I come across odd photos on the net daily, as you do, I thought I'd share a few and see if anyone else has some to share?

I will add completely silly (but vaguely military) photos here whenever I see them.
WWI listening devices are a good bet.

By their haircuts, they're Mexican
cuachicqueh - the ones who had taken six prisoners but had refused promotion, since they preferred fighting to commanding. They frequently wore paint, but I admit this uniform is a variant I hadn't seen before.

So a variant of Aztecs?
I think they are pathfinders for 101st airborne, probably the day before D-Day.

Doesn't seem to have thought through the whole gas-mask thing. The gas-mask might protect him from the gas, but when the horse gets gassed, he's going to have big fall!

Brilliant. 1) They'll send you home on a psycho discharge ticket; 2) if you have to stay, at least you've got company; 3) and who'd shoot at you like that, or hit you while laughing?
While he looks strange, this is one of the famous Schlachtkatzenwerfers. The device around his neck which appears to be a gas mask is the actual sling launcher. The Battlecat is first placed on the helmet so it can acquire a target. I understand that the sound of an incoming battlecat invoked shear terror in the enemy!
Why is the Schlachtkatzenwerfer wearing only a nightshirt you may ask? battlecats were known to target anything in a uniform. His attire is to prevent the battle cat from seizing on him during the target acquisition phase. He holds a one pound bag of catnip in his left hand should the battle cat become confused about who is the enemy prior to launch.
Incidently the proximity of a Schlachtkatzenwerfer probably explains the attire of the four German soldiers in the prior picture
I thought that unit was developed by rebellious Austrians in response to the dreaded Maus AFV in the hope that they would be treated by the Allies as reluctant partners in the Reich.

Pretty much everything in the 'today' photo is almost certainly post-war. That area was hit by the Luftwaffe in November 1940.

IMHO this isn't a combat picture, it's staged. Unless a) the Panther has it's main armament pointed at moles, b) the bazooka team is very confident there are no German infantry around and c) they're using smokeless rockets.

Reminds of Adm. Woodwards order to HMS Alacrity to go check Falkland Sound for any Argentine presence (unspoken - you're most expendable and we don't have a minesweeper); apparently the Captain responded with "And would you like us to zigzag around a little, sir?" ...
Not the only Falklamds blunder...
https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2017/oct/15/revealed-full-story-behind-sinking-of-falklands-warship-hms-sheffield
>:(
Alacrity wasn't so much a blunder as deliberate, in a "the minesweepers can't Sail this far as we never thought we'd need them to, and you're a fifties hangover with no useful weapons or sensors or helicopters, and as such if you run into a mine we wont have to lose anyone crucial" :/
So, the officers directly responsible for losing Shieffield and her crew avoided courts martial and the evidence was covered up to promote a jubilant public relations image? It's like everything the centre and left said about Thatcher & co. at the time was true!

Yes, she got well stuck in - the Tim up Choiseul Sound was a spiffing lark, according to some. Might have been less so if the minesweeping end had been a little more successful in the worst way...

Weird
Yeah was looking it up in 1982/83 Fleets of the World while the additional posts came in. A later Amazon class frigate, fairly capable for its time.
Sadly not overly capable where it was needed - the comments on her usefulness from the Falklands were pretty scathing; she was incapable of Fleet, local or self air defense except for the Oerklins and hope! That said she did good service with NGFS & if there'd been anything worth an Exocet I'm sure Commander Craig & crew would have been right in there.
Damnit now I want to read One Hundred Days again, and I've got Kershaws "Tank Men", "2017 The war with Russia" and a Pern book on the go already :D
