I am back from my vacation (only to go to Pleven next week :)) and it was a good vacation. I spent most of my time in the mountain village at Ceffalonia , but took some days in Athens to meet friends. Among these were two friends from Istanbul whom I took to various musuems, including the Georgios Averoff. Here are some pictures from my visit.

Great shots :-bd
Our game last weekend featured the Georgios Averoff :o
We re-fought the Battle of Elli and Georgios Averoff took significant damage http://www.pendrakenforum.co.uk/index.php/topic,13403.msg212354.html#msg212354 (http://www.pendrakenforum.co.uk/index.php/topic,13403.msg212354.html#msg212354)
It is a period of naval warfare that both Pierre the Shy and I are interested in.
Thanks for posting your pictures Konstantinos - very interesting to see the period details below decks.
She must be one of the few remaining complete warships from that era. Others I can think of offhand are the Mikasa (Admiral Togo's flagship at Tsushima) which is preserved in Japan and the Oylimpia (Admiral Dewey's flagship at Manila Bay in 1898) which is somewhere in the US.
As Paul says we used the Georgios Averoff in our game last week - the pre-dreadnought mods that he came up with for GQ2 worked very well.
Cheers
Peter
From pre-dread era it is indeed Mikasa, Averoff, Olymbia and Aurora and Drazki. If you get them all together you have a Battleship, Armored Cruiser, Protected Cruiser, Light Cruiser and Torpedo boat. So a full fleet :)
If you include dreadnought era you have the Texas in the US and the Caroline in the UK, the Zhongshan in China,
If you include Ironcalds-Steam warships you have the Huascar in Chile, the Warrior in the UK, the Jylland in Danemark, the full replica of the Ting Yuan in China, the Don Fernando II e Gloria in Portugal, the USS Constellation in the US, the Buffel and Schorpioen in the Netherlands, the Leitha in Budapest, the Rap in Norway, the Solve in Sweden, the HMS M33 in the UK.
So lots of these, but yes the Averoff is the largest in Europe.
A trip to visit each of those =P~ =P~ =P~
Enjoyed the photo tour with all the interesting details KT. Thanks. I have toured the USS Texas here in the States and it struck me as much more Spartan -battleship grey and rivet heads everywhere. Speaking of heads ( :)), your pictures show black and white tile floors in the bathroom areas, is this usual aboard warships?
Great pictures, Konstantinos !
Cheers - Phil

Wow, great to see that such a ship still exists :)
Nice!!!
Have a model of the averoff lying around somewhere. Interesting to see it in 'full'. Probably visiting cefalonia next year, didn't go on holiday this year, so no greek island. (me and my wife have been visiting a greek island each year since we got togheter)
Last one was Zakynthos,so had a look at cefalonia from far away already ;D

The Averoff was a flagship for a long period, so the extra-luxurious bathrooms were for the admiral, captain and some staff. Ergo why you see the excellent woodwork etc.
Still on the active list? I wonder if she can make steam :D
Good visit, cracking floating museum!

They have taken out the propellers, but I think it could be made sea-worthy quite quickly.
Now that'd be cool :)
