Thanks to the help I got in this thread http://www.pendrakenforum.co.uk/index.php/topic,14479.msg206833.html#msg206833 (http://www.pendrakenforum.co.uk/index.php/topic,14479.msg206833.html#msg206833) I have decided to go ahead with this project :)
Unfortunately using figures from another manufacturer :o :-[
I will be using figures from 13 different ranges while Pendraken only has 3-4 applicable ranges as yet, also placing one order saves on the cost of postage to NZ
My order was posted on 2 August and is currently at the Heathrow Worldwide Distribution Centre "being made ready for dispatch overseas"
I now urgently need to shake the cold that has been delaying my progress on my 1917 project so I can clear the 'decks' for this new project :!!

It is the reason Wales is so green.
The past few days have seemed like Autumn here in Bristol. Today finally looks like Summer has returned...
Lovely sunny day yesterday in Tenby, and it's amazing today! ;)

To quote my Director of Studies at Aberystwyth,"In Wales there are two types of weather, raining ... and about to rain!" :)
Another hot, sunny, sweaty day in Bangkok. As #%$$% usual.
Fell down overnight three days ago, smattering of rain day before yesterday, few drops yesterday but today is bright and clear....but watch this space.

I could live elsewhere, but Lee would be unemployable. I couldn't do that to her.
My order still appears to be languishing at Heathrow ~X( :!!
I've nearly seen of this cold and the forecast looks to be improving, over 10 degrees and showers rather than rain
Are you sure you don't live in Wales, rather than New Zealand, Paul. ;)
Cheers - Phil
Well no one lives in Wales by choice.
IanS
Or the Wirral. ;)

I'm sure I live in NZ too many vowels in the place names to be Wales, e.g. Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanatahu
My order has moved on and arrived in Beijing :o :-/
Next stop - Madrid ?

Hasn't Grumps suffered the same thing occasionally ? :-\

Hi
No, my stuff was actually from China and took an extended leave in Shanghai. Have any NZ swimmers insulted Chinese swimmers as well :-/.

I don't think so, we tend to leave that to the Ozzies ;)
I got excited earlier today. Reception at work sent me an email saying a package had arrived for me :)
I popped down and there was a package from the 'other supplier' :)
To reduce postage costs I had Amazon UK send my copy of DBA 3.0 to the 'other supplier' to forward to me. The 'other supplier' had forwarded it to me by International Priority mail without track and trace. The actual figures were sent with track and trace. Both were sent at the same time at the same post office.
As you have probably guessed the package that has arrived is my copy of DBA 3.0 while the figures, sent via the more expensive track and trace, stil languish in Beijing ~X( ~X( :!!
And now Royal Mail's track and trace page has been down for two days ~X( ~X( ~X( >:(
Still hasn't arrived in NZ as the NZPost track and trace page has no info on the tracking number ~X(
Do you mean the Royal Mail Track & Trace in GB, Paul ?... :-\
I can get at that OK.
If you want to PM me the tracking number, I'll look it up, and PM you any details tomorrow morning, if that's any help.
Cheers - Phil
Yep UK Royal Mail, thanks for the offer Phil, PM sent :)
The Royal Mail website is still telling me it is down for essential maintenance ~X( ~X( ~X(
Good news - Royal Mail track & trace page is back up again :)
Bad news - my figures are still in Beijing :(
They have been there over a week ~X( ~X( ~X(
Golly, you don't suppose they are collecting enough packages to fill a container for NZ!? :-\ :o
The proverbial slow but to China and all that!
I commiserate with you, nothing like the long watch!
Incidently - a general question - is Peking Duck now properly called Beijing Duck and does it remain in column A?
Depends whether it was the first ball of the over?
Well hopefully good news :) :-\
Both the RoyalMail and NZPost websites are claiming my parcel was delivered to my work at 12:11 on Friday :)
No email from reception advising the parcel has arrived :-SS
A quick call to the NZPost contact centre confirmed that it has been delivered, but with the interesting logic postal companies seem to specialise in, not to the actual office specified on the address but to the companies Post Office Box. This is actually a large red sack that will be delivered to my actual office (by NZPost) on Monday :-/
So hopefully some time on Monday the figures will arrive in the mail room at work :-w
Burning a candle for you! Waiting for these dam' things to arrive is surprisingly stressful.
A possible Schrödinger's cat sort of thing. Until Monday when the bag is opened they are both there and not there.
The added worry is there a multiple offices around the country, I hope they sent it to the right PO Box :-SS :-w
They got the right PO Box :)
I got an email from reception at 8:15 this morning saying I had a parcel and popped down to collect it :) :)
Now I just have to resist the temptation of opening the box until I get home tonight O:-) :-w
Order a te deum at once. Fireworks. Royal progression. Have your favourite mistress send over. You get the idea.
Just a quiet night in for you FK? ;)
I managed to last about 3 hours before I carefully cut the tape and opened the box to have a look ;D

