The third echelon of my 1914 stuff arrived safely from Pendraken HQ today....great timing Leon - I'm an year older today <:-P <:-P .....before anyone asks I'm 21 plus quite a bit of experience.... and hopefully a little bit wiser!! :-
Paul has kindly agreed to paint them for me once again.
So whats in the box this time? A fairly small reinforcement which concludes my 1914 purchases for now:
A further German 3 Battalion Infantry Regiment plus HQ's and a British Highland battalion in Glengarries plus an HQ and a couple of those nice new British GS wagons to ensure enough of the "water of life" makes it through to the Scots lads, who will be portrayed as either Black Watch or Gorgon Highlanders (Still looking for the tartan paint for Paul though ;) )
Planning on using them in bigger ITLSU games based around the actions at Elouges and Villers-Cotterets during the 1914 retreat - which has been my stated objective since I first started in 10mm in mid 2014. :-bd
Hoppy beer date!
Happy birthday, Shy! <:-P

Well spotted that man!! I should post BEFORE commencing celebrations ;)
Make that Gordon Highlanders.....no plans for HoTT at the moment (but now you mention it I do have a copy somewhere ;) ). Wierd war one - don't even think about it.
Love to come to Scotland again.......there's $17million in the Lotto draw tonight......am I feeling lucky? well I hope I can throw higher than one on the dice at tonight's Napoleonic game, but odds on that is the limits of my luck.
I like the Gorgon Highlanders with their amazing snake-like braids and their stoney glare.
Well the $17million prize was claimed last night by someon in Otago (a long way south of here).
I did manage to throw some decent rolls last night, the 7th French Hussars seeing off the 2nd KGL Hussars.
Our few Guard units suffered a bit though, the newly painted up Dutch 3rd Grenadiers are getting a real baptism under fire and our Guard Artillery battery was finally destroyed, much to the delight of the British players, after several turns of fire from multiple British batteries :(
WW1 stuff delivered to Paul so over to him in due course.
You forgot to mention the 2nd KGL Hussars left their standard with those damn French Hussars :o :o
You'll be please to know the first batch from your delivery has been prepared, washed and undercoated :)
The codes involved all begin with SCNNML ;) ;D

Maybe I was being modest - I did say I rolled a lot better last night :)
The SCNNML's include the "infamous" geese to finish off your DBA Crusaders I presume.
The entree before the main course?
I have started on my own small Pendraken Zoo project today too that came with the WW1 stuff - cleaned up and based 10 bases of sheep and cattle ready for undercoating.
Belated Happy Birthday, Peter !

I've sorted the first batch of WWI - a German Infantry Regiment
Finished painting and basing up my little Pendraken Zoo project tonight.......10 bases of sheep and cattle - just need a quick spray with some matt varnish tomorrow morning before work to complete.
Delivered 3 Feb and completed 7 Feb.....must be a record for me :o ;)
Reasonably happy with how the wash and drybrush look came out, even if I do say so myself as I am a very average painter.
Okay, not a uniformed wargaming unit but they are now ready, progress!! :-bd
You bet me Peter, my animals will hopefully be based tonight ;)
Not a race Paul, but as this is a painting blog and as I have a bit of time today here is a picture of my completed stuff:
The cattle are meant to broadly represent highland breeds (OK I didn't add horns) for future C17 games with Montrose, MacColla and their merry men, though they can be used for other eras equally well. A quick Google search turned up the solid colours that I used, though my daughter asked me why the cows weren't "spotted" black and white ;)
Looking good
Take care
Andy
:-bd =D> :-bd
My research turned up very similar colours :)
Based on my limited research spotted or belted cows only arrived in the US from about the 1830s ;)
Nice Peter. And also concur on the cow coats. Black, brown and brindle (although I was in a hurry and used some plastic N scale Holsteins for a couple of my Irish ventures - now repainted). You have probably got this link already but it was in one of my reasearch folders:
http://www.bovinebazaar.com/history.htm
Traces origins of many breeds and although brief - it is useful.
Excited about even more folks interested in Montrose in 10mm
PS now looking at 17th West Country sheep :)
Glad people like them - I am pleased how the turned out.
A case of great minds thinking alike about the cattle colours? ;)
Looking at doing Montrose next year DGuy as I have a lot of other stuff to finish first and the gaming budget for 2017 is already committed (Going to have a LOT of ships to paint soon ;) )
I have bought a PDF copy of Baroque and will be trying a few solo test games over the coming days with some "base units" to understand how they work. I think my gaming group will take to them as Baroque seems to have a fair degree of commonality with V&B and the DBA/M rules series which we use (e.g. I stand = 1/2 or a full "battalion" and they use base widths for movement distances and combats are resolved without using too many different dice).
On to basing more WW1 Artillery, HQ's and support units.
No baa-d thing!
I think all the cows I was standing next to, in the field, when I was comparing how tall these particular ones were, compared to my 6 foot height, were black....I couldn't tell you what breed they were, though....except they were beef cattle.
There were a couple that were quite happy for me to stand right next to them, which made comparing the relative sizes very easy.
I could almost describe them as nosy bastards. You could almost feel the thought processes......"What's this odd two legged thing wandering around with us ?.....Let's go and investigate "
What I would NEVER do, is go into a field where there were cows with young calves.......They almost always get extremely protective of their young.....and I wouldn't fancy getting trampled by half a dozen of those !.....I think I'd get end up as a flattened, bloody smear in the mud. (And dead)
I also wouldn't go in a field with a mature bull either !!
I think you've done a cracking job on those, Peter.
Cheers - Phil
It's moo sic to my ears.
Moo-zart?
Stop milking it boys, your calf-ing a laugh!

