I find it really difficult to get good, bright effects in details over a black undercoat. Right now I want red edges to the main black structure in my Qin chariots, but it looks as if I'll have to paint the lighter bits four times at least. Am I missing an important skill in my brushmanship?
Paint them over in white first.
I mostly use white undercoat. Problem solved.
yep, white undercoat, but as you've already undercoated in black paint the bits you want red brown first.
Most of my stuff is primed black and then dry brushed in white or light grey, often I need a second coat of dry brushing. I suppose using a high pigment white foundation paint would be the best to use.
I recently primed confederates in grey and then washed them generously with dark tone. And then just did everything as highlights.
I also recently primed in white, washed with dark tone and afterwards wished I had primed in black - but the subjects did have chain mail armour and black is better for that anyway,
Chain mail being...?
That chain stuff, as opposed to plate mail.

Chain mail being...?
That letter you get from a "friend" who wants you to copy it and then send to ten of your other "friends"
Horrible things are suppose to happen if you don't do this.
I first overpaint the sections I want bright in white.
I have gone back to a black undercoat after a few failed experiments with others. I don't have a problem with red on black or maybe I just have a decent red but if I do I either use a darker red or brown for a base then paint the proper colour on the top. At least using brown you can get away with saying it is shading, white showing through is a bit more difficult to explain.

Chain mail being...?
The widely accepted and correct neologism for "maille", first coined in 1822 by Sir Walter Scott.
To help with your confusion, it is this stuff:

Is that the one that's basically two saucepan lids and a chainmail bikini bottom?
Sounds a tad uncomfy.
Yes, well any kind of white metal armour goes best over a black undercoat, I find.
Not so sure about bronze armour. :-
Probably a green undercoat :D.

Mine too , but they can be Bl**dy expensive to keep and even more expensive to get rid of !!!!
I now use a white primer, but then apply a black wash. Bright highlights, dark shadows. Best of both worlds...
