Hi all,
Recently put in a large (£300 :( ) order for a Soviet 42' Tank Corps for use in a campaign next year.
Having never painted soviets before I just wondered if anyone could shed any light on the Vallejo colours they used for:
- Russian uniform & highlights
- Helmet green colour
- Tank green colour & highlights
Any help would be much appreciated!
Jake
Sorry, Jake.
Personally can't help you there....But someone should be along later....(Or tomorrow morning).... to give you some advice.
Cheers - Phil
I think Russian uniform colours varied a lot - there is a Vallejo paint called Russian Uniform, but it is very much a green/grey shade, and most Russian uniforms tend to be be more of a Tan / Brown colour. It is probably worth having a look for the Flames of War painting guides, as they use Vallejo colours.
Ah yes good idea, I forgot about those. Handy with them being Vallejo colours!
I'll have a look now.

The FoW site is useful. For the AFVs I use Russian Green, and then drybrush with some GW colours I have. Uniforms wise, the tan colour was a summer issue, the greener version a winter one. Previously I have done both, to make one battalion stand out from another. This time I would go for the tan version throughout as I prefer the colour.
Hi Jake
Try this site: http://www.artizandesigns.com/painting-guides.php
Just be aware it is for 28mm figures.
Cheers Paul
The cloth and dye used for Russian uniforms was of variable quality. Add to the the use and abuse of the uniform, sun bleaching etc and any shade from washed out Khaki to Brown or even a British Unitform Khaki would be suitable.
I would use any of the following as the base coat. You could vary the base coat to differentiate companies and or brigades
Russian Uniform
Russsian Uniform 924
Brown Violet 887
Khaki 988
Coat D'arms
Faded Khaki 537
British Khaki 501
Tank Colour
Tanks were a dark olive green, but this is really to dark for them at this scale.
I would use
Vallejo reflective green 890
Dark Cam olive green 894
Humbrol 30
Humbrol 32
Camouflage was sometimes used but not often. the 5th Guards Tank Corps was pattern painted with brown swaths before Kursk
If you can find then
The Eastern Front Camouflage and Markings 1941-1945 by Zaoga and Guardsen is good
Much harder to find but has more on actual camouflage is Camouflage of the tanks of the Red Army 1930-1945. Be aware this was initially only available with Russian Text. You can get an English version, but how hard that will be I don't know - neither comes up on an amazon search
Tanks Encyclopaedia is worth checking for camo patterns:

There is a great site on the Russian army (searh RKKA WWII), but it comes up as blocked as a high risk site and access denied. Shame as it has loads of really useful info on all types of Russians AFVs.
Wow thank you very much, couldn't have asked for much more!
You are right about the darker colours not being suitable for this scale.
I am planing on using an English Uniform style undercoat with a heavy highlight of either khaki or Iraqi sand. Followed by a wash of agrax earth shade.
I'm gonna do a few testers and I'll do a post when I have my first batch done.
