Is there any reason we can't buy separate swordsmen and Spearman? I know we have them under the "warrior" banner, but wouldnt people prefer to buy specific warriors? Like swordsmen or spearmen as separate units? Considering the range of a spear far exceeds that of a sword, thus adding to emersion?
If you ask that jolly decent Mr Leon chap nicely he will do you a special order at very reasonable rates ;)
My point is we have the potential for a "bigger" army kinda thing, I think it is something thatbwould be good for the entire range...
I do separate them for those armies I imagine to be 'regular'.
spears count as shieldwall, or resolute
Swords as fierce or powerful.
The more irregular forces, such as Minotaur and goblins suit mixed bases

Yeah I get that... My main concern is when I got my latest batch of warriors through, I now have 27 swordsmen and 23 spearmen...
Swords and those spears that are somewhere around six foot long have much the same reach because of how they are held.
Spearmen would tend to have a sword, axe or dagger for use if the spear was lost or broken so a spear and sword mix doesn't seem odd to me.
If you want a specific balance of figures, as has been said, Dave, Leon and co will provide that for a modest bump in cost to cover the extra time required to pick them.
I'm not sure why the split would allow for bigger armies? Surely if you're buying large numbers of figures you can just sort out the spears and swords from the multiple packs you'd need.
I may well be missing something but at the moment, as I am won't to say, this looks like a solution looking for a problem.
Spears at full arm extension will be somewhere around 8/9ft... A sword will be around 6ft reach...
What if somebody wishes to have 50 swordsmen but only 25 spearmen? Or vice versa, it isn't a solution looking for a problem, it's an idea that is viable and logical...
Not need to be funny about it!
I suppose it depends on how you view your armies behaving? The Barbarians and Goblins would be very irregular to my mind so a mix of all the weapons in a unit wouldn't look out of place. But something like the Apes or High Elves might be more structured and you'd want to arrange them as such.
At out end the Warrior moulds all contain 30 figures, usually split equally between the various weapons, so we clip off 25 assorted figures and send them out. We could customise the ratios slightly and send 15 spear/10 sword if folks wanted them, or we could supply extra figures for you to make up full bases of each type? I don't think we'd be looking to sell swords / spears separately as specific products though, as it would mean making more moulds and adding more codes to the ranges. It's easier for folks to just contact us when they need a certain makeup within the packs.
I'm guessing by "bigger armies" you mean liatsnthat look like "1-3 Swordsmen (melee, fierce) and 1-3 Spearmen (melee, resolute)" instead of "1-3 Warriors (melee, May be Fierce and/or Resolute" sort of thing?
I don't have Warband but can you just play with more points and increase the minima/maxima proportionally?

Leon does it state anywhere in the rules that they are set to 25 miniatures? Or is that extra 5 miniatures in regards to waste? Pick the best 25 of the 30?
Also how many men would be required to a 80x40 Base? It's difficult to split the spearmen into 2 equal groups without having an odd one... And same with swordsmen... Or are one of the command groups meant to be put with these warriors?
Also I looked at this idea from a business stand point too... As it could increase revenue towards you guys, business doesn't survive on love and care haha

There are basing suggestions but nothing is hard and fast. You can build your bases however you see fit.

As many as you think looks good and fits your idea of how your unit fights (densely packed close order foot, or open skirmishing swarm).
Chieftain
I have about 17 on most of mine.

With the fantasy figures, from about 10 to 20 should fit on an 80x40 base
If you have a few odds and ends then yes they can go on command bases.
You will find with bigger bases you can adjust numbers of figures without it affecting the look to any great degree. So you can have slightly different numbers on a base, and you may find some poses lead to denser formations. If you want to go really dense, to give a solid mass of troops then you can trim the cast on bases a bit. There is a really good example on the forum of an undead army using this style of basing.
There are also Warband examples of building different units with different formations on the big bases, this can look really effective too.

either way I've got another few sets to buy in order to complete my Base army... Do Pendraken take stock to shows or just pre orders? Thinking about heading to Fiasco as I'm quite local ish

We'd only have the army packs with us at the shows, but if you're heading along to Fiasco, let me know what you need and we should have time to get it cast up and packed into the van.

due to home commitments don't think I can risk going... Partner is due to give birth on Nov 3rd...
I think not going is a wise call ;)
Good luck with the baby :)
Same from me, Moggy !!
Cheers - Phil
Congratulations to you and your partner, Moggy!
All the best for the event.
Is this your first? Or do you already know what you are getting in to? :-)
Not many things have given me more fun and pleasure than wargaming but my kids are up at the top of that list!

Yeah, probably not worth risking that... Although it'd make a good story once the bruises went away!

