Title: The Italian Wars - Early phase - what is needed to get this range going?
Post by: Sandinista on 23 September 2016, 03:13:13 AM
I'm a big fan of this period, and my 6mm armies no longer enthuse me. Too small to look good these days  :(

I had a search on the forum as I thought there was a thread covering this, but failed to find it. I was thinking what new sculpts or tweeks would Leon need to get done to get this range off the ground. Not a lot needs doing in my opinion, I've had a quick poke about on the website and here my thoughts...

New Sculpts - where I could not find anything suitable
Spanish Genitor
Sword and bucklermen
Mounted Arquebus

Tweeks - mainly head swaps adding period helmets etc
Foot:
Pike - ER9, ER10, ELM9, ELM35
Halberdiers - ER1, ER14, ELM31
Arquebusiers - ER16, ELM11
Crossbowmen - ELM10
Italian Spearmen - ER5
Landsknechts: need more variety
Pike - LAN1
Doppelsoldner - LAN2, LAN3
Arquebus - LAN5
Crossbow - LAN4
Standard bearer with bare pole

Horse:
Stradiots - EL10 and OT6 would make a good starting point
Gendarmes - ER18, ELM1 a bit more ornate, and tidying up of horse barding
Other cavalry - ER12, ER19, ELM2, ELM28

Command packs would need adapting from the Flodden range or creating from scratch

What are your opinions on this?

Cheers
Ian

Landsknechts advancing with pikes at 45 degrees would be welcome.

I have been pushing for this for some time. I agree with the comments on Landsknechts, particularly the arquebusiers, who seems to be the least landsknecht-like of the lot. I'm hoping something will happen before too long, which is why I am concentrating on Flodden for the time being. However I fear we may be up against the BKC commitment, in which I have absolutely no interest.

There have been several threads on the subject (search for "Italian wars" and you'll find some).

I'd mentioned to Sandinista in an email about having a look at what would be needed, so if we can put together a potential list of additions along the lines of:

Sword & Buckler x 4 sculpts (2 foot, 1 officer, 1 musician)???

...then we can look at fitting something in during the first half of next year.

There wouldn't be any clash with BKC, as any additions for that going forward are likely to be vehicles and done by a different sculptor.  Our main historical guy is finishing off some WWI additions before moving onto an 1860 Italian revamp.  After that we'll need to decide whether to put him back to Napoleonics or whether to give these Italian Wars sculpts a bit of attention.
