly posted it to me at cost, saving me about £18 :) :)
NZPost tracking system down again this morning ~X(
NZPost's tracking system has been up and down repeatedly but is consistently reporting "Product not tracked" ???
While I wait I've continued to research the uniforms of the 26 different regiments that contributed to the American Light Infantry battalions :-B
I've got most of what I need
NZPost's tracking service is still advising "Product not tracked" :-/
Royal Mail on the other hand is saying that the parcel arrived "In Country" in "Auckland New Zealand" at 06:50am Thursday 07 December :) :)
Will it make it down to Wellington in time to be delivered to my work tomorrow so I can start sorting over the weekend :-SS :!!
Parcel didn't make it to work today :(
Hopefully Monday :-w
Another wasted weekend! :)
This order seemed to be following the same trajectory of a previous order you documented.
According to the Royal Mail the parcel was delivered at 12:15pm Friday 08 December, 2.5 hours before I checked our mail room :-/ ~X(
Even the NZPost tracking system tells me it was delivered at that time
There are a couple of clues
Royal Mail: 12:08pm UNDELIVERED ADDRESSEE HAS PO BOX NEW ZEALAND
NZPost: Signed for by 1271, despite it also saying "Signature not required"
My work's Post Office Box number is 1271 so my order is sitting in a scruffy red bag that will be delivered to my work's mail room on Monday morning :-w :-w :-w
I'll hopefully finalise my uniform research on the American Light infantry and probably prepare some more bases.
I also printed off the labels for this project so may also label the already prepared bases
I'll pop in to the local wargames club to see what is going on and have another Big Battle DBA game scheduled for this evening
Not an entirely wasted weekend ;)
I visited my work's mail room and extracted a small box from the scruffy red that is our PO Box :) :) :)
Lots of sorting tonight :!!
I was diverted by For King & Parilament and a couple of other things over the weekend, so I haven't:
- finalised my uniform research on the American Light infantry, Loyalists have just moved to the head of the painting queues
- prepared any more bases, I have enough for a couple of painting batches already done
- labeled any bases yet
I didn't get all the sorting done last night @-)
I had to finish off the French artillery and the Americans this morning
Next step is to pick the first couple of British units and clean up the figures :!!
I've cleaned up the American generals, artillery and one of the light battalion
Figures are currently drying after their wash and will hopefully be undercoated this evening :-w :!!
Yes, I know I said I'd start with the British but this should encourage me to finish the uniform research for the Americans ;)
First batch undercoated :)
Officer's horses painted :)
About half the officers and men's jackets base coated :)
Artillery carriages and guns painted, iron work left to do :) :!!
Remaining jackets base coated :)
Iron work done, artillery ready for their wash :)
Keep it up! :D
Jackets dry brushed :)
Saddle blankets done :)
Buff trousers, facings and small clothes done :)
I think it's about time I started 'complaining' about not seeing any photo's. ;) ;D ;D ;D
Cheers - Phil

Caught up with Paul briefly after work today and he showed me the progress on the first batch.
I'm sure you won't have to wait too long for completion ;)
;D ;D ;D ;D
Really looking forward to seeing them ! :)
Cheers - Phil
Progress continues :)
Not quite at the pace Techno would like ;)
All small clothes and trousers done :)
Musket stocks & barrels and officer's swords done :)
For this project I'm using a wet pallet, something I haven't tried before
It is working very well, the musket barrels were painted with paint left over from the artillery's iron work which had been sitting on the palette for two days :) :)
This is going to make painting during the summer much easier :)
It is also very helpful when you spot something you missed, the paint is still on the palette :)
Most facings & turnbacks done :)
Slow process with a mix of different facings & turnbacks even in the same companies :-B
Four companies left to finish as it got too hot to paint #:-S
31 degrees C, 88 F, meant the paint was drying on the brush ~X(
Finished the facings and turnbacks :)
Started on the various bags :!!
Hope the painting is going well.
Think l will nominate Paul for title of largest emoji user for 2017 on the forum, with an honorable mention for Techno as runner up....
Painting is progressing better now the weather isn't so hot :)
Bags finished :)
Hair done :)
Hats, Cartridge boxes, boots and scabbards base coated :)
Hats and Cartridge boxes to be dry brushed next :!!
Then on to detailing @-)
Emojis are a useful shorthand, even if they are so 2015 ;)
(*)(*)(*)(*)(*) ;)
Hats, Cartridge boxes and Officers boots dry brushed :)
Tack on Officer's horses done :)
Keep it going!!
4 pages and no pics! Paul you are a tease!
Yeah we got to see pics

