So chaps, with all the year reviews on the television and the radio kicking of, i thought it might be a fun idea to review our 'wargaming year' by answering a couple of questions.
1: best new rules/game you played?
2: worst new rules/game you played?
3: best purchase you did this year?
4: worst purchase you did this year?
5: most expensive purchase this year? And did you regret it?
6: game you played the most this year?
7: game you wish you had played more this year?
8: how many models did you paint (roughly)?
9:wich unused modeld/games did you sell/trade?
10: would you review your year as a good year of wargaming, or did you want more?
I'll fill in the questions myself in the first post!
1: best new rules/game you played?
Napoleonic wargaming (wich has been around for a while, but was new to me)
2: worst new rules/game you played?
a dice game, but i can't remember the name. something with atlantik wall
3: best purchase you did this year?
'The great war' boardgame, got it as an impulse buy and love it very much
4: worst purchase you did this year?
an acrylic painting kit that i found for cheap, needs 10 layers to cover anything up ;D ;D
5: most expensive purchase this year? And did you regret it?
275£ for painted napoleonic armies, but worth every pound so don't regret it!
6: game you played the most this year?
That will be a close call between blitzkrieg commander II and napoleonic wargaming
7: game you wish you had played more this year?
LOTR strategy battle game. The game that is still as fun as when i started playing about a week after it's first release.
8: how many models did you paint (roughly)?
Roughly 400 and a lot of scenery!
9:wich unused modeld/games did you sell/trade?
Nothing this year i'm afraid, been too busy with the little one and redecorating, so don't have much time to go back and forth to the post office.
10: would you review your year as a good year of wargaming, or did you want more?
I think i had a good year, with lots of painting time while the little one was napping, and some great games!

2: worst new rules/game you played? 40k 7th edition
3: best purchase you did this year? all Pendraken bits
4: worst purchase you did this year? I met to play FOW at Corrivalry, really didn't enjoy it.

6: game you played the most this year? FoGR
7: game you wish you had played more this year? Epic
8: how many models did you paint (roughly)? EXACTLY (if you have been following my Facebook this year) 2372 (well, 40 need their bases finished)!
9:wich unused modeld/games did you sell/trade? none, but did sell a couple of FOW armies that were well used
10: would you review your year as a good year of wargaming, or did you want more? yes and YES!
1: best new rules/game you played? - Way too many to count and all board or computer games.
2: worst new rules/game you played? - One Hour Wargames Napoleonic game arranged by a friend. No period feel, could have been landsknechts or ACW for all the difference it would have made.
3: best purchase you did this year? Leven Miniatures' recently released Ancient Middle East Buildings - have loads, want more!
4: worst purchase you did this year? "Boots On The Ground" boardgame. Not a bad game but not a period that grabs me. Played twice then put it away in a cupboard. Bought cheap so no complaints.
5: most expensive purchase this year? And did you regret it? "Mice and Mystics" Nope, not one bit!
6: game you played the most this year? "Age of War" dice game, Closely followed by "8 Minute Empires."
7: game you wish you had played more this year? All of them - even Boots On The Ground!!

9:wich unused models/games did you sell/trade? Eek! Sell/ give away my babies!!????

2: worst new rules/game you played?
a dice game, but i can't remember the name. something with atlantik wall
D-Day Dice ... I love that game!! To be fair I prefer to play entirely co-op rather than use Atlantik Wall but it gives the opportunity to add a further player or to satisfy those of my gaming friends who "don't do co-op!"

That's the one!
to be fair, really not into dice games, but played it as my gaming buddy wanted to try it.

