Title: Boardgames
Post by: Luddite on 30 December 2016, 03:04:48 AM
Something a little different this time.  Boardgames!

I've actually been playing more boardgames than wargames for a while now - mostly due to opportunity.

PS I tried to post this on my blog thread but got the dreaded "hacking attempt" error...

Well that looked fun. Thanks for the quick play through.
I tend to play more boardgames then miniatures wargames also simply because I can get other people to play them with me. A combination of "toy soldiers" and apparently not sufficient abstraction in the realm of human death and destruction. Even straight Pandemic is a little too intense for my crew.  :)

I've visually given up going to the club evening because most people now seem to be boardgamers, which do not attract me in the least.

Does look fun.  :)

(Do you know.....Lud's 'avatar' has only just revealed itself to these old eyes,
I'd seen it as something completely different until today.)

Cheers - Phil

There's a strong board game contingent at our club. IMHO the line between the two is very blurred these days!

Phil, I have always seen it as the face of an Aztec eagle warrior. Is that what you are now seeing?

The WW2 skirmish game I've played most of this year has not been "Chain of Command" but "Heroes of Normandie."

There seem to be more and more board gamers in my life and fewer and fewer miniatures gamers. My kids and many of their friends are computer gamers, board gamers and CCG collectors so maybe that's the way the world is going.

Just a thought, but could it be that we don't see a decline in gamers but a decline in modellers?

Board games are proving more popular than ever!

I don,t complain though, I do both. I prefer wargames but sometimes time and space available are insufficient, and boardgames provide me with a faster alternative, mostly with a smaller footprint.

I play all forms of tabletop game.  FFG's X-Wing produced, certainly in my experience with the various groups i play with, the greatest shift in gaming for a long time.  Good quality pre-painted miniatures got boardgamers playing a miniatures game and wargamers playing a boardgame.

Very interesting...

Personally, modelling and painting has always been a necessary (and gruelling) chore to allow me to play wargames.  If someone ver cracks the "good quality pre-painted" miniatures nut, i'll never paint another miniature!   ;D

I have several friends who can't understand why I spend hours painting figures when I can just download Total War, Company of Heroes or whatever and have 3D, ready coloured, animated figures with a (limited) AI in a matter of minutes.

To be fair, I sometimes wonder about that myself! :D

X wing did strike a note with several 'kinds' of gamers. Personally i have about 30 ships, and enjoy the game very much. And about 50% of the enjoyment comes from the prepainted minis, wich are really well done!

To be honest i used to enjoy painting more than now, but that has something to do with the time i can spend on it i think. The more i just paint to get a good wargames standard, the more fun i start having again. I used to put much more time in it and never get anything done. And in the end the result is the same when you look at it on the table, so i'm moving back to simpler paintjobs and bigger outputs!

Well i have had some periods that i don't paint for months and just play games, but after a while i always think videogames limit me too much in what i can do with them and go back to painting and playing wargames  :D

No, Bill.  ;D  ;D ;D ;D

I used to see it as a small 'pseudo' Viking warrior' head....Two horns, at the side....one horn in the middle.....Helm....Cheek guards.....Small face....eye sockets, just underneath the rim of the helm.....Little beard and moustache.

NOW...I can see it as a pair of glasses (sunglasses ?) at the top of the image.....The 'horns' have become Lud's cheeks.....and there's a small moustache and beard, at the bottom of the image.

It's basically a face, chopped at the top and bottom of the image.

I may have to copy it and play with the colour renditions.

Cheers - Phil
