Title: Gods
Post by: fsn on 05 June 2017, 09:15:28 PM
What ho, fellow members of the Forum! How are we all?

For a while now, I've been wanting to get some gods and lady gods for my Ancient Greeks. My rule set allows for the gods to intervene and so give temporary a bonus to a unit/hero.

Anyway, for a while, I've wanted to have some figures to represent these deities, and I've splashed out on SHQ's offerings.

So, gentle readers, how do I paint them? OK, they're devilishly (no pun intended) big compared to the Pendraken figures, but ... how do I make them "godly"? As supernatural beings, i feel they should look somehow ethereal. I contemplated making the like marble statues - but Greek statues would be brightly coloured, so that doesn't fit. I contemplated giving them lustrous skin, but aside from dropping bronze paint into the flesh tones, I'm not sure how to do that.

Any thoughts?

I'm afraid the assorted deities I had for my HotT Fantasy Greek armies were simply painted as oversized humans.

Zeus, Poseidon, Ares and "That Bint With The Bird" aka Athena with her owl.

At the moment I am all fine. Thanks for asking.

It is an interesting question that you pose. My on again - off again Trojan War project requires gods.
They are inseparable from the story and have to be figured in. Consequently, I've spent time thinking about how they should be painted.
After getting some 25mm figures I decided to go one of a couple other ways but since you already have the figures I wont't ramble on about the other methods.

The best I could come up with was to paint each in a limited range of a single color. For example Ares in primary red but with washes of darker reds - and dry brushing with lighter metallic reds.  The conceit here is that this would reflect the recurring epithets Homer applied to the main characters (mortal and divine). Rather like modern hashtags - Hector #mankilling, Hera #whitearmed, or, in our example, Ares #manbane.

Ithoriel has mentioned a rich source of ideas in the HoTT arena. Terry37 has been helping me get into Hott and I've created a few experimental armies - one was a souped up army of Montrose that had A 25mm Alisdair MacColla as a "god". He was painted midnight black
and then drybrushed (upward strokes) in pale yellow to attempt to show illumination by a lightning stroke from below - the result fell well short of my imagination - but I like the very limited color pallet. I think I posted the thing somewhere on this forum.

Of course you could paint with UV paints and then  illuminate with black light  :)

I have, I think, about every rules set and boardgame for the Trojan War but still not happy. I know that you write a lot of your own rules. Is that the case here or have you found a set that works?

OK, I'm intrigued - what are the "other ways" you thought of?

Also, like the idea of limiting the palette with a dry brush of metallic. Think that's something I was groping towards.

Everything I do is my own rules.  :D

The stautes of Zeus at Appolonia and Athena in Athens (one was a wonder of the world) were ivory skinned, with gold robes. Think 'Clash of The Titans' and Other Ray Harrihausen films!
The richer you were, the less work you did outside I guess!

Personally I'd just paint them as people, Isn't that how they generally appeared to humans in the stories?  Add a bit of cotton wool round the base for clouds if you must. I think the scale difference will make the point for you.

You might search the Osprey game "Of Gods and Mortals" online for battle reports.  It's a skirmish game, but I remember you did have a God as part of your force.  So you might find some images of other peoples armies for ideas.  I remember one particularly impressive one with 28mm greeks and a 40mm Artemis (the mostly naked Hasslefree Miniature with spear and hoplon) .  Northstar miniatures actually made Gods for the game, but I think they are 45mm so would be gigantic next to a 10mm figure.  Just some thoughts.

Everything I do is my own rules.  :D

1. I though to represent them as the creature forms that they sometimes took - Zeus, for example, was an accomplished shape-shifter.. Probably use 15mm or 25mm depending on the creature. I was thinking to pick creatures I liked rather than being constrained by the mythological canon. Maybe a nice vicious bat for Ares.
2. But this is what I really would like to do - cut silhouettes out of transparent sheet acrylic. Something like this:

3D printing would probably be the way to go  - unlikely that I'll buy the equipment. So, unless I can contract it out I'll probably end up with badgers and birds.

SV52 probably describes the most rational way to do it, however.

If you ever have an inkling to share your rules, I would be interested. They could be passed through Techno or Leon to maintain your anonymity.  :)

BTW - my cartoonish MacColla as either a HoTT aerial hero or god:

That's a good suggestion too. I've got "Of Gods and Mortals" (and the Trojan War supplement) in my collection but have never played.
If you are using it, care to give a quick take on the interaction between the gods and the mortals?

Sorry d_Guy, I'm not actually playing it or even own the rules.  When it was first being released I was "on the fence" so I read game reviews and watched the initial excitement that generally follows one of the Osprey game releases.  The whole "Clash of the Titans" aspect of it really appeals to me.  Maybe in the future, but right now I have too many projects!! [I apologize to anyone offended by this statement of "to many projects" in regards to miniature gaming!  ;) ]

I'd agree with the limited but thematic pallete suggested by d_Guy, but also add a suggestion of a glittery glaze, rather than a drybrush.

This discussion reminds me of a joke -

One night the Norse god Thor was feeling a bit horny so he decided to   come down to earth to satisfy his needs.
He picked up a good looking woman with a great shape and they went to her apartment she only had one small problem, she had a speech
impediment, but this didn't affect their sex. They went at it hot and heavy all night long.

In the morning Thor had to leave so he decided he should at least tell her his name,
so he said to her, "I'm Mighty Thor and I have to leave now."

She looked at him and said, "You're thore I'm tho, thore I can hardly pith.

I'll get my own coat !