Very nice. Love the color for the overcoats. please tell me what you used for them?
Thanks,

The Germans are base coated Vallejo 70.920 German Uniform
Dry brushed with one of 972 Light Green Blue, 905 Blue Grey Pale, 991 Dark Sea Grey
Washed with dilute Tamiya X-19 Smoke
A final light dry brush with 70986 Deck Tan
British base coated :)
Second German Infantry Regiment collected off Paul....Tonight I painted and cut out 54 bases and made up labels for the regiment.....
Tomorrow start basing up figures......progress :o :-bd
Very impressive progress.
Based up all three battalions and two Regimental HQ's plus (already have the MG companies done).
Mainly for looks, I have added battalion and regimental colours to each HQ stand, though there are clear examples of German regiments marching into Belgium with uncased colours at the very beginning of the conflict.
I have not chosen any specific units to depict but I have used flags from Pendraken's PNFL 71 Franco-Prussian flag sheet. I just used PVA to glue the flags in place and then"crease" them before the glue sets to make it look like they are flapping in the wind. Once dry I painted the edges the appropriate colours to complete the look. Quite pleased with the overall effect as the HQ's standout a bit amongst the masses of Feldgrau :)
Now just need to flock 60 odd bases and then add labels.
I will take some pics once completed.
I need to crack on with the British batch then :!! :!! :!!
Good progress on the horses :)
Khaki drybrushed :)
OR Boots & Glengarry done :)
Tartan experiments begun :-SS
Tip for tartan : Paint the base colour and add the lightest strips, don't try for the full set. It gives the right impression. On 6mm stuff I don't even try for the stripes, you will only see the base colour. Also most military sets are dark green or dark blue base (AKA Black Watch).
IanS
Flocked HQ's & first battalion and did labels for the Regimental MG Company to check look of completed company before doing the rest of the regiment.
Happy so will proceed with the rest when time permits.
Tartan experiments finished #:-S
Found a combination of blue base and green stripes I am happy with on the sixth attempt :)
All tartan now painted :) :)
Photos? Tutorial?
Kilts have alsways scared the bejezus out of me.
Probably an accidental meeting with a Gordon Highlander whilst we were both slightly drunk.
However, I would like to see how others have painted them. I quite fancy some Highlanders for the Nap Brits, but the kilts put me off.
I'll do some pics when the figures are finished
I followed the advice from others on the forum and did a blue base coat and green stripes. I ended up doing just vertical stripes as there wasn't really room to do even one horizontal stripe
The experiments were finding the colour combinations that worked with the jacket colour, I settled for Vallejo 70.965 Prussian Blue and Vallejo 924 Russian Uniform WWII
Most of the details now done :)
Skin to do :!!
Paul kindly showed me the partially completed highlanders last night.....very impressed ;)
I had hoped to finish basing the Germans that I have today but been diverted with more pressing "real world" issues.
Also learnt (yet again) that the life of a scenario designer is not straightforward....just cause you design it doesn't mean it will turn out how you think it might despite added checks and balances....the German Navy suffered a quite heavy defeat at the hands of the Russian Navy off Gotland in our WW1 naval game last night.....though I'm sure Paul and Roy our host had a wonderful time ;)
Finally finished my second German 1914 Infantry Regiment so here are some pics....95% of any quedos should go to Paul R who painted the figures for me...great job as usual :)
The Regiment based for ITLSU. It consists of Regimental HQ, 3 Battalions each of 4 companies of 4 stands plus the separate Regimental level MG company with 3 MG08 stands.
One of the Battalions - To differentiate this Regiment from the other I used GP 24 Infantry in picklehaube, greatcoat for all the infantry stands.
Battalion HQ - I decided to add flags as some German Infantry are recorded as using uncased colours very early in the war.
13th (MG) Company
(https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4250/34762885475_3527bfab62_z.jpg)
The three coloured squares are Regiment/Battalion/Company indentifiers.
I have this afternoon finally been able to give them a coat of matt laquor so they are now ready to field in our refight of the Action at Elouges which we will be playing at Call to Arms, the local convention here in Wellington on 5 - 6 August.
Overall very pleased how the have turned out ;)
Very good looking Pierre (an Paul)! Nice to see them all done up. The flags are a nice touch - a nod to the passing of the old world. Are the flags printed or painted?
Very nice work chaps.
Impressive - both the look of the individual figures, and the mass of the whole Regiment.
It's interesting to see that the ITLSU force, is remarkably similar to a GWSH force, even though GWSH is a step up in representive scale, with each stand representing a company.
Makes me want to get back to my WWI - too many projects!!
Very nice indeed !
Cheers - Phil
Very impressive looking array.
Thanks for all the comments.
D Guy - I used flags from Pendraken's PNFL 71 Franco-Prussian flag sheet. I used PVA to glue the flags in place and then"crease" them before the glue sets to make it look like they are flapping in the wind. Once dry I painted the edges the appropriate colours to complete the look.
fred - while I have masses of 6mm Spearhead and Modern Spearhead armies I have never really been attracted to GWSH, not entirely sure why. Personally I love ITLSU, even it they are an older set of TFL's rules. With the fairly simple Divisional HQ level house rules we have come up with we can play quite large scale games, like the recent refight of 1st Gaza.
Very nice indeed
Take care
Andy