Will be interesting to see how they paint up ... After I finish the last lot of my 1917 project

Sorted through the order last night, a couple of figures missing
Fortunately from two different packs both for units that will be based 8 figures per base, so hiding the missing figures will not be too hard :)
Five extra figures, fortunately all in one pack that will be based 5 per base :) :)
Pierre the Shy's figures are all present and correct, he added a few WWI Belgians to my order to save on postage
Spent over four hours sorting all the figures into the different troop types in each army #:-S
I need to finish my 1917 project so I can start painting these :!!

Bigger than Ben Hur? Almost ;)
IIRC Paul is looking at producing 6 DBA arrmies related to the First Crusade plus extra units to allow them to field any unit in their respective DBA v3 army list.
Details are in this link: http://www.pendrakenforum.co.uk/index.php/topic,14479.0.html

Pierre the Shy is correct, 6 DBA armies for the First Crusade. I've got all the elements in each army plus a few extras to allow me to field two Armenian and Early Crusader armies and also to convert the Early Crusader army to Later Crusader
III/66 Fatimid Egyptian 22 elements 128 figures
III/74b Other Seljuq Turkish 21 elements 77 figures
IV/1a Komnenan Byzantine 21 elements 87 figures
IV/2 Cilician Armenian 27 elements 139 figures - added 3 elements to field two armies
IV/6a Syrian 15 elements 55 figures
IV/7 Early Crusader 25 elements 174 figures - added 4 elements to field two armies
IV/17 Later Crusader 3 elements 16 figures - add ons to convert Early to Late Crusader army
Camps 8 elements 32 figures
Camp followers 2 elements 8 figures
144 elements 716 figures
:o Wow!
With the base cost of postage from the UK it is much more efficient to place one large order than several small ones
That little lot will keep me busy for quite a while ;)

I have to finish my 1917 project first so they can capture Jerusalem :)
I started preparing the first lot of figures for this project, pack camels that I will be using for the DBA camps :)
Finished preparing the camels and also some Arab swordsmen for the camps and also for a couple of stands of denizens :)
Now I just need to get the last batch of the 1917 project off my painting rods :!!
With the forecast for tomorrow being Occasional rain, ... Northerly strengthens; I needed to get the first batch of this project spray undercoated today :!!
I sorted some of the 1917 project figures onto the bases that were labelled this morning freeing up three painting rods. With the one I already had spare that was enough for the first batch of this project :)
The packs camels and Arab swordsmen are now spray undercoated and drying in the sun :)
The will be ready for me to start painting tomorrow :) :)
Camels and Arab swordsmen base coated :) :)
Probably don't need to ask for pictures when you have some of your new DBA stuff ready? :)

It is slightly convex
I was wondering if it was a large cooking pan to go on a fire, a bit like a shallow paella pan. I vaguely recall seeing something similar used to cook bread :-\
Fortunately it is one of the last things to paint so I have time to ponder
Just been to look on the pack camels that I've painted - and they are different, with a different load out with a small box on the top. I think mine were from the Sudan range.
It could be a covered shield, or a cooking thing, pan or stone.
These look a possibility. The handles would fold under the pan to give the shape shown. No idea if they would be just the cast iron item hung on the side or if it would have a cover of some sort.

