So what am I up to, in light of now being a member of a club? [Previously my involvement in clubs was back in the 90s and with GW games. Stu (Col. Bill) does play, himself, but only seldom and with the gaming friends he's known for years. He's been playing quite a few Napoleonic games of late, but the French keep beating him and its a bit of a sore subject, so best not mention Napoleonic gaming to him if you see him at a show ;) ]
15mm Seven Years War, Anglo-Hanoverian army, that's what. John (another club member) has a large Freikorp15 French army, which he's rebased for Honours of War, and I've decided to collect an opposing force to allow the group and myself to use. [I'm also collecting 28mm Ancient Germans, but that's another story.]
I sent off for a trial order to Total System Scenics / QRF, who own the Freikorp15 range now, and received the small order from them the other day. Last night I painted a couple of test figures, to learn the paint colour order to 'assembly line paint' the Musketeer figures and generally see what I can do in the scale - as I've only previously dabbled in Peter Pig bits.
British musketeers belonging my interpretation of the 12th Foot. A Minden Regiment. I've gone with the black/grey gaiters post-1759 to aid a balance between colours - And when I paint the Hanover battalions they will be in white gaiters.

So, two musketeers down and ten more to paint - then 4 command and 4 grenadier company.
I've organised the paints I'll be using into lines based on order-of-use. 1st Layer line being what I'll use first, and then I'll progress to the 2nd Layer, where I paint the contrasting paint layer atop the darker 1st Layer colours.

No idea how long it will take me to paint a 20 figure battalion - and make the flags - but I may as well blog about it, to help motivate me.

Looks good Jim!
I heartily endorse the use of cheap tester pots, although I do like Asdas. They've just dropped a lot of the range from them though, seemingly, so I'm gutted!
Looking good !

Very nice. :)
15mm? Kill the heretic!
Very nice, but all the trim explains why I went 10mm.

15mm 7YW British Unit Paint Up [#2]
I did a couple of hours more work on the [x10] 7YW 15mm British musketeers last night.

I should get the Layer 1 stage completed through the course of today, might possibly also get some of the Layer 2 paints applied. Now that I know what colours to use, and where to apply them, these ten figures are painting up faster (individually) than the two test figures.
Here's what these will look like at the end:

I know. They should be the 18mm Eureka 7YW figures Colonel Bills sells ;D
Nobody is playing 10mm at the club yet. Though three of us do have Pendraken armies for various games.
Nice work, Roy ! :)

Yep, they make useful jam jars :D
Can't stand those drippy bottle paint pots! I'm a brush dipper-in-er, not a squirt it onto a palette type.
Day 3 on painting the x10 Musketeers.
Should get them finished today, then start on the x4 Grenadiers.

Me, too!* Great looking uniform but a b*gg*r to paint! Well done, Roy!
* so terrified of painting the trim, even sold off some 15mm Blue Moon SYW British rather than try to paint them!
Thank you
I can't say I've experienced any difficulty painting these (not boasting, or anything). I just set to them all and painted them in a methodical fashion, and I managed to get through them. The only areas that I actually needed to tidy up afterwards, after paint strayed over the edges, was when painting the white cross belts. Only thing I can say, is that my skill in hand-eye coordination has certainly improved, and that my hand's brush control is improving with each piece of work I manage to complete.
In 10 years time, all that acquired skill will probably have deteriorated with age, though :'(

Grenadiers and their caps.
The figures were mostly painted as shown with the Musketeers, see previous posts. The only exception being the headwear.