4: worst purchase you did this year? "Boots On The Ground" boardgame. Not a bad game but not a period that grabs me. Played twice then put it away in a cupboard. Bought cheap so no complaints.
Blame the bugger who made you buy it ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;D ;D
Quote8: how many models did you paint (roughly)? EXACTLY (if you have been following my Facebook this year) 2372 (well, 40 need their bases finished)!
:o :o :o :o :o :o
That's a bunch!
In 2015, I probably played more games than in any previous year- but in late December 2015 I moved home into a major project and that has taken a full 12 months to break its back and so 2016 feels a bit like the wilderness years!
But anyway - here goes it.
1: best new rules/game you played? ( Well I am late to the party, but I have really enjoyed exploring the Back Powder rules from Warlord Games. I am not saying they are the best rules, but that simply they have given me a lot of pleasure this year. I have bought 7 sets of other rules over the same period).
2: worst new rules/game you played? ( Southern Flank( a boardgame) by Swedish Games Production, made in 1982. I remember, rather nostalgicly loving this game, so I paid over the odds to get a copy and on setting up, I was not keen on the system, particularly the air rules. I also had issues with some coastal hexes, which contained both coast and sea, sometimes to the slightest amount and it was difficult to define the hex as either land or sea and it made me question how I could have played this all those years ago without having the same questions. I played 1 turn and packed it away (now sold), so much for nostalgia
3: best purchase you did this year? ( The 28mm Black Powder WATERLOO starter set by Warlord Games - simply because it is a nice thing to own).
4: worst purchase you did this year? ( A subscription to Wargames Illustrated magazine - well it was a gift really, but I just don't get a cover-to-cover read from it like I do with other mags, as there seems to be too many articles that are history based with a small wargame section tagged on the end)
5: most expensive purchase this year? And did you regret it? ( two purchases come in pretty close to each other, one was the buying into the 3 new modules of Worthington Publishings Band of Brothers boardgames for WWII tactical and a load of 28mm terrain from The Last Valley. I regret neither.
6: game you played the most this year? ( repeat, repeat, repeat final play test playings of my own boardgame, on Stamford Bridge 1066 )
7: game you wish you had played more this year? ( My own free tactical WWII rules for hexes, as I wanted to create a late war east front module)
8: how many models did you paint (roughly)? ( 70 x 28mm painted from scratch and around 560 x 12mm Kallistra ACW were 'refurbished').
9: which unused modeld/games did you sell/trade? ( 20mm WWII collection - though it was relatively small )
10: would you review your year as a good year of wargaming, or did you want more? ( It was good from the point of view that my face-to-face gaming continued, mostly at Mikes and my blogging output was still good. I also had a ziplock boardgame published (Stamford Bridge 1066), but I was really limited to get games onto the table at home because it has felt like a builders site for the past year, also we did not get internet here until July, so that was 7 months of visiting coffee shops to do web and blog updates etc .... good for cake, but not appealing beyond that).

9: which unused modeld/games did you sell/trade? ( 20mm WWII collection - though it was relatively small )
Ha i remember seeing them on your site. To be honest, i think 10 mm fits better with your hex approach!
I'll stick to Wargames
1: best new rules/game you played?
Hmm...didn't play much "new" (or new to me) this year. I'll say Hail Caesar with L'Art de la Guerre a close second.
2: worst new rules/game you played?
Mortem et Gloriam. £50+ for an unfinished game that felt like it wasn't past alpha testing yet.
3: best purchase you did this year?
Wargame-wise, err...haven't bought much this year. Probably GW's Kill Team starter box set. Good value for a GW product.
4: worst purchase you did this year?
Mortem et Gloriam.
5: most expensive purchase this year? And did you regret it?
Single item, Mortem et Gloriam "special deal pack" thing just tops it. Regret? Yes.
6: game you played the most this year?
Difficult to say, its been a "bitty" couple of years. Probably a close tie between Warband, Black Powder and X-Wing.
7: game you wish you had played more this year?
Warband.
8: how many models did you paint (roughly)?
200-ish
9:wich unused modeld/games did you sell/trade?
None.
10: would you review your year as a good year of wargaming, or did you want more?
Not really. My wargaming for the last couple of years has been disjointed and disrupted. I've been playing more boardgames and roleplaying than wargames at the moment. I'm hoping my group's growing interest in L'Art de la Guerre will see a wargaming resurgence in 2017. That said, boardgames will continue to be a major feature for me in 2017. I play twice a week, and as my wife's a gamer too we are in a couple of groups.
1: best new rules/game you played? Black Ops, simple and fun
2: worst new rules/game you played? Not played anything this year I did not like
3: best purchase you did this year? 15mm Sassanid/Sassanian army, a fun little army to play with
4: worst purchase you did this year? Buying stain rather than varnish because I did not read the tin properly
5: most expensive purchase this year? And did you regret it? 15mm Sassanid/Sassanian army, not one bit :D
6: game you played the most this year? Pike & Shotte
7: game you wish you had played more this year? Lion Rampant
8: how many models did you paint (roughly)? 300ish
9: which unused model/games did you sell/trade? 15mm Ottoman Turks
10: would you review your year as a good year of wargaming, or did you want more? It was good, I made new friends to play with. A bit like being back in infant school 47 years ago :)
Cheers
Ian