Great progress over the weekend :)
Painting finished on the Pack camels except the last few bags to touch up :) :!!
Painting and touch ups finished on the Camp followers :) :)
Wash, final dry brush and figure bases to do then ready to base
Bases cut and prepared, both sides painted, edges left to to :) :!!
Started on the first of a new batch, Syrian mounted prepared and undercoated, currently drying in the late afternoon sun :)
Touched up the last few bags on the pack camels :)
Finished painting the edges of the bases last night, glued magnetic vinyl on this morning before heading off to work :)
Washed the pack camels and camp followers :)
Labelled bases underneath :)
I'm labeling the stands with the army list entry underneath and a label on top which identifies troop type and is coloured by army
This will make identification easy as we only be using these troops occasionally
Base coat and dry brushed the Syrian mounted's horses :)
As well as the coloured labels I'm planning to use variations in the colour palette to differentiate each army
My thoughts at the moment are:
- III/66 Fatamid Egyptian - various blues
- III/74b Seljuq Turkish - various Browns
- IV/1a Komnenan Byzantine - purple, blues and reds
- IV/2 Cilician Armenian - various greens
- IV/6a Syrian - muted colours similar to my 1917 Arabs
- IV/7 Early Crusader & IV/17 Later Crusader - various reds
All the armies will be based around the muted colours I used for my 1917 Arabs http://www.pendrakenforum.co.uk/index.php/topic,10663.msg204439.html#msg204439 (http://www.pendrakenforum.co.uk/index.php/topic,10663.msg204439.html#msg204439)
All but the Syrians will have some stronger colours added, typically one piece of clothing on a figure and only a few figures per stand
Units like Ghulams which were more 'regular' will have a more uniform appearance
The colour choices are somewhat arbitrary, thoughts and / or suggestions welcome
Like the idea of using colours to co-ordinate armies, not only does it make them easier to identify on the table, it also helps with painting.
What are the roman numerals, and numbers for before the names of the different factions (e.g. III/66)?
Crusaders need one unit to be black and white, with one red leader?

Hello Fred
If memory serves me well (not always guaranteed), the Roman numeral stands for the DBM/DBMM army book and the number is the place of the army list within that book. So IV/2 Cilician Armenian would b the second army list within Book IV. This was so that people could cross reference the bare bones DBA army list with the more detailed DBM/DBMM description.
Cheers
GrumpyOldMan
Memory serves you well Grumpy :)
ML, I suspect that was a later Crusade or am I missing something :-\
Well, they are listed as Early/Later Crusader on your post?
First Crusade is Hugh, Godfrey, Raymond, and Bohemond rather than Richard, ML.
Don't forget Tancred. I've always had a fondness for him.
Quote from: mad lemmey on 13 September 2016, 06:25:13 AM
Well, they are listed as Early/Later Crusader on your post?
Apologies for the confusion, the project is aimed at the First Crusade and the main army is the Early Crusader. By adding one Light Horse, one Spear and one Bow elements I can convert the Early Crusader list to the Later list. This gives me another army option at minimal cost. If I had needed to add some Knights they would definitely be black and white, with one red leader
I've made good progress today :) :) :)
The Syrian mounted are now mainly done :o :)
Skin, belts and a few details to do, then they are ready to wash. I'm going to try highlighting the weapons and armour after the wash
The Camps and Camp Followers are now based :o :) :)
Probably some sand flock touch ups to do once the basing is dry and then I will need to wait for varnishing weather :-w
Cloudy tomorrow and next Wednesday, rain or showers for the rest of the next 10 days ~X( :-w
I've prepared the Syrian foot and also cut out all the bases needed for the Syrians :)
I hope to undercoat the foot and sand the bases during the less cloudy periods tomorrow :-SS

16 Mounted
24 Foot

While painting the Syrian mounted I have realised I don't know much about stirrups during the First Crusade. From what I can see in Ian Heath's book stirrups were widely used but there seems to be several different types; some metal, some appear to be leather :-\
So what colour should I paint the stirrups :-/
The weather today was much better than forecast, sunny with a high of 17 :) Great drying weather so I made a lot more progress than I was expecting :) :)
The Syrian mounted are now painted :) and will be washed tonight :!!
The required sand flock touch ups on the Camps and Camp Followers were done this morning and the edges touched up around lunch time :)
The Syrian foot were undercoated this morning :) and will be base coated tonight :!!
The bases for the Syrians have been sanded, both sides painted and the first coat done on the edges :) They will get the last coat on the edges tonight :!!
I prepared the Byzantine heavy mounted (don't have room on the painting rods for the light) and got them undercoated late afternoon :)
I even managed to take some pictures of the Camps and Camp Followers, I better get them posted ;)
Cool
Base coated the Syrian foot :)
Last coat on the edges of the Syrian based done :)
I'll wash the Syrian mounted in an hour or so :-w
Camps
In DBA each army or command in Big Battles DBA needs a Camp. I decided to go with pack camels on 80x40 bases.
For this project I need 8 camps so decided to get them out of the way at the beginning
The first four

