Title: Database error.
Post by: Techno on 22 November 2016, 04:36:42 PM
Anyone else getting a Database error message when trying to post a reply ?

Third time it's happened to me in the last couple of days.....2 in the past few minutes on "A Tale of Four Gamers."

Most of the time there doesn't seem to be any problem.
(That's provided THIS one 'gets through'.)

Does it look a bit like this, Techno?

If so, you're actually an android from the futiure.

Which could explain a lot really.  :-

Given the problems he has with computers I sometimes wonder about his Online name.

Testing.

Without hitting preview.

Title: Re: Database error.
Post by: Techno on 22 November 2016, 08:12:10 PM
That worked.....Now I'll preview it first.

(That worked too, said he simply modifying the above.)
Most odd.

Seems to be fine 90% of the time......But.....

Oh well.....Not to worry.

Hasn't happened since I mentioned it yesterday.

It was just a tad annoying yesterday, as I put in a long answer.....twice....and got the same message both times....So I gave up.  :(
Interesting if Will had a similar prob....and Steve.....Though Steve's seems to have worked, even with the error message coming up.
Where were you two trying to post ?

Mine were failing in "A tale of four gamers".....Perhaps I ought to give that thread another go. :-

Just tried testing there again.(ATO4G)

Database error came up.

Oh ye of little faith......I'll accept everyone's apologies for doubting my incredible technological savvy.  =O =O =O =O =O =O =O =O
Be useful to know if it affects everyone who tries to post there, if anyone's got a couple of minutes to waste.

One for Leon to pass on to Matt ?

OK -serious point. The thread has 192 pages, and is very picky heavy. I suspect that the allocated storage space is exhausted, and would need to be expanded to allow more posts.

Solutions -

1) Allocate more space - but would have to remove from somewhere else.

2) Close and archive the current thread, starting a new one.

I suspect several other threads may hit similar problems, let you guess which

Thanks, Ian.
That makes sense, even to a muppet like me.

I notice 'The other thread' has quite a few more pages.....But perhaps the piccies are much smaller 'file wise' ? (I'm sure there are some really big files in ATO4G)
I'll let Leon know.....If he hasn't already spotted this.

Maybe...As you say....If nothing else....We'll have to start a "A tale of four gamers" part two ?
I could delete the last post in the thread to see what happens...But I'd rather not mess around with stuff I don't really understand.  :-[

In a long career as an IT person, I have discovered that the two main causes of ICT problems are:

     1) Fingers
     2) Brains

These two need to be eliminated before as a cause of the error before any deeper investigation is undertaken.

It's usually a PICNIC error.

Problem In Chair, Not In Computer.

I know it as PEBKAC - Problem exists between keyboard and chair! :)

I've done a couple of quick tests on it, deleted a couple of old posts in it, but not fixed unfortunately.  As much as it pains me to say, Ian might be right about something and the thread could have reached it's limit...  :(

So, would SteveJ like the honour of starting us a fresh 'A Tale of...' thread?

Tried to post a one line reply to DFlynSqrl about his dwarves and got an error message saying to try again and report if it failed a second time but when I tried to repost I was told I'd already posted the message. Checked but no post from me listed so tried again. Eventually quoted DFlynSqrl and added my comment and it worked no problem. So if there are fifty million responses in the thread, all from me then .... Oops! Sorry! :(

Not sure on that one as I'm able to post new threads in there without any problems?  Can you start new threads in other boards?  If so, try posting up your batrep thread and I'll move it over to the BatReps board.

Just Tried to start a new thread in "painting diaries" - got the "hacked" error (which Matt has already explained as Generic).
Since y'all are working on it figured you would want to know.
I had links and pictures - going to retry opening a new thread with minimal content.

Tried again with minimal content - no joy! Change in user permissions issue? A previous legal character is now illegal?

I don't know if it works with issues like this, but have you tried an F5 refresh to clear the cache?  Try that on the forum homepage and then try posting a new thread somewhere?
Title: Re: Database error.
Post by: d_Guy on 06 December 2016, 03:50:35 PM
OK - in the end things worked.  This is all done from my iPad - blew all the he caches away (that's the only option I know of) - rebooted - Safari would still not post. But - switched to Firefox - buda - bing - It worked!
Of course I got happy fingers - was correcting the thread title when I posted it!
So d_guy's Cavalcade of Whimsey is now the cryptic "D_guy,S" - what ever - headspace error on my part.  :)

If I try to prieview it works but cuts the back slash so you only get :- displayed, anyone else experienced this?

Okay, whilst trying to edit the message I've discovered that the back-slash character is cut from all messages.

Just tried an experiment to post a row of 5 slashes alternating with 5 back-slashes to see how it displayed: /////

Got a database error, then the above posted!

Cheers!

A backslash is often used as an escape character. If you need a real backslash character, you need two of them.

Post by: paulr on 09 December 2016, 07:18:02 PM
That works at the moment, until a few days ago you didn't need two :-/

A good example is the :-\ button, use to work, you now need to add a \ or you get  :- despite it showing as  : - \ when editing