So chaps, with all the year reviews on the television and the radio kicking of, i thought it might be a fun idea to review our 'wargaming year' by answering a couple of questions.
1: best new rules/game you played?
Rommel (next Sam Mustafa game).
2: worst new rules/game you played?
Can't really think of any bad rules I played.
3: best purchase you did this year?
Technically last year, but the War and Empire II kickstarter (funded last christmas, delivered this christmas). Loads of Aurelian-era Romans and Sassanid Persians.
4: worst purchase you did this year?
None. Happy with all my purchases.
5: most expensive purchase this year? And did you regret it?
A *lot* of 3mm O8 WW2 desert stuff (used for Rommel). No regrets!
6: game you played the most this year?
Probably a tie between Rommel and Bluecher, with Sword and Spear a close third.
7: game you wish you had played more this year?
See 6.
8: how many models did you paint (roughly)?
Hundreds, but a lot of those were 3mm, including infantry. Did quite a few 6mm too (again in the hundreds) and several dozen 10mm, and another couple of dozen 15mm.
9: which unused models/games did you sell/trade?
None.
10: would you review your year as a good year of wargaming, or did you want more?
Wanted more, but finishing off my dissertation took precedence.
See above for answers.
1: best new rules/game you played?
Soldiers of God
2: worst new rules/game you played?
Black powder Napoleonics. It was a fun game but did not seem to "feel" like napoleonics
3: best purchase you did this year?
Some 20mm Tanks from Nosher
4: worst purchase you did this year?
28mm Arab army for soldiers of god - just because ite loads to paint and I have not managed to do so
5: most expensive purchase this year? And did you regret it?
Tiny terrain Printed Mat £110. No.
6: game you played the most this year?
Difficult - I am a war-games slapper and will play anything. Probably Chain of Command
7: game you wish you had played more this year?
Big Chain Of Command
8: how many models did you paint (roughly)?
200+ 15mm Modern Africa
60+ 28mm Hobbits for Dragon Rampant
100 assorted 10mm
30 assorted 28mm
9:wich unused modeld/games did you sell/trade?
Sold about £600 of stuff on Evil bay - Main things were
Command and Colours Napoleonics and Russian army for it that I had unopened for about 4 years
Dystopian Wars Fleet - The new armies had ruined the game
10: would you review your year as a good year of wargaming, or did you want more?
Always want more games
A quieter time than usual for me, due to major house refurbishment. :o At least I managed to get to the Tring club on a reasonably regular basis. ;)
1: best new rules/game you played?
The Men Who Would Be Kings
2: worst new rules/game you played?
I didn't play a game I didn't like
3: best purchase you did this year?
The Men Who Would Be Kings, loving these rules, so flexible. With several people at the club putting together armies, I can see these getting a lot of use.
4: worst purchase you did this year?
Some 28mm mounted knights, because I needed them for my Crusader army, then I found the box of assorted 28mm medievals I picked up on Ebay just before the work started on the house. I put them in a "safe place" and forgot all about them.......... :-[
5: most expensive purchase this year? And did you regret it?
I didn't buy that much, so it was probably a 25mm Mongol army I picked up on the reading B&B for £40. They are older figures, but 72 nicely painted 25mm cavalry for 40 quid was a bargain, so no!
6: game you played the most this year?
It would have been between Soldiers of God and Lion Rampant, but I've already played more than a dozen games of The Men Who Would Be Kings since Novemeber, so that might have edged into first place.
7: game you wish you had played more this year?
All of them
8: how many models did you paint (roughly)?
Bugger all! :( Just about 30 28mm figures
9:which unused modeld/games did you sell/trade?
No opportunity this year, but I've a bit of a clear out in mind for 2017.
10: would you review your year as a good year of wargaming, or did you want more?
It was a reasonable year for playing, if not for painting. Now I have a semi-permanent gaming space at home I'm hoping 2017 will be better all round.
1: best new rules/game you played? Deadzone and Basic Impetus
2: worst new rules/game you played? None, I have enjoyed all the games I have played this year.
3: best purchase you did this year? Basic Impetus
4: worst purchase you did this year? Can't think of one.
5: most expensive purchase this year? And did you regret it? Possibly the 5e Dand D starter set, only because I am unlikely to get my current crop of gaming friends to play it.
6: game you played the most this year? 'Impetus' and 'To the Strongest'
7: game you wish you had played more this year? Basic Impetus (because it has only just come out). I would also like to try Swordpoint soon.
8: how many models did you paint (roughly)? 400-500 in all scales from 6mm to 28mm
9:which unused models/games did you sell/trade? a few unpainted 20mm plastics and Bolt Action