Camp Followers
In some circumstances the camp followers or denizens of a BUA (Built up area) can sally forth so I put together a couple of elements in case they are needed
(http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t197/paulreynolds999/DBA%20First%20Crusade%20project/IMG_1650_zpsv4fbucip.jpg)
As we will be using these troops infrequently and each army has several different troop types I have decided to use a small label to identify the troop type
Denizens? Those look like inhabitants.
Denizens, an example of Barkerese
Those are brilliant.
Look terrific !
Cheers - Phil
What have you used for the basing material Paul?
Great looking! Continue to admire your use of muted colour - very realistic.
Like also all those guys named Dennis was it? :)
This is the camel group that doesn't have the satellite dishes right? Or did I miss them?
Definitely some "frying pans" or whatever amongst them.
1st Camel picture - near column 2 & 4, back column 4
3rd Camel picture - near column 1 & 3, rear column 2 & 3
Suitably dark, metallic disk.
Thanks Paul - see them now and pretty easy to spot, too - apparently thought the were going to be aluminum (or something) and looked right past them. :)
Cast iron that has been sitting on top of a fire for years was the look I was after ;)
Quote from: Bren on 15 September 2016, 11:49:44 AM
What have you used for the basing material Paul?
I used a mix of wall filler (spackle), paint and PVA to cover the base then dip in a mix of various sand type 'flocks', mainly Woodland scenics. The brown rocks are from Cloud9 and are sprinkled on before the dip
If you want I will rummage in my flock draw and let you know the various flocks
I washed the Syrian mounted last night and the mail has come out nicely :)
Silver highlights, final dusty dry brush and figure bases left to do, I better crack on with their bases :!!
Touched up the base coat on the Syrian foot this morning before heading off to work :)
More good progress last night and this morning :) :)
Silver highlights, final dusty dry brush and figure bases done on the Syrian mounted, they are ready to base :)

Byzantine heavy mounted's horses base coated last night and dry brushed this morning :)
I better sort out which of the remaining Byzantines to prepared for the painting rods currently occupied by the Syrian mounted :-\
Progress continues apace :)
Finalised the base labels with the guys last night, some tweaks required to the samples I've done :)
Started details on the Syrian foot, skin base colour done :)
Byzantine heavy mounted horse's manes, tails and markings done :)
Armour base colour painted, details added :)
Sorted out which Byzantine are next, will prep them today :)
I'm really enjoying painting the smaller batches in this project even thought they are mostly irregular
how do you do your base labels?
cheers
Ian
I use a small rectangle 10x5mm, the rectangle is coloured for the army and the DBA troop type is on the label in white. Below is an example of the labels for the Syrian army.
DBA bases are 40x 20, 30, or 40 depending on the troop type.
The astute amongst you will have noted there are more than 12 labels and there are 12 elements in a DBA army, this is because there are 3 optional elements.
Syrian foot done, except for skin highlight, wash and figure bases :)
Byzantine heavy mounted details done apart from skin and a few details on the Latinikon :)
Time to prep some Byzantine light mounted and foot :!!
Syrian foot done, ready to base :) :)

Squeaks of excitement. :)
Cheers - Phil.
Best part of two armies finished already - blimey!! :o
Better get my PM WW1 stuff ordered too ;)
Crikey you are cracking on with these.
I assume as its DBA you don't have many figures to a base or many bases to an army?
Not many figures, I'm using almost the same numbers of figures for mounted as suggested for 15mm (2, 3 or 4 depending on type).
For foot I'm using about double the suggested numbers for 15mm (3-9 depending on type)
The Syrian "army" is only 55 figures ;)
The weather may be good enough for varnishing on Saturday, hopefully followed by some photographs :)
All the camps and the first army done in less than a month :o :) #:-S

