Very occasionally I paint non-Ethiopians
For instance some local people had the crazy idea of opening a game store in my little home town. Since it doesn't draw from a large population, most people seem to play 40k and I decided that what with the "new GW" and all I'd give it another go after all these years.
Since the boxed 30K games make them affordable I decided to go with Horus Heresy marines. Also decided to go with Reaper's Marine Teal as the base color. Here is one of my test marines.
Normally I wouldn't have gone with lava bases but I decided that this was a good opportunity to use my Basius pads.
A lot of time was used trying to work out the right color for the bolters. Ended up deciding on a reddish color.
Here are some of the Termies and the Dreadnaught I have:
I've got most of the first batch of Marines started with a basecoat, shade layer and one highlight. One more highlight and I think they'll be ready for a wash.
Sometimes I play a game called Dead Man's Hand, and a few years ago I bought some Artizan 7th Cav figures for it. For seemingly no reason I decided to do a quick paint job on them this week.
Uniforms and leather basecoated and washed:
Mostly done. Need to remind myself on the ranks for these guys in DMH and also do up the bases.

Both batches are very very cool!
Very nice, sir! Like the both but particularly relate to the US Cavalry patrol
Quality, nice work!
Very nice indeed !

Very nice indeed

Andy
Didn't spot this before! Both very tasty. The red on the bolter works very well, compliments the bronze on the edge of the armour whilst contrasting with the armour plate itself.
Very nice US cavalry.
The 7th Cav shot up some Indians this week but due to the deadly shooting of the Mexicans against my Law Men allies we were not able to interrupt the transfer of the smuggled rifles.
In other news I layed down some of GW's Hashut Copper on the Marines.

[edit]
Oh and thanks to everyone for the encouragement. It's always appreciated.
I do like those.
(I think it's also because I find certain shades of 'blue' so pleasing to MY eye......Seeing them on a screen, of course, you never know if you're seeing the 'true, in the flesh, colour'.....
I see these as a slightly 'turquoise' shade......What about everybody else ?)
Cheers - Phil
Turquoise and copper-bronze to me :)
Also, Beaky Marine rocket launcher? Lovely!
Uh, the rocket guys are currently headless. I was tempted to buy some beakies at my FLGS's flea market but they were painted and I hate stripping minis.
Did a blue-black wash on the armor and a purple wash on the copper. Then I did some lining with Reaper's blue liner.
Still a lot of detail work to do not to mention weapons and backpacks. I got shipping notices from Pendraken and Copplestone not to mention the package of Aeronefs I received on Friday. I need top paint faster.

I think you are showing your age there. Memory is nowdays measured mostly in Gigs if not Terrabytes.

Very nice, like the funnel details.
Started trying to finish off the marines one squad at a time. Starting with the assault marines which I then realized will have to have jump packs done up.
Base coat on the weapons. Also did up 5 bases.
Highlighted the metal and put on a white edge to hopefully bring out the highlight with the red.

These are close to finished enough for now. After the army is done I can go back and do some freehand and do the rivets.
REALLY nice work ! 8)

Great work, the humans behind show GW scale creep too
Cool :)
Well, I dunno about scale creep (though GW is a bugger for it), those Marine should be 7ft+ tall OUT of their Power Armour. The new Primaris are even bigger :D
I realized that I had picked the wrong mini for the Assault Marines Sergeant had to finish up this guy instead
(https://i.imgur.com/SE65ovW.jpg)
Also added a bit more crust to the lava on the bases
Jump packs with a base coat
(https://i.imgur.com/P2UxavF.jpg)
I think they are now at least done to the point that they can be glued on. On a related note, I perhaps shouldn't have added the crest onto the sergeant. Ooops.
I really like the Tolkienesque look of the Oathmark minis from Northstar so I've got an idea to do some up for Dragon Rampant or other fantasy skirmish games.
Here is a shot with some of my Reaper Bones dwarves to test how the scale matches. Most of Reaper's stuff is pretty fat compared to Oathmark's dwarves.
Also might have given into temptation and picked up a bunch of Footsore dark age guys to be Rohirrim. With Guinevere as Eowyn, of course.
Do you guys like her with a live or dead horse?