If you've been reading the blog comments in the previous posts, you may have seen some discussion as to how long it is taking me to paint these 15mm figures ... And how big a mess-up I made in estimating a time for each figure (good job I wasn't quoting an estimate of work!).
I reckon I spent around one hour per figure, with these x4 grenadiers.
Cheers,
Roy
That cap is very effective! Now, how about in 6mm ;)
Excellent
Thank you
The only models I have in 6mm are Nap's, I'm afraid.
I doubt I could manage it on a Baccus6mm, Heroic & Ros or Irregular Min's model, but might give it a try on an Adler (as they've normally got larger sculpted heads).
If it was possible for me to do, I bet I couldn't photo the results as they'd be so small my camera couldn't focus on them. Be Sod's Law, that :d
Heh, I'm only joking :D
A splodge of white with a tiny spot of colour/gold would more than suffice in 6mm ;)
I don't think my mental health or eyesight or nerves would cope with that :)
Are these a continuing labour of love to be done as and when, or shall you be cracking through them in the run up to Xmas ready for a game in the snow?!
Pass.
Another club member has a French army all ready to play, but no opponent. I've only got ACW naval that I can offer with the club, so have to join in using other's toys in their games. I'm hoping to get x3 infantry, x1 horse, x1 artillery and x1 officer painted asap so the club can play Honours of War 7YW. Would love to have it done before Xmas, but the deciding factor is my IBS as sitting for long periods buggers up my guts.
Ooo, nasty, that sounds unfun. Can you try a "standing desk"? Apparently they're amazing and brilliant and cure everything. I suspect marketing hype, but you never know. We could probably all do with actually standing up more often (he says, wedged into the Bond villain rotating chair for the next eight hours). Or even one of those "backless stools" with the posture device - where you're knees rest on a pad and have to engage your back and stomach muscles to sit? I had one and it was actually really brill till I discovered you could perch on it differently and completely negated the point of it...
Good luck - HoW is a cracking game!
I checked out standing desks to help my back out, but they are not a cheap option.
Just had a quick shufti at Ikea, and minimum cost is £175?! Ouch. My current desk cost, errr, nowt, as it was from Freecycle :D
Definitely something I'd want to try out first before I splashed out...
Ouch indeed! Presumably you would also wish to sit at some point, in which case you would have to buy a tall chair (like a bar or breakfast bar stool), which I imagine won't be cheap either.
Well, I could steal one from the breakfast bar.
Derp. There's a thought. I could just repurpose the breakfast bar... although Ms. Toxic might object...
But that might be a cheap option, especially we got ours off fleaBay for about a fiver and petrol :D
;D Yeah. Might be easier nicking it from the breakfast bar - nicking one from a pub could be tricky.
Here's another thought. Instead of splashing out £175, why not just dig a hole in the floor? :)
My floor is boards over concrete. I think digger hire would be more expensive. Although doing it with a pick axe might be good exercise :D
My issue is the need to be moving, as the exercise helps to combat the gastric wind issue and movement allows for wind release! :O)
[that was the nearest smilie I could find to a noisy fart].
Lack of exercise normally results in the pressurised wind/gas moving onto my chest and restricts breathing, then I end up with my head down the bog dry-retching until I pass the watery-wind/gas combination that had become trapped in my body.
I have stood to paint, in the past. But I've phlebitis in one ankle and the resulting swelling becomes an issue when stationary.
Not that I'm wishing to complain, or turn this thread into a health debate ;D
Bloody hell Roy, if you were a horse and all that!
Maybe a standing desk on wheels, or possibly a treadmill underneath?! Go for a gentle stroll whilst painting, what could go wrong?
He'd probably slip and break his pelvis!
Very nicely painted figures Roy.

Thanks Bodvoc.
Just one figure left to paint - drummer + two Ensigns / flags done - then on to varnish and basing.
Load of metal arrived yesterday, enough to do x3 batts, x1 horse, x1 art + limber, officers. With what I've already got, when they're painted I'll have enough to play either side in the St. Ulrich scenario in the HoW book.
Good luck, don't break anything!
St Ulrich is a good little scenario, Roy. I've played it four times now as Prussians v Austrians, including swapping the sides over. It's given a different game every time - great fun!
The first infantry unit is near completion. Just the officer figure, varnishing, and basing left to do.
Here's the three figures (so far painted) belonging the command stand (flags are home made)

Yes Roy, they are hanging sleeves, a leave over from C16th fashion. Originally such sleeves could be buttoned up along the seam to make sleeves to cover the arm.
Thanks Leman. They completely threw me when it came to painting the figure, I couldn't find the answer in my books so just guessed.
Probably I've painted them wrong? But, tough now, as I can live with it and will do any future paint jobs correctly.
Think you have made a pretty good job of those sleeves.
Ha! Bloody Sod's Law that I go and do a google search for "British Drummer Minden" and what's one of the first images I find?

Er. I hadn't thought about that one. My brain just went with the 'looking at it in a mirror' theory, but you're probably correct.
Cheers for pointing it out, as I'll sort something out now.

Looking very nice Roy, bet you can't wait to get them in table!
Ahhh, the perils of a scale big enough to make out the numbers :D
I once spent ages painting a lovely paper flag for my 10mm ACW, only to glue it on upside down. I didn't even notice until their first game. It is still upside down to this day!
I coat my flags in pva glue, to stiffen the paper and allow it to fold as if windblown. The glue made the bloody red paint run into the whites and I had to repaint them (hence why the white looks thick on the Union Flag).

Heh, I suggest a game where you just get to practise manouvre ing up and down the parade ground, Roy ;)
15mm 7YW British Unit Paint Up [#7]
