Title: Science of pseudonyms...
Post by: Leon on 19 August 2016, 01:30:57 PM
It's been a while since we've discussed this, so given the newly registered 'Alvin Molethrottler'... what's the reason behind your username?

Mine is fairly obvious I'd think, I'm a huge fan of Jean Reno...  ;)

I wrote some articles for various GW magazines. I needed a name for an Elven general and came up with "Ithoriel."

Shortly afterwards a series of amalgamations of Internet Service Providers meant that my previous pseudonyms - "Ozymandias" and "exterminatus_est" were no longer available to me unless I appended a number, which I was not willing to do (I am not a number I am a free man! :)  ), so I started using Ithoriel instead.

So not down to a hankering after a life in livestock husbandry? :)

The short version of my nomme de faux-guerre: Guillaume d'Guy, which in turn is a play on my real name and neighborhood of birth.

Mine is not, as Techno would have it the initials of my name which is, as Techno would have it Frederick Simeon Nobbs.

It comes from my bon mot - "flipping* say nothing" which came to me from the less than law abiding side of the family and described their relationship with the gentlemen of law and order. A distant relative of mine was coachman to Colonel Blood, of crown jewels robbing fame, and it was a great aunt of mine who was the partner of Victoria Helen McCrae Duncan, the last convicted witch in Britain. My aunt exited the parish just before the flatfoots (flatfeet?) entered.

*Other adverbs are available.

Techno is the shortened version of 'Technodestructorman', a daft 'superhero' name I was given by one of my colleagues at the Evil Empire.

I haven't got a clue how he came up with that particular name. Certainly not at that particular time of my life.....Though it might be regarded as quite apt nowadays.

Cheers - Phil

Originally because I would have supported parliament rather than a foppish, self-centred king. Latterly because I am in awe of the stand the Belgians put up against the invasion of 1914. My favourite cartoon is of the Belgian boy standing up to the club wielding adult bully.

In keeping with my interest in the Mongols, the superstitious side of my subconscious thought that naming oneself after a famous commander-albeit a relatively unknown commander in the west- would actually increase ones wargaming prowess...does it bo**ox! I have just stuck with it.  More recently I have mostly been using a more sensible name.

He was prescient.

What? The imaginary place made up by Thomas Hardy?  Says a lot.

I tend to start a fresh one every now and then as we get more new members on board.  It's always interesting to hear the origins of some of our more random monikers...

It's my name, so i took that. In all honesty, i tend to forget logins, so when i make a new one, i just use my name followed by 123.

also, my friends say 'pieje' or something similar, wich does not come out well in english i think

Quite a few years ago about the time of the first Lord of the Rings film the miniatures company "Vendle" brought out their fantasy range. At the time I was helping Sunjester and another friend at quite a few wargames shows with their company.

Chatting in the van coming back from  a show having seen the  new range , someone said (not me guv) that it would be good to do the Battle of the Five Armies using these figures.  We all agreed to do one of the Good Armies  of about 80 figures and to make up the opposition we would each do a warband of  "just a few orcs".

The arms race escalated, fuelled by Colins genereous trade discount.  I liked the Orcs and Goblins the best and each show I would say " I am just going to Vendle for a few orcs".  My warband  of 28mm Orcs is now  some 600-700 strong plus associated trolls, giants and  characters .  I still have about 100 left to paint and do a few every so often as I like painting them.

Now when we get them out to play there are often 1200-2000 figures on the table.  You can have a look at the club page to get an Idea.  Its a 12 foot wide table and the Orcs are wall to wall and often 4 units deep

Quite a few are Sunjesters, he probably does not have quite as many as me( perhaps 400)  but he does have Dwarves , Elves and Hadrahim as well, while I have Gondor and Rohan.
