I was looking at the newest post from Fred and his WWII project. He showed a great picture of his painting desk, and it looks a lot like mine. You can see the small square of space I have to paint in. I actually do all of the modeling and conversion work on the floor of my study!

Would enjoy seeing others painting area.

A similar situation - where to actually paint and model.

I have a custom built desk next to my 12x4 foot table so space is not a problem.

A gate-leg table, first piece of furniture my parents ever bought and also roughly the same age as me, doing service as a painting table, in my living room.
Hmmmm.....
After photos of neat painting areas, there is NOOOO chance of anyone having a look at mine. I face more than enough ridicule on a daily basis to invite more scorn to be heaped upon myself.....
You are sooooo far from alone, bro'.
Aw come on Grumpy! Can't be any worse than mine.
Loved seeing the others posted, and all have a very familiar look save one - lots of modeling stuff and little room to work!
Terry
Here's my work area and the "overflow" area aka dining table
Cheers
Ian
Not a chance.....Though I have got a little more room in the middle of the table, than some of you.....But then I don't have paints all over the top....Just dental tools, reference material and an awful load of crud.
That's just made me realise that there's another name I missed off the list of potential oiks, regarding the plasters I got sent. HE took a photo of my desk.....AHA!!

I dream of my own painting space!
The dining room table, after the girls are asleep, or my daughter's play desk if there is something I want to watch on the Idiot Lantern

Far too tidy!
Hear, hear.....And this man thinks he's a figure painter.....Not nearly chaotic enough !! ;) ;)
Oh...how I wish my 'work space' had some sort of semblance of order.....Instead of being such a frigging mess.
Cheers - Kaptain Kaos.
So I should have left the dead cat being feasted on by giant hairy spiders then, after two weeks I was getting used to it and it gave me something to stick my brushes in. :D
I drag stuff like that out of range of the photo.
Can't finda 'full effect' photo at the mo', so here's the immediate area used.

How come there's no paint on that cutting mat?
That is absolutely disgusting.....It's so neat and clean. ;)
Cheers - Phil
Poser, none of that stuff's used :P
As my painting area started this, here's a photo in situ

I'm quite surprised at how similar most peoples painting areas are, from the ubiquitous green cutting mats, to the fairly neat paints, to the piles of in progress stuff, meaning there is a tiny area to work on.
On Jims, I like that he has the gaming table spotlessly clean, but over on the painting table its full up to the edge!
Roy, I notice you have a sketch pad on your rather neat and clean work area. I don't keep a sketch pad (cause I can't draw), but I do keep a small note pad where I document colors and brands I use in painting figures and basing. Works as a valuable tool for me as I can never remember for sure which brown I used or which tan, or..... You can see it between my paint brushes and the little tool box on the right side of the table.
Terry
That's more like it Fred.

Yes, I have such, too. The notepad shown in the photo was just a rough sketch of a Star Trek Enterprise -era spacesuit and phaser pistol, to remind me what needed to be sculpted onto the stock miniature.
The cutting mat in the photo is clean as it is near-new and only used when I'm practising to sculpt/converting. It being easier to work, for me, without the clutter and paint splashes since I'm using my full concentration on the job at hand. When painting, since I've a fair idea of what I'm doing, an old cutting mat is used and the area is messy. I own four cutting mats - I use them to immediately paint on (easy to mop up spills and wash down with water), to photo against as the green base and background helps to show the figures easier, new mats are used when constructing Col. Bill's display stuff or converting so I can see what is what without the distraction of mess.
One thing I don't have is a computer or TV in the same room as where I work. A computer would be useful for reference photos, but I'd hate to spill something on it and break it. TV would be a annoyance as I generally like total silence when working - I may have the radio on, depending on how the mood takes me.
I shall take a true photo of my painting area, to absolve my good name!
Happy now?! :P

Things included in the photo that were bought from Pendraken or Minibits:
1) tubs of talus grit for basing
2) ACW flag sheets
3) ACW figures
4) MDF bases
5) trees
6) Vallejo paints (most have been distilled into empty, small jam jars)
7) figures for VBCW
8*) Colonel Bill's items, that were cast by Pendraken
That's a bit more like it, Roy ! ;)
Cheers - Phil
I need music of my choice otherwise I'd go crackers - Sonos at the other end of the room.

strategic cropping of the photo has hidden the cluttered mess. plus I only took a photo of one corner of the attic room - if you saw the other 3 I'd be ashamed to show my face again :-[
generally, though, the painting area is clutter-less ... as all the crap gets pushed to the other areas of the room!
You should see the floor in what I laughingly call the 'work room'. X_X X_X X_X X_X

I've thought of annotating the paint splotches on my cutting pad and paint surface...and dating the blood splotches. :D
I do keep note books,Moleskine, because who could remember all of this stuff?

Luddite, I use a Powerpoint clone.
:)
Can you imagine what would happen if I got my iPad anywhere near my painting desk? :o
Besides I can paint a color watch on the thick Moleskine page!
It's neat atm... ??? won't stay like that for long

That is an impressive area, Tarty, almost clinical! I mean that as a complement.

I have a small, similar area in the garage for my man tools, hopefully someday I'll bring it all together in one man cave.
Here's mine, much neater than usual.

I am really enjoying this thread and seeing how others ares set up for having fun in our hobby.
However, FJ, your area just will not do, as it is entirely too neat and organized! :) Were I so lucky!!! I do have my paints, and I have a lot of them because I'm a sucker for a new color, sort of organized, but I'm planning to revamp it due to so many new colors.
Terry
Enjoying the thread also. FJ's is indeed neat (along with Tarty's). In fact FJ's painting projects are also exceedingly well organized. I have had figures on sticks and primed that have disappeared into the mire.
The other thing I've noticed is that some (Terry, Leman and I think Fred) dip the tip of the Vallejo bottle tops into the paint so you can find stuff when it in eight deep ranks. This seems an obvious thing to do but never occurred to me.
Thought I would join in on this. So I consider myself very fortunate as my wife is a wood working genius. At the moment I am overseas for a year. While I have been gone for the past two and a half months, she decided to re-build my painting area in the basement. I will see it for the first time when I go back on leave in 3 weeks. Thought I would share. OH the shelving, ceiling and new lights and paint rack was all done by her not some tradey.
so here are some pics over the next couple of posts.
And a close up of one of the two paint racks, well 3, I also have one out near my airbrush booth.
That box is a new style record player, as I like to listen to my old records when I paint.
Okay, I'm very very jealous!
Awesome!
Whilst my other half is a wizz at DIY, her opinion of my hobby pursuits is such I'd probably just get a box made and everything locked inside it ;)
;D @toxicpixie Yes well I have been warned if I make a mess of it she will start hiding things on me!
It's when makes a partition, "forgets" the door and leaves you behind it you need to worry ;)

Very nice setup!
I like the idea of being able to spin round in the office chair, inspect the racks of paints, spin again and paint.
I suspect I would soon end up with the contents of the racks on the desk. Or dizzy :P
So the paints are organised by brand and colour sets, blues, greens, reds, browns etc. I have a small round swivel 'thing' on my desk. So I grab half a dozen that I need and put them on the little swiveller that also has my brushes and I am good to go for what I am doing. Then just change em out when I am finished for a new set.
What does 'charge them out when I am finished' mean?
As an example if I am doing jackets/coats for French Nap line. I will have the colours on my desk, the swivel thingy. Once there done I put them away and grab the next set of colours for the next piece, trousers for example, so I change them out, old set for the new set.
Right ho, it's a style of production line.
