Got my hands on the "one hour wargames" book recently, and i am in the process of reading through it. While i was looking at the scenarios, i got the idea to make a board that would allow me to set up one of the scenarios very quickly. My standard stuff consists of felt roads and rivers and a fleece throw, but i rally wanted something i can just put down and start playing, to keep in the spirit of the rules.
The size would allow me to play song of blades and heroes on the tiles too, so that was a big plus for me.
i made 10 sections with one side being plain green and the reverse side having a section of road, river, river crossing or intersection. With a little bit of planning, i was able to draw out everything needed to make a map for almost every scenario in the book. (except scenario 10 wich has a road going diagonally over the board)
Size of the tiles is 14" x 13,5" so that means the table is 6" deeper and 4,5" wider than needed, but i didn't want to start cutting up the tiles, so i left it like that. The extra surface means i can use them for games of LOTR strategy battle game too.

Only problem i have, as you can see in the upper left corner in the above picture, is that the river banks make the tile slightly higher when turned around. But i'll be laying them on a much softer surface when playing, so i think this won't be noticeable. They'll sink in the fleece a little bit.
It's hard to see in the pictures, but the rivers are not painted on, but cut into the tiles.

Pretty happy with how they turned out, especially since i only started working on them yesterday 9 pm :D :D :D
I must add that the roads look a bit too big for my 10 mm, but I made them wide enough for my 28 mm nappies. They are about 60mm wide, so can just fit one of my cavalry bases
Interesting idea, Peter. Like the way you did the rivers.
good idea. what material for the tiles and any precautions needed to stop warping?
Looks a promising idea, Peter.
Cheers - Phil
Nice one Peter
Those look very nice Peter.
I did something very similar in a flurry of activity just after christmas, only I made some tiles (out of cork) for playing either One Hour Wargames or Tanks in 6mm scale, converting inches to centimetres. Never got around to making my rivers, but I did the hills & woodlands that I needed.
However, I'm still waiting for my order from Heroics & Ros to turn up, so attention has drifted onto something else . . .
Cheers, Martyn

I got the tiles from the garbage at work, very hard corrugated cardboard (double wall sort). It is used especially for packing fragile parts so can really take a hit and come out unscathed.
They warped when i painted the first side, but just warped back to straight pieces when i painted the opposite side :D :D :D
Then i put them all on top of each other and put a few heavy boxes on them to keep them like that. Just because the outside layer is dry doesn't mean everything is dry. So best to keep them weighted for a while to keep them straigth

I was going to use cork, vinyl or foam tiles at first, but when i saw these lying at work, i thought i might as well give them a try. If it didn't work out, no problem, they were free and the paint is just inexpensive craft paint. Glad i gave it a go!
I have enough lying around to play on these, no waiting for anything :D :D :D

The river itself is acctually just blue craft paper glued in the river bedding, with a white drybrush, quick and easy!!!
Looks good
Take care
Andy
Great idea, they look very nice :-bd
They look great and could even see use in Middle Earth?
I think they will see use as many different places :D
Great !
A very clever idea to make them double sided and with enough combinations to cover nearly all of the scenarios 8).

Looking at making a force for them right now. Thinking about generic units but can't decide which period!
I like them :-bd
