Title: wich british models to use for pirate games
Post by: petercooman on 15 October 2017, 10:36:46 AM
Chaps,

As stated in the title.

Malburian era? Seven years war? I see lot of people using AWI but that's too late. Most famous pirates were around 1720.

So malburians with tricorne seem to fit. But would live to be sure!

The swabbies would look much the same throughout the period, often dressed in whatever came out of the slop chest, so it's mainly the officers and marines that matter. I'd definitely go for the tricorne hat look of the Malburian era.

Uniforms for Royal Navy officers weren't laid down until 1748 when Lord Anson introduced them so I think you have some lee way in choosing officer figures.

Thanks!

I forgot to mention it were the marines/infantry I was unsure about.

Ship/cannon crews will be usual 'pirates' from foundry/ redoubt.

I wanted a close look to the black sails series so I think malburians will quite fit that.

Although not a model, I would suggest Keira Knightly. She has pirate form.

I'd be tempted to go early and have a look at the 1672 stuff from North Star!

Not a bad choice!

I'm a bit torn between wargames foundry and redoubt enterprises at the moment.

Foundry having the nicer sculpts, but redoubt really the cheaper option, with lots of guncrews for pirates! Unfortunately, they don't have malburian era models, only 7 years war and french indian war.

i must say their french indian war stuff looks good as well.

It'll be a good use of your new boats either way :)

I'm tempted by North Star's 1672 at some point, I must confess, as I really want to do some Channel piracy with the Dunkirkers!

Well, i'm really enjoying black sails for the moment,so i'll go with the later era.

But, i have been lookingat black scorpion's pirates as well, and although they are somewhat pricey, they are gorgeous as well! I have some lying around already so they are another good option!

So i ended up ordering the black scorpion ones to pick up at crisis. Looking at comparison pics on the web, i found nothing really compared well sizewise with black scorpion. Since i already have some of their pirates, it was the most sensible thing to do,but not the most affordable ( 90£ for 35 models  :o ). But you can say what you want, they are some of the nicest pirate models around!

I don't really need 35 to play flashing steel (wich i already bought) , but i wanted some choice in weapons etc + i added a privateer gang to my order, to give me the chance to play pirates vs privateers vs royal navy. Since we have an average of 3 players on our game nights, i thought getting it played would have a bigger chance of succes if i had enough models for three forces!

Also ordered a jetty from sarissa for my ships to rest  :D

On the Yahoo! Group - Andreas made a casual comment on the end of some rules queries so I asked for more! Answer is... out when it's out. IIRC the Ganesha site is set up so once you've ordered once you can then download any revised files?

Well  wargames vault updates them automatically. Just happy I didn't print them yet.

Heh, yes... Andreas confirmed you'll be able to download them again no probs - it sounds like he's introducing the Advanced SOBH Reactions rules instead of the Reserved Action rules in the original and tidying up all the queries from the last few years. I'm tempted to get a copy now and rename it so I have the original as well :D

Colonel Bill's sell civilians that may be of use ... ahem, shameless plug  :-[ [Pendraken did cast the figs though]

I was going to offer some troop suggestions, but see you've already got those now.

Well i'm happy that I got this version then. Not too keen on the advanced SOBH. Hadn't seen your post last time.

Should have known earlier. I passed colonel bill's stand at crisis!