Bases for this batch labelled :)
Flags to be printed today and figures washed tonight :!!
They might get based on Saturday...
Squeaks of excitement.
Photo's soon then.....Just like Andy has hinted. :D

Flags printed & figures washed :)
Final dry brush done :)
Figure bases painted :)
Spotted that I'd missed one side of the hooves on one of the horses and the same for one figures shoes #-o
Final, final touch ups done
Once they are dry they need to be sorted and then based :-w
Figures sorted :)
Figures based :) :) :)
I'll leave them to dry overnight then touch up flocking, add shrubbery, add the flag and touch up edges :-w :!!
Once dry, varnish then maybe pictures if it dries before the sun goes :-w :!!
In the mean time I'll start prep'ing the next batch :!!
Painted and based
80 Foot
14 Mounted and Officers
3 Guns
97 Total
Next batch prep'ed and undercoated :)
Another American Light infantry battalion
What I like about Paul's approach to a new project is the enthusiasm, and pace he puts in. Slow down man, you are putting the rest of us to shame, whats wrong with a good bit of procrastination, followed by some thinking time?
;D
I had plenty of thinking time while I cast around for project ideas
Flock touched up & flag cut out :)
Added shrubbery, added the flag :) :)
Highlighted shrubbery, touched up edges :) :)
Varnished :)
Varnish dry 3-4 hours before sunset :)
Cloud rolled in, not enough light for photography :(
Forecast not good for photography until maybe Tuesday or probably Wednesday ~X(
5th page and over 2,000 views and still NO pictures ;)
Next batch, jackets base coated and touched up :)
Really looking forward to seeing pics, as I'm sure many of us are.
The sun brightened between showers so I took the chance to grab some pictures :)

The aim is to break up the uniform green

Horses of the next batch base coated :)
Hi Paul. I use magnetic vinyl on bases also. The first pack I had the self adhesive was excellent (and still is) but the second batch (same manufacturer) does not do the job. I have ended up using glue sticks on the base then applying the vinyl. Have you run into any issues? Do you use a secondary adhesive and if so what. Thanks.
I buy my magnetic vinyl from a sign writers supply store, it comes in a roll (26" wide) and I usually get a metre at a time and it lasts me a year or so
I use PVA (white glue) to glue it to the underside of my bases
Wind came up yesterday evening so no varnishing :(
Forecast is good today so should get them done
Horse's base coat touched up and dry brushing done last night :)
Manes, tails and hooves done so far this morning :)

Superb Paul, can't wait to see them in action!
The plan is to do Benedict Arnold's British force as these will be historic opponents of similar strength, then christen both forces in battle.
The dynamic should be quite different to the southern armies as the Americans have the better troops :o
Saddle clothes and jackets base coated on the British, German and Loyalist mounted officers and the Queen's Rangers Dragoons :)
Jackets dry brushed :)
Started on small clothes and white turnbacks and facings, but too hot and humid for detail painting :( ~X(
Finished extra wadis, for Jericho 1918 scenario, instead ;)
Looking forward to seeing them in action. Can't make my mind up whether to carry on with my AWI forces as they stand at present. Tempted to scale down to skirmish level actions only and concentrate of the SYW instead.
Another option is to add the few figures you'd need for AWI skirmish while continuing with AWI as it stands and do the SYW as well :d
This project is going to slow a bit now, first day back at work :(
Finished small clothes and white turnbacks and facings :)
Trousers done :)
Compromise - do SYW big battles.
With my return to work, domestic and gardening duties and hot weather this project has stalled a little :(
Hopefully I can make some progress tomorrow :!!