Congratulations to you both.
I went to a Society of Ancients games day at the Tower of London the day after my eldest was born
While your partner is giving birth you will be called all the rude names under the sun , It will all be your fault and she will swear that she will not let you and your privates anywhere near her again
So there is no way your going to be in her good books for some time so I think you should get your priorities right - Go to Fiasco :)
P.S If she storms out and goes to her mothers you will get
much more sleep than Junior will let you have in the first few weeks. And you will get lots of time to paint your miniatures in peace.
Its a Win! Win! really :D
This is Number 4 haha!! Although none of our previous have been terrible on a night time... And I keep trying to ship her to a factory in China but apparently they don't take whiney English women...
Congrats on the kids!
What scale are they, and whats the base size you keep them on?
Ive gone the "Justin Borges" route on the 30x60mm bases with 8-10 guys on it. Skeles and Dragonmen FWIW
Ive separated the spears, halberds and swords for basically the same reason Lemmy said, and for aesthetics(I love ranks of congruous arms on the table)
I did end up with 2-3 of each out of the standard starter pack, and still have a few left to paint. I almost cant bring myself to mix the Dragonmen or my skeles(former humans with their act together even into Undeath) like unruly plebs. After all, what are the Peasant units for?
Mine will be on the 80/40 bases as I like the "big army" appeal to this scale...
Moogy,
Congrats for a November birth. For your swordsmen and spearmen. I know Leon does specials. I have not played yet but I did pick up the pdf ruleset. There is no avantages to either weapon. Although if you face cavalry a 12 foot spear is better. Looks better the rules don t care. Whatever make you comfortable with the army. If you are fighting sword or axe armed men. Sword and axe in the front ranks with spears in the rear. Odd yes but I saw a programme viking re enactment maybe it is on you tube. These guys swords the works and umpires. When they hit each other it become a shoving match. The guys with the spears had the most kills. All they did was slide in between their rank and stab the enemy. I am looking forward to seeing maybe some pics of your troops.
Jean
I'm a November baby myself. I just thought it might of been an idea to make "separate" ranks of warriors to perhaps expand the playset a little
Moggy,
You may want to go with a diorama style base. Two to three ranks of spearmen or swordsmen with one or two swordsmen in front as officers. A pack of wood elves archers in front of your troops as skirmishers. Let me know if the baby is born around 3rd of november.
Best regardes,
Jean
Guys.
Explain to a non gamer......(I never remotely have the time, I'm afraid.)....I just make the wee chaps for you to game with....I'm not jealous in the slightest. :^o :^o :^o :^o :^o :^o
Does it make a lot of difference on how many figures are on a base ?
I can understand the actual bases on opposing sides, needing to have the same frontage....But the number of figures ?
Do different rule sets need different numbers of models on each base ? (If yes.....I imagine that could be a complete pain.)
Genuine question, chaps.
Cheers - Phil
No difference what so ever, it's pure aesthetics sir!
Phil, some rule sets rely on the number of figures on a base to differentiate between troop types/ formations. Others, such as Warband, just need your opponent to be able to tell what the unit is. One figure in the middle of the base would do for the latter - though the aesthetic impact would be rather reduced!!
It doesn't make a difference but it's about the aesthetic... I'm a bit of a purist when it comes to most things, kind of... If you're gonna do it, do it right...
Also it would be cool to have rules for swordsmen and Spearman as technically there play style would be very different. I'm just a bit awkward is all... And stubborn, how she puts up with me I have no idea... And me and the missus believe our little one will be here early :)
At the level of things like Warband there's not much difference between spearmen and swordsmen. The being wielding them has far more impact.
It's a top down rule-set not bottom up.
Thanks, chaps. :)
But....yet again.....As someone who has probably played barely a dozen 'war-games', with small soldiers.....And those were always refereed by folks such as the 'twins'.....(Where I could ask...."Can I do this....Can I do that..."....and simply roll the dice, to get a result.)
Is it not best to 'tweak' the 'rules' to suit your own 'interpretation' as to what you think works the best....or gives the most realism ?...Obviously with your opponent's consent ! ;)
Perhaps this should go into a brand new topic ?
Cheers - Phil
I've never played with a group that didn't tweak* the rules-as-written to some degree or other.
It's not like the Wargames Enforcement Squad are going to turn up if you change things :)
But if playing with people you don't know well (casual pick-up games or competitions mainly) it helps to play the written rules rather than spend time sorting out both sides house rules.
Mike
For a value of "tweak" up to near rewriting of them :)
Does it make a lot of difference on how many figures are on a base ?
Hello,
In all sets of rules the base represent the width and depth occupied by troops. In some set you put at least one to as many figures that you want to show what the base represents and to make them into dioramas (extension of your ego). Other games bases represent formation from close four figures, open 3 three figures, loose 2 figures and an open and close represented by a deeper base and four figures. Some rules casualties come with taking off figures or whole bases.
Best regards,
Jean
