Thanks to oldsmokie over at the BKC forum I have some AWI figures to test my painting on. I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed painting these, evidenced by the fact I only got them on Saturday. We're looking at AWI as next years project, probably for British Grenadier rules although we won't buy anything until the ruleset is agreed on! (lesson learnt from last project!)
These are based on a 40x40 base, which is to replace a 4 figure base in the 28mm original. Not sure about the basing over much. Size wise it looks good, but are the files too close together? Also not too sure about the grass(es). Thoughts?

Thats fantastic work, I to have just started on Pendraken 10mm AWI and the figures are superb, From what I gather, there are two types of 10mm, up scaled 6mm, which I think OG fits into, then down scaled 15mm, which the pendraken AWI range fits into, infact these figures are better then most 15mm figures you can get.
They got more detailes then most 15mm, better anotomy, and you get british in campaign dress.
I've painted two units today, (minus the command)
I'll post pics tomorrow in daylight and with baseing
They look great Gav - I think the Silfor tufts would benefit from a surround of static grass: at the moment they seem to be popping from nowhere [if that makes sense...]
Very nice Gavin =D> , one of the gits is very impressed =O

or even just a little more static grass, that may overcome Nik's worries :)
Cracking stuff Gavin !!!
I approve!
Amazing, love the facial details and expressions. =D>
Cheers,
Aart
Very nice indeed, I warn you, you will get hooked on these little fellows :D
Outstanding Gavin.
Got these British test figures painted up yesterday but couldn't take any decent pics till today.

More happy with the basing on these ones. I think the comments about the tufts being isolated were spot on. What I've done is used the two tone 4mm tufts as the focal point, and used the 2mm smaller tufts to add a bit more body to the foliage. I've also used a little more of the normal static grass.
Thanks for the comments by the way.
Good job ;)
Very nice job GavinP!
Please tell us, do you use any wash technique? At what stage?
Your shadows in the recesses are what I would like to achieve.
Thanks in advance.
Zbigniew
Zbigniew, no, there's no washes at all on these figures. I do use washes on some figures but tend to use them more on the larger scales. These are just black undercoat, then either block paint (in the case of the red) or shade and highlight (flesh and the breeches for examples). I try to leave a delineating line of black between colours and then just paint neat.
Gavin - what Red(s) do you use ?
On this particular exercise I just used vallejo Red. I can get the precise number tonight, but I think it's one without a description , just "Red". I would normally have used some highlights or shading but red can be a bit tricky and I actually felt they didn't need it fortunately!
i'd be interested in the number Gavin - i've got about 6 Vallejo reds and i keep changing my mind on which one i prefer! You seem to have got a really consistent deep colour - is that just one coat over black ?
Yes, although I did apply it quite thickly and probably counts as 2 coats in some areas where the coverage wasn't great.
I'll look out the number tonight when I get home.
It's 947 - Bermellón Red. What the hell Bermellón is I don't know ;D but it's a nice red.

Very nice figures indeed, I bet they stand out well on the table, some very nice individual figures on some of the bases.
Keep up the great work, I look forward to seeing more images posted in the future
thats what I like :) great shading on faces :)