I've done some more of the turnbacks and facings, still about a third to do but as from various regiments several different colours left to do

Weather has cooled a little thanks to some cloud for part of the day :)

You and Mollinary both use great labeling systems - must seriously consider this approach.
And there is Arnold in his "turned coat" - a fine and capable soldier about whom I feel a great deal of ambivalence - lots of "if onlys". :-\ :(
Thanks for providing the who's who. :)

Thanks for providing the who's who. :)
Arnold must have had an 'interesting' time in Virginia, Lt. Col. Thomas Dundas and Lt. Col. John Simcoe, his two immediate subordinates carried orders from Sir Henry Clinton relieving him of command that they could use whenever they thought appropriate
Lafayette had orders from Washington to hang him if he was captured
I really find the research enjoyable, the connections can be fascinating.
Lafayette's father was killed at the Battle of Minden by British cannon ball. Major General William Phillips who took over command from Arnold was a an artillery officer at Minden.
His last words as he died of either typhus or malaria while the house he was in was bombarded by Lafayette's artillery are reputed to be "Won't that boy let me die in peace?"[
Great work once again 8)

Well done, lace is correct and the breeches for some of the crew and all the small clothes are a 'buff' colour for the Ansbach-Bayreuth :)
'Wally' is that the the Ansbach-Bayreuth carriage is a faded blue rather than a faded grey ;)
Really beautiful work

Chasseurs and Grenadiers of Lauzun's Legion and 76th Foot now on painting rods ready to be undercoated :)
Weather not looking promising, windy and showers forecast :-S
I may not get my lawns mowed :(
Less time pushing the mower = more time for painting? :)
Only if the weather is good enough for me to undercoat, otherwise there is the serious risk of nothing to paint until the weather improves on Thursday :o :-SS
Look forward to seeing the latest batch, especially Lauzun's Legion when completed.
Started working out what to order for 10mm Scots W3K FK&P forces since the rule are coming out shortly, but need to look at base sizes and number of figures per base.
As we were talking about last night the first two months of 2018 are gone :o
And I haven't even started working on the battle I want to run in May yet, though I do have the forces needed at hand - that should keep me busy till then.
There was a brief lull in the wind so I got the next batch undercoated #:-S

Thursday's supposedly going to be 'poop'.

Had a chat with Paul tonight about what we are going to do at this years Call to Arms Convention here in Wellington which is coming up in August.
A couple of years ago Paul put together a very well received AWI game (Cowpens IIRC) so this year we agreed that day one would be another AWI game featuring his new toys.
Day two is down to me - a quick look on my hard drive and I found a scenario I wrote up a while ago featuring Operation Vigorous - an unsuccessful attempt to run a convoy to Malta from Alexandra in June 1942. Can our newly printed merchant ships that we have received from Aksu survive the run through "Bomb Alley" and escape the attentions of the Italian Navy to arrive safely in Malta?....we'll just have to play the game to find out. Looks like my shipyard will be doing overtime to get all the ships I need ready in time.....there are quite a few ;)
It was indeed Cowpens :)
I better crack on with the painting then :!! :)
Will I need to paint my half of the ships from Aksu as well :!! :!!
Hats and cartridge boxes highlighted :)

The joys of autumn
Paul, I truly understand about the weather and finding an opportunity to apply those important coats. After having to repaint a few elements I started spraying my protective coats inside. Yep, I have a box about 16 x 16 that I actually spray into which absorbs any over spray so only have the fumes in a room for about 20-30 minutes (use a room we don't frequent very often) . I also spread a small piece of painting drop sheet out over the piece of furniture I do this on, and set the box on that. I only spray one element at a time, holding it inside the box which is fully open on one end. I've done this for years and have never had any problem or gotten spray on anything it was supposed to get on - but more importantly humidity has not been a problem due to having an HVAC system..
When pictures are ready I will be looking forward to them! I have really enjoyed following your project, but suspect you are going to need a good size table for the game, but can't wait to see it all!!!
Terry
Weather much better today than forecast so I have varnished Régiment de Bourbonnais :)
I'll have to see it the light is still good enough for pictures once they are dry :-w
I managed to grab some pictures just before the sun disappeared behind the nearby hills #:-S

