Have read your post, and didn't know that there were updated rules for these. Will check them out.
I have saalfeld and salem church from the same series, and have played them both. What you say is correct, i played saalfeld first and a few months later i played salem church, thinking i would still be familiar with the rules. Boy was i wrong ;D
It really is something that you should pick up occasionaly to refresh or it goes down the drain. Will try one of their ww2 titles in the future, curious how those will play out. (actually drawn to IWO: bloodbath in the bonins, wich is bigger at 100 counters)

Peter there is plenty of small stuff going on that are tweaks on standard gaming such as no line of sight across a wood hexside (so no artillery in woods to wood) and attacks into woods across an open hex side are specifically referred to. Other rules would do similar, but just word it in a more standard way. At times I have gone to full rules to look for intent.
I did a Saalfeld AAR and quite fancy Salem Church. You certainly can't knock the price for a dabble.

Indeed you can't!
Also very easy games if you have small children around. You can play them in an evening and not be afraid of them messing up your board. Some of the biger games out there require them to be setup for a few evnings. Without a dedicated games room, that's a no-go with young uns around!