2: worst new rules/game you played?
Memoir 44 (it doesn't mean it's bad)

My big ACW order from Pendraken this summer, no
6: game you played the most this year?
First part of the year Battle cry, from September on Tide of Iron

I always want more but it was a good year

Sharp Practice 2
2: worst new rules/game you played?
Rapid Fire - not really new, but convinced myself to try them again and realised why I disliked them so much first time around
3: best purchase you did this year?
My 28mm terrain collection - Last Valley Hedgerows and trees and a boatload of 28mm Buildings from 4ground
4: worst purchase you did this year?

8: how many models did you paint (roughly)?

9:wich unused modeld/games did you sell/trade?
I had a real cull this year. Sold at least half of everything wargaming I own which funded my terrain collection, my shiny new Vespa and paid for Christmas and 50th Birthday presents for my good lady. Made almost £6000 in total.
10: would you review your year as a good year of wargaming, or did you want more?
A good year - more nights at the club for a start, but always keen for more
Best new rules - To the Strongest

Worst purchase - ITLSU
Most expensive purchase - Deep Cut squared mat
Game played the most this year - Field of Battle 2
Figures painted this year - 200 - 300
Sold off my 28mm Romans - they were never going to get painted in my lifetime
This was an excellent wargaming year, although I would like to have painted twice as many figures - had two big mojo periods. Only misfire was Itlsu which was happily corrected by the purchase of Contemptible Little Armies. Most enjoyable games played this year were BBB, HOW, TtS, Contemptible Little Armies, FOB2, Basic Impetus 2
Hopes for the future - more Square Bashing, Altar of Freedom, FPW and APW, TtS Italian Wars.
1: best new rules/game you played?
Muskets & Tomahawks; Dead Man's Hand; To the Strongest; X-Wing
2: worst new rules/game you played?
A very old school 1970s-style clunky ACW ruleset.

http://bloodybigbattles.blogspot.co.uk/
7: game you wish you had played more this year?
BBB of course! In particular, battles from the Hungarian War of Independence 1848-1849, and Konstantinos Travlos's magnificent series of scenarios for the Balkan Wars 1912-1913. Hopefully I will get to these in 2017.
8: how many models did you paint (roughly)?
Zero - these days time spent painting is time I could be either gaming or researching/writing scenarios.
9:which unused modeld/games did you sell/trade?
I gave away Duel.
10: would you review your year as a good year of wargaming, or did you want more?
An excellent year, the highlight being the inaugural BBB Bash Day convention back in April. We've got such a good group going that there are always games to be played and players around, so I get a game in most weeks. The Oxford Wargames Society is thriving. Come on down!

1: Best new rules/game you played?
Probably Sword & Soear and Sharp Practice II
2: Worst new rules/game you played?

None that I can think of.

Bloody Big Battles.
7: game you wish you had played more this year?
Blitzkreig Commander II.
8: How many models did you paint (roughly)?

9:Which unused models/games did you sell/trade?
Chain of Command and some 28mm scenery that I no longer have any need for.
10: Would you review your year as a good year of wargaming, or did you want more?
A good year but patchy on the gaming front due to the usual clash of work & family commitments limiting gaming time. I wish I had more time to paint, but the aforementioned issues kept cropping up.

9:Which unused models/games did you sell/trade?
What is this "sell" you speak of :-/
10: Would you review your year as a good year of wargaming, or did you want more?

What is this "sell" you speak of :-/
You know, you sell stuff that you said you were going to use but didn't, so you can buy stuff you say you will use but never will ;D ;D ;D
Cynical yet apt.
1: best new rules/game you played?
Whilst I've enjoyed the few miniatures games I've played, a computer game, Combat Mission: Battle for Normandy - 'Closing the Pocket' scenario was the most fun.

About 120 figures/items, mainly 15mm, the rest 10mm.
9: which unused models/games did you sell/trade?
None - but have been toying with selling all of my 6mm buildings (but should probably build up a collection 10mm buildings first)
10: would you review your year as a good year of wargaming, or did you want more?
Fairly satisfactory. Good start to the year. Visit to Vapnartak galvanised me into embarking on a 4 month painting (and re-basing) frenzy (well, by my standards). Visited Brandywine, Antietam and Gettysburg battlefields, Valley Forge, Philadelphia and Fort McHenry. Finished with a SYW painting spurt and 3 games of HoW in the last month of the year. Always want more.