Those are stunningly good!
:-[ :)
I am rather pleased with the kilts ;)
Today is a slightly sad day. I have used an old fold down writing desk as my painting table for the last decade or more. It was bequeathed to my son by his maternal grandfather and we shared it when he lived at home. Since he moved to Christchurch I have been 'looking after it' for him until he found a way to get it down there. Today a colleague of his, who was driving what would have been an empty van down to Christchurch, collected the desk.
I have a good lead on a replacement so hopefully I will be back to painting soon :-SS :-w
I must say that this set of little guys is quite wonderful to look at! Nice work on the tartan which can certainly be a trial.
And horses - nice. I really like horses that other people paint :)
My favorite (beside the pipers) are the vickers MGs. The highlighting that suggests worn paints makes them.
Good luck in the pursuit of a new desk and may the powers that guide such thing make it perfectly level.
Really excellent work, Paul ! :-bd
Hope you find a suitable replacement desk, as soon as...
Cheers - Phil.
Nice work especially the kilts. Fingers crossed you get a writing desk replacement soon.
Just lovely

Andy
Great job on those highlanders! =D>
My replacement fold down writing desk arrived on Saturday :)
I got the chance to 'christen' it last night :) :) :)
Last batch of this echelon prepared, 17 various German cavalry for Peter to use as signallers etc
It is slightly smaller than my last desk and the pigeon holes are laid out differently which makes it feel a bit strange when using it, I'm sure I'll get used to it
I'm sure you will, Paul. :)
Cheers - Phil

I based and labelled the Highland battalion recently, turned out very well :) Currently going to work before the sun rises and getting home at sunset so not much chance to take pics yet I'm afraid.
Received the "small" scenery order I had made for various WW1 scenarios today too - very tightly packed box of goodies to prepare in time for Call to Arms in a few weeks. :-bd
Just hope the thermometer rises enough to allow paint to dry.....winter has really arrived here in NZ this week.
Winter is well and truly here, but a heater next to the painting table has encouraged progress
Figures are now painted and touch ups done :) :)

Final dry brush and figures bases to do
Finally got some decent weather to take some pics of the completed 1914 Highland battalion that PaulR painted for me recently. Only using a camera phone so hope they do justice to the subjects.
The battalion does not represent any particular regiment but the kilts are done in Black Watch tartan colours.

Fortunately the weather hasn't been as bad here as it has in the South Island and my son lives in a part of Christchurch that didn't have to be evacuated due to flooding #:-S
