Title: Dixie baggage elements

They look better on the tabletop than magnified like this.

The NMR KKK, of course, came into being just after the War of Northern Aggression, but the Knights of the Golden Circle were around earlier, so I felt justified in a slight elasticity.

The figures are well made and painted but I'm not sure what role they could
have in a wargame ?

They seem like an odd choice and, without wishing to be offensive in any
way, almost feel like a political statement in the context of the "War of
Northern Aggression" description.   I apologise if this was not the intention.

I'm not from the States so perhaps have missed any nuance here.

In the context of WW2, the choice to represent a Waffen SS execution
might seem similarly odd.

If I had a baggage element in a WWII German army, I'd certainly feel justified in including a few monocled heavies in long leather jackets. A reminder of the ideological stakes, if you like. But certainly not meant to give any greater offence than teasing one or two southern friends I have. Note I definitely drew the line at a lynching.

So...you have chosen to portray our virtuous southern women as....baggage! How dare you, Sir!

These would make ideal objective markers for Longstreet and other ACW games which feature objectives. As for offence, forget it. It seems to have become a national sport in this country of late - media-led of course.

I remember seeing, many years ago now, a diorama entitled something like "In war, sometimes ze niceties must be dispensed vith!"

It showed a figure with a blindfold, tied to a post in front of a bullet splattered wall. An SS officer in monocle and long leather coat (who had undoubtedly once been giving a nazi salute) held a hanky in one raised hand and a luger (presumably for the coup de grace) at his side in the other.

Across the few yards of concrete courtyard a Panther tank provided the firing squad!!

I was surprised to find the German couple I was with thought it a hoot.

We were, perhaps, less eager to be offended back then.

On the subject of the baggages, I find I must refer you to the song if they offend: Look away! Look away!  ;)

But they're clearly there to lure lascivious Yankees into an ambush, anyway.

This all reminds of an old Confederate soldiers song:

'You wear blue, I wear Gray,
I'm gonna roll your gal in the hay,
Itch, itch, critter itch,
Got that itch froma a Yankee b...
You keep your girl I'll keep mine,
Better wash yours with turpentine!'

Ah, the good old times; when people were still polite to each other! :D

Cheers,
Rob

What can I say Ace, you have captured the spirit of the thing.

I have never thought that the scope of history should be limited by the back reading of current sensibilities. Nor do I think that a sense of humor is the least of the senses.

I thought Kitty's KKK piece was done with a sense of humor and a sense of the times (plus it was nicely conceived and executed).

I am going to suggest a counterpoise for the Yankee supply pieces:
Four gentlemen in top hats and garish vests carrying carpet bags.
A few dancehall dollies being excoriated by a Methodist preacher.

Incidently, Kitty, Belle Boyd, the prototype for Confederate sirens, came from my neck of the woods.  :)

Actually, I have been wondering if I could make a plausible carpet bag!

You don't have a reference to a site where I can hear it, do you? Youtube isn't helping much.

No I'm sorry FK...
we sing it every now and then when we're re-enacting but I don't think there are any recordings of that. I hope not at least...

Cheers,
Rob

Its a game and they are game pieces.

Just be careful with those in mixed company here in the states, people are jumpy about this subject now more than ever.