So I have done an end of year post

Thanks to everyone here who makes this such a welcoming place.
Had to have a read through my own painting diary thread, so that I could remind myself what I had done this year, rather than previously. 8-} :O)
1: best new rules/game you played?
Irregular Wars (purchased), and our two sets of home brew rules for Fantasy and Sci Fi mass battles
2: worst new rules/game you played?
Fortunately there hasn't really been one
3: best purchase you did this year?
Close between a set of dirt roads from Fat Frank, and acrylic blast markers from Troll Trader. Both very handy for many games.
4: worst purchase you did this year?
Was probably bought last year, expected to be delivered this year, but still waiting. Reaper Bones III Kickstarter. Its taken so long to get them, that I'm not sure that I need a bunch of 28mm Fantasy figures. I'm sure they will be nice when thy arrive (fingers crossed).
5: most expensive purchase this year? And did you regret it?
From a checking of PayPal - Pendraken LoA. And Pendraken overall got lots of spend from me, even after getting lots of stuff from Competition wins too. Not regretting it, but a little daunted by the number of figures still to paint.
6: game you played the most this year?
Epic - in both original Epic Armageddon flavour, and the new reduced sugar mini epic.
7: game you wish you had played more this year?
Irregular Wars
8: how many models did you paint (roughly)?
Lots - several 100s, probably more 6mm than 10mm
9:wich unused modeld/games did you sell/trade?
Traded a few Pendraken Landsknechts, but not much escapes once I have it in my clutches!
10: would you review your year as a good year of wargaming, or did you want more?
Definitely good - finally got our home-brew fantasy rules into shape. Managed to create a set of Sci Fi rules in double quick time, and got to play lots of both. Would like to game more, but work keeps getting in the way.

2: worst new rules/game you played? N/A
3: best purchase you did this year? Painted figures by Kev 1964
4: worst purchase you did this year? A variety of ECW/17th century rule sets.
5: most expensive purchase this year? And did you regret it? Kev's painting. You have to be kidding. It is amazing!
6: game you played the most this year? To the Strongest. Both original and our developing ECW variant. Fun and instructive at the same time.
7: game you wish you had played more this year? Commands and Colors Ancients
8: how many models did you paint (roughly)? 100-150.
9:wich unused modeld/games did you sell/trade? None.

A stroke! Dear, oh dear! Hope you are on the mend and that eye-sight problem soon corrects itself. All the best for 2017.
Same wishes from me, as well, 'A'....Sorry :-[....Completely missed that, earlier !
Best wishes - Phil
All the best on your recovery from the stroke.

Played no new rules or games this year.
3: best purchase you did this year?

Bought nothing gaming related this year.

Not gaming related, but as another poster has done - an MG TF. And absolutely not.
6: game you played the most this year?
7: game you wish you had played more this year?
Again, don't think I've actually played anything this year.

None. The only modelling I did was to make a start on some terrain tiles, and also some card buildings for an Aliens-type sci-fi thing that ultimately ran out of steam.
9:which unused modeld/games did you sell/trade?
Sell?
10: would you review your year as a good year of wargaming, or did you want more?
Terrible, I did practically nothing this year at all. Hopefully next year will be better.
Cheers, Martyn

Absolutely - sounds bad Shedman, hope you get better soon.
Get well soon
I hope your recovery is speedy
Edit: Final completed figure tally:- 2397! :P
Well done Will! I don't think I hit 5% of your output :(
Will :o .........and you teach! Do you actually sleep, or is Lucifer a good mate?
Lucifer disowned me
Thanks to everyone for the kind words re my stroke. Unfortunately the vision thing is permanent so anything but undercoating is out. I can still base figures so other people, such as Nathan/ToxicPixie, paint for me and I play with them
Didn't get much done at all in 2016. I think I managed 2 games all year. But I am confident that with Hull now a city of culture I will be inspired to bigger and better things
All the best for the future Sheddy. Glad to hear you can still get games in.
Seconded
Edit to the edit:
Giving a Babylon 5 Earth fleet to a mate, painted one ship and some fighters some point in the 0es and then gave up!