Originally she wasn't for sale. She was a bonus mini for orders over a certain threshold. But only for one month; which fact escaped my notice. I mean the one time I resist buying the new shiny would be the one time I should have bought it, wouldn't it?
I sent an email begging for her even though it was past the deadline but heard nothing. In my despair, I went out and bought those Aeronef ships and enough 10mm fanatsy stuff to keep me busy for years. But apparently I wasn't the only one who had remorse for not getting Guinevere because it wasn't too long before the Footsore newsletter had a blurb about how our cries end entreaties had been heard and she was being added to the catalog.
So yet another army for the backlog.

Do you have a live horse in a more
static pose?
That one looks like it is about to exit stage right ;)
Yeah, I was looking around but didn't see any standing horses. I would definitely have to either find or buy one. And really someone should be holding the reigns or the horse could well be exiting stage right.
The dead horse is a more dramatic scene, anyway.

Nice Dwarves!
Agree - like your thinking. :)
They the Oathmark Dwarves?
Tasty.
I covet then, the elves and the goblins, but have no time or need for them! I do have a box of snake men under the desk but they're for doing upnand flogging. On :)

Yeah, they are. I'm a fan of the Oathmark line. Well I guess the elves could stand to be somehow more elvish but I'm thinking of getting them to be Gondorians... I may have a problem.

They are coming along very nicely.
What colour have you used for the spear shafts?
And, are you going to add some shading to the mail, as the beards look good with different tones, but the mail is rather monochrome at the minute?
Yeah, Once these are done, I'm hitting the mail with some Polyshades, aka Dip.
The spear shafts are Reaper's Tanned Leather.

"Boggies are an unattractive but annoying people whose numbers have decreased rather precipitiously since the bottom fell out of the faiy-tale market. Slow and sullen, and yet dull they prefer to lead simple lives of pastoral squalor. They don't like machines more complicated that a garrote, a blackjack, or a luger......
They seldom exceed three feet in height, but are fully capable of overpowering creatures half their size when they get the drop on them."

Decades since I read it too.

They are from Little Big Men studios, a special set sized for these dwarves.
Since you only wet them when you stick them on they are pretty easy to apply.

A belated thanks guys for your encouragement.
Trying to work out the skin tone for some orcs. Trying to base it on the green ocher color that I used for my 10mm orcs.
First try:
With a different shade color
(https://i.imgur.com/VobydSa.jpg)
The problem seems to be that, in photos, the varnish that was applied after the first try kind of simulates the brighter highlights on the second. Hmmmmm.
Anyway, any color scheme advice would be most welcome.
Well, I like it ! :)
It's got a 'lovely' grubby look.
Maybe....Just highlight the skin tones a little bit more ? :-\
Cheers - Phil
Looks great!
Messing around with cloth colors.
Bone color with a sepia wash. I've got to say that while this pic makes his sword look like the best weathering I've ever done, sadly I can't say it made any such impression while I was painting it.

Hmmmm, I'd say the main thing I've learned in the last few years is to be bolder with color than I'm normally comfortable with. But wanting these to be LotResque is working against that now.
What should I try next? Maybe a dirty orange-brown?
I think that this orange looks the best of them so far.

What Phil said 8)
Agreed
Great looking, Llc!
I actually believe that a former boss modeled for the whip-slinging orc - dead ringer.
At my local store, people have taken to the new 40K Kill Team. Which is nice, because the rules are better and simpler than 40K and it's much easier to paint 10 or so models.
Decided to do some archaeology and dig up some Tau that I've had for a long, long time. Since I'm going to need a color scheme I whipped up this guy.
On him I'm thinking of try some kind of khaki on the cloth. For the second victim I might try something blue. For a very small force maybe white is even doable.
Be interesting to see how those colour combos work.
Cheers - Phil

Hmmm, perhaps we could try out this "Preview" button...
Ah. Yes.
Finished up the base coats (except for the back of a spear apparently) and threw on washes.
You need to add a width= or height= inside the first set of brackets.
For example
{img width=700}https://i.imgur.com/3ExI2RC.jpg{/img}
I've used curly brackets here rather than square so you can see what I'm doing the real thing has square ones.
And here's the image resized (you can vary the numbers used to increase or decrease the image size)
Nice job once again and the bases look nice and muddy 8)
Great job, I use width=800...
Normally I resize (and if I'm feeling fancy-crop) the pics before uploading them.
Not having any strong conception on how the shields should be done, I randomly threw some paint around.

