Title: Any plans for rules videos?
Post by: KeithS on 03 May 2017, 01:43:08 PM
I realise that it is a busy time for Pendraken, what with sorting out the queries about the BKC III rules but I was wondering if there are any plans to produce some rules videos either by Pendraken themselves or by someone, e.g. a play tester with a good grasp of the rules.  Such a set of videos might help clarify potential misunderstandings as to whether apparent anomalies are a specific design decision or actual errors on the rule book.  Additionally they would probably be a great help to those of us who are new to the BKC system.

I would second KeithS's suggestion. One picture is worth a thousand words, one video is worth if not a thousand pictures, a few dozen.

Hi guys,
I think this is a really good suggestion. I often watch rules videos just to get a feel for what people are talking about in a game or period I will never play.

This seemed like a reasonable place to post a link to a BKC3 Intro video at Boardgamegeek. It is brief but did help me understand the basic mechanics:

Indeed, I have watched the into video and got a good deal from it, more so after a read through of the rules and a second watch of the video.  So a good start, what I would really like to see now is a set of videos that takes each aspect of the rules e.g. terrain, phases, command, movement, visibility, firing, close combat, army building etc. and breaks them down into how each works using examples.  The sort of thing that I am thinking of can be seen in the 'Harsh Rules' videos, although they are aimed at much simpler board wargames I think that they are excellent examples of clear exposition of rules systems as can be seen here in a video on a WW2 board wargame.

This is definitely something we'd like to do as well, but we lack the expertise here at Pendraken HQ.  We can do them on cameraphones and the like, but the editing and making it look good is a new skill to be learnt.  Once we've got the rules sorted out we'll be looking to hire some people to work with us on these videos.

That's my intro video. My plan was to make a series of shorter (5-8 min) vids covering each aspect. I was somewhat deflated with all the chatter here.

My plan was to make them after a couple test games and after a big con in the middle of this month. Probably late May/EarlyJune.

But I look forward to others' vids.

BTW, I made a few videos for BKCII - I learned since then to make shorter vids for training purposes.

Thanks, as I say it was most helpful, I hope that you don't get too deflated/discouraged I think that any further shorter videos that you produce will also be useful. :-bd

I want to wait and see where this settles and then I can confidently film some more.  It's awesome that Leon and team want to hire pros. They can make sure the rules are correct, whereas my grasp of the rules is suspect.