First Battalion (I have no idea who thought a white cross on a white flag was a good design, probably the same person who thought white facings made sense on a white uniform)
Actually, it is not as invisible as you might think! The flags were made from a number of separate pieces of thick silk sown together, and the cross was made up of two 32cm wide strips, sown one over the other, so the outline ought to be visible. There is an excellent short article on French colours on the Kronoskaf SYW site.
The flag I used had some shading to show the white cross on the white background, unfortunately once glued on the flag staff the shading has disappeared :(
I'm not sure if it was a side effect of the PVA or if the shading was just too subtle :-\
Fortunately the remaining Drapeau Blanc, Régiment de Royal Deux-Ponts, is a little more colourful
Hmmm, can you paint the cross back in by using a slightly grayer shade for it, or for the four corners?
Terry
I have been thinking about that, might do a couple of experiments on a flat piece of paper first :-SS X_X
Now I'm not quite so diverted by my ECW project progress has resumed on the 17th and 43rd Foot :)

Sorry Phil, according to the 10 day weather forecast next Wednesday or Thursday are the first days of varnishing weather :(

I might get lucky and get a window between the showers and when the wind drops as it changes direction...
Move over to Wales then, Paul..... ;D ;D ;D ;D

Now all I need is some sun at the right time for some pictures :-w
Paul,
You might be interested to hear that since I restructured my Muscovite army - changing the Behemoth pike block to 2 Spear elements - I will be doing a different army for the GBnUIT. Yep it is going to be a British AWI army which I decided upon due to a friend doing an American army also for the tournament. Always loved the period and of course the uniforms are always a treat. it is a totally different approach than how you are going about it, but a common thread. My main British brigade will be he 35th in orange facings and the 54th in popinjay facings. My Behemoth element will be a combined Indian with Butler's Rangers war party. Made it a Behemoth because it is big in a foes mind and creates terror to it's enemies. Plus it will be fun to paint.
Terry
I look forward to seeing them Terry

My reinforcements for my Saratoga project have arrived.
We only started this project in 2010...
I have seen the units as you get them finished and nightly impressive they are too! But I cannot begin to imagine the size of battlefield you're going to need to use them all! Regardless, I am thoroughly enjoying watching your progress.
Terry
Final details and touch ups done on von Voigt's Brigade's :) :)
Will wash them tomorrow
Terry37, the plan is to play a demo game on an 8'x6' table with all the troops from this project in early August
Our regular host has a 15'x5' table so I think we will have a game with all my AWI troops sometime this year, we will be able to leave that set up for as long as the game takes

Basing mix has dried so I've touched up the flock :)

Sounds like a naughty vicar. Esp. in Australia.
Shrubbery added :)
Two out of three flags added :) :) :o
I realised I hadn't tracked down the flag for Erbprinz (Prince Hereditaire) Musketeer Regiment #-o
Appropriate flag found, will be printed and added tomorrow :!!
Shrubbery highlighted :)
Varnishing weather forecast for Thursday :-w
Appropriate flag printed and added to Erbprinz (Prince Hereditaire) Musketeer Regiment :)
Varnishing weather still forecast for tomorrow afternoon, once the temperature gets into double figures :-w
I have some good news and some bad news...
Good news, it finally got warm enough and the figures are varnished :)
Bad news, the varnish is still not dry and the sun has disappeared behind the nearby hills, so no pictures today :(
Tuesday looks to be the first day with enough sun forecast for pictures :-w :-w
The weather finally cooperated :)

Simply superb 8)
Brilliant! 8)
Those armies are stunning, Paul. These sort of images have been inspiring me to get on with my painting, which has speeded up a lot of late.
WOW! That is quite an impressive spread of figures!!!! And all so beautifully done too!!! Now let me see, how many HOTT armies will they make......
Terry
Terry this is my second AWI project :-[ ;)
Most of the troops from my first AWI project can be seen in action here http://www.pendrakenforum.co.uk/index.php/topic,14025.0.html (http://www.pendrakenforum.co.uk/index.php/topic,14025.0.html)
At some stage we will have a large game and get them all on the table
Wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow and wow.
And furthermore wow!
Stunning and delightful - the result of a lot of hard work and dedication.
Paul, great game report, and even more amazing the number of figures you've done. I am a very slow painter and modeler which is one reason HOTT appeals to me so much - I'm actually able to complete an army. But your paint work is awesome, and your armies are beyond impressive!
Terry
Very impressive group pictures, thank you
Amazing to see them altogether. Congratulation on completing(?) another outstanding project!
It's a light infantry brigade you have to expect speed blurs. :)
;D
Gorgeous mate, what a model army should look like :-bd