Black with red star. Look suitably Orcy 8)
I prefer the red star one, like Matt.....Or go with your thoughts, on the green.
Either for me.

The black with the red star looks good.
The 2 green ones with stripes work well too. I think a dark background with a pattern looks better than the solid colours.
I agree with fred ;)

I also like the "shield shop" in the background, "Shields for the discriminating Orc - we custom fit".
I followed everyone's excellent advice

Good point Terry37, I'll be using green for the Riders but if I do use green on these guys it will be quite dark. More of a green-black.
Working on the skin for the trolls and experimenting to see how the colors I used on the orcs work on these guys.

It wasn't ?
Are you sure about that ? ;)
Cheers - Phil
Remember Techno knew Noah personally! ;) ;D
Went with some very dirty yellow cloth. The orange comes in in with the leather.

I think that the wood and fur need to be brought up closer to their original basecoats.
Looking damn good, already !!
Cheers - Phil
These guys are approaching done. I feel that more should be done on their faces but not sure what exactly. I guess I could go for another highlight.

Maybe.....But they look great to me as they are.

Got the last of the large units started.

Washes have been applied.

Not pictured, their shields.
Don't worry, Cookie !
Those are really looking 'The Biz'.
Cheers - Phil
These Reaper Bones orcs are quite a bit bigger.
Not sure what I'm going to do with the plate armor some of them have.
Looking very nice indeed !
A 'dirty' bronze for the plate armour ??
Cheers - Phil
Broke my phone so not too many pics lately.
Put some paint on the leaders crew. The base coats are a little brighter than what I put on the rank and file. Some washes should bring that back a bit.
I'm going to paint up some more wargs so I'll do the fur on these at that time.
Liking those
Same here !
Cheers - Phil
Those Bones Orcs are *very* meaty - proper scary if you had to face them :)
Think I did bronze for the plate when I did some, looked suitably "low tech" barbarian!
Those are really lovely 8)
Thanks guys.
The sculptor of those Bones orcs had a Kick Starter trying to start a plastic range of a different but still very nice style of orcs in plastic.
Sadly, like a lot of small companies trying to do plastic on KS he didn't get enough money to do the tooling.
Started the wargs and did up the pelts on the orcs.

Damn fine work, Cookie. :-bd

Hmmm, debating getting Fireforges Byzantines' to stand in for Gordorian soldiers.

Well before I buy those maybe I should take a look at these LotR figures that came in the new box set from GW

Green orcs on square bases=Mantic
Recently painted orcs = Oathmark
Unpainted = GW

Metal = Footsore
Had some bits of mesh as a byproduct of making trees and decided that they could be made into scrub for my orc bases.

I like the two in the middle, I think.
Looking tasty

Played a small skirmish using GW's LotR rules this afternoon.

The washer to the bottom left is the dwarven leader attempting to demonstrate that old age is no hindrance to climbing rocks. It's not but rolling 1's sure is!
Look like great fun, Cookie. :)

Tried out my orc paint scheme on a couple of GW Morannon orcs that came with the starter box.
Came off better than I expected given the vastly different armor style. In fact the grey brown was a departure from my other orcs and I don't think it really worked.

I was referring to the grey cloth under the left orc's arm pits. Once washed it seemed to be match the ocher skin too closely.
Sorry, Matey....
Missed that point....With you now !! :)....You're right, it does come out rather closely to the skin tone.
Cheers - Phil
These are approaching done. At least once I decide what to do with the shields.

Stonking !! :-bd
Can't wait to see them finished. :)

So many horses!
Neigh! :D
Too many horses?
Solution:(https://i.imgur.com/Tj26GLC.jpg) Uruk horse thieves.
Decided to experiment with some new primer on some Uruks. Normally I use the vallejo
(https://i.imgur.com/x1hex8z.jpg)
Did the armor and the skin, which looks more red here than in person
(https://i.imgur.com/9At1uWx.jpg)
Now what color should the leather and cloth be? Hmm.....
Looking good.
Cheers - Phil
Coming along nicely!
Nice

Some more basecoating

Washes applied. I don't think the yellow leather has worked exactly right. Also I should probably try to keep the red hilights on their skin to a bit smaller area.

The yellow leather works for me but them I'm used to Buff coats ;)

Very cool work
Liking, lots ! :-bd

Working on some basing. I'm using a combination of Homax wall texture (which I think might be similar to Artex in the UK). I got it in powder form and combined that with brown paint and my usual texture (combination of sand and songbird grit). Experiments showed that even with the additives this mix would be sturdy when tried and also that rocks would stick without glue. In comparison, filler/spackle was a bit weak.
Bought some slate just because white aquarium rocks show unpainted bits way too easily. Hopefully with a bit of drybrushing and a wash these will be ready for some tufts.
Looks great

Good stuff!
Always love LotR stuff. We're playing a big battle LotR HOTT game this coming Saturday! Eowyn will be riding to glory for sure!

Those look belting, Cookie ! :-bd

I can not comment on the size of the box that arrived from Northstar while I was staying with my mother in the hospital. However...
I'm thinking that these Tribals might do for Woses
(https://i.imgur.com/k5nbxks.jpg)
And these crew will do just fine as Corsairs
(https://i.imgur.com/2Npq4nf.jpg)
Meanwhile, my attempt to do some swaping to turn the Barbarians into some Uruk Hai that would match my non GW minis better than the ones I painted
(https://i.imgur.com/mE3QzXd.jpg)
To my mind they are wearing too much to really work and I'm not sure I have the right heads. I was surprised how well the Warlord pike fit to Barbarian body.
There is also a Sudanese with a blowpipe that might be useful for Far Harad.
Interesting choices.
I particularly like the orcs!
"We are the fighting Uruk-Hai!" :)
I'm more used to "Elder Scrolls" Orcs than GW ones these days and they are rather better dressed.
Look forward to seeing those painted, 'Cookie'. :)
Cheers - Phil
Started painting some horses for the Riders:
The bare horses in front are from Eureka and are a bit small. I used them to test some schemes and they will make good objective markers.
This is the guide I'm using. (https://www.beastsofwar.com/project/1252022/)

Some terrific shading there, Cookie. I like the range of colours you have chosen for the horses.
Now those look fab

I DO like those ! :-bd

Now for something truly random. A friend went on a bit of a spree and bought all of GW's new Contrast paints. After a quick run home to get my primers paints and some surplus orcs we got to experimenting.
The nurglings in the middle show off what I'd call a standard quick technique. Put on a base coat (in this case I think the were pale olive, pale green and just the white primer) cover with the new "Gloss" Nuln Oil then finally apply the contrast paint liberally (nurgle flesh here).
Some quick and random notes
- The glossiness of the coat under the Contrast makes a big difference.
- In general I think the mid tones worked best. Dark colors didn't show as much contrast and light colors tended to seem like a wash.
- I was surprised how much I liked the white and black contrast paints.
- The paints labeled as human (or dwarf) flesh didn't look too great over white primer. Maybe with the right undercoat they'd be better.
- It's a pain to try and decide when the gloss wash was dry.
- The Contrast Medium could be pretty useful but for good results I think you have got to get the ratio spot on.
Damn fine job you're doing on those, Cookie ! :-bd
Cheers - Phil
It's been a while since I thought to post here but once I managed to get my hobby room somewhat cleared I have been painting a bit.
Right now I have a set of FireForge Byzantines and Russians which I'm hoping to use for soldiers of Gondor. I had the idea of using some tree charms to make their shields and this is what's come in so far.
Any favorites?
The treess laid down in front are just too wide to make it onto a shield but maybe they will be useful for some standards or as building decorations.
The big one on the right for me ! :)
Cheers - Phil
A very nice idea!
Looking good.
What a great idea!
Middle one for me.
"Seven stars and seven stones. And one white tree."
Middle gets my vote. The left one has a bit of a Yggdrasil vibe.
Bless you!
Primed with some Vallejo grey then side brushed on some Reaper blue liner. It was easier than I was fearing. I do wish that the circular shield was a millimeter or so bigger.

It's on the small side but still a reasonable size for a "Dark Age" shield.
If anything, I'd say other other shield looks a trifle large and unwieldy.
That said, they both look fine to me.

The large shield is just a bit bigger than the oval shields that com on the sprue.
With all due respect to J.R.R. I think I'm going to have to use some artistic license because there is no way that I'd be able to pull off black mail let alone black mail combined with black cloth as a uniform.