Hmm. I've been painting 45 figures for a unit for my LoA project!!
I'm not sure which is the best approach. You at least get playable forces very quickly.
That's what DBA is for.
The largest army is the Early Crusader with 190 figures ;)
That gives me enough to troops to field two Early Crusader armies or to convert one of them to Later Crusader
Several of the troops have two options, e.g. Knights or dismounted knights as Blade, so covering all options gave me almost two armies. It made sense to add the few more to give two full armies and add the three to allow conversion to Later Crusader
Progress continues, it's almost as thought I'm on a mission from ... ;D

Cracking job, Paul ! :-bd
Cheers - Phil
Quite nice, Paul! As always admire your use of muted colours and you approach to desert basing. :-bd :-bd =D>
Awesome! 8)
Top notch work,
looking forward to hearing about them (and seeing them)going into action.
Thanks guys :-[ :) :)
I'm pretty pleased with how they have turned out
After some consideration it looks like I will be doing the IV/2 Cilician Armenian army next :-\
139 figures but that gives me the troops to field two armies that can fight against the Syrians and Byzantines
Then it will be the Crusaders with 190 figures, including the add ons to convert an Early Crusader army to Late
This will also give me enough troops to field two Early Crusader armies
Hi Paulr,
really nice project!
Actually I am writting some scenarios for the first crusade... Already wirtten Ncea and Dorileo but probably will last 5 battles (Antioch, Jerusalem and Ascalon) to game what I consider the main episodes. They are written for Medieval warmaster. If you are interested in read the scenarios pm with your email direction and I will send it to you.
PM sent :)
Good progress again over the weekend :)
I've finished painting the remaining Byzantines, just touch ups, wash and figure bases left to do :!!
The bases are painted and I've glued on the magnetic vinyl and detailed labels underneath :)
Coloured top labels to do and they will be ready for basing :!!
I've sorted the Armenians into two batches, one possible army in each :)
I need to start preparing the figures of the first batch :!!
Touch ups and wash done on the remaining Byzantines :)
Coloured top labels done :)
Byzantine heavy mounted sorted onto the bases :)
That made room for the first of the first batch of the Armenians; Mounted and Franks
These are now under coated :)
The remainder of the first batch of the Armenians; Bow and Spear are prepared and waiting for the remaining Byzantines to make room on the painting rods :!!
Photos? ;)
Patience...
Once they are based and varnished ;)
Looking at the weather forecast probably Tuesday
Patience is a virtue, but I lost my virtue looooong ago!
;D ;D ;D
Final dry brushes done on the remaining Byzantines :)
They have now been sorted 'onto' their bases making room for the remainder of the first batch of the Armenians; Bow and Spear
The remainder of the first batch of the Armenians have been undercoated :)
The first of the first batch of the Armenians; Mounted and Franks have had their horses base coated and dry brushed :)
Manes and tails next :!!
Manes, tails, hooves & markings done on the Armenian horses :)
Fiddling about with a QRS for DBA 3.0, got it all on 2 A4 pages, just #:-S
Based Byzantines last night :) :)
Touched up Byznatines bases this morning :)
Based
74 Mounted
108 Foot
182 Total
Base coated armour and helmets on Armenians :)
More touch ups on the Byzantine bases :-w
More base colours and some dry brushing on the Armenians :)
Cut out the bases for the Armenians, even though they won't be needed for a while ;)
Beginning to suspicion that you are an engineer - or a Puritain minister! :D
At any rate vastly admire your work ethic. =D> =D>
;D ;D ;D
Network Engineer ;)
Most of the base colours now done on the Armenians :)
There was a break in the showers and cloud :)
It was long enough to varnish the Byzantines :) :)
And to take some pictures once the varnish was dry :) :) :)
I better post process them and get them posted :!!

Cracking stuff Paul!
Hope the game goes as well as the painting :)
When's Manzikert due?
Nice looking troops, like they way you have kept to a limited palette, does make them look part of a whole.
I'd always like to see more troops in a unit though!
Very nice.
Like 'em, Paul :-bd
They have a lot of flavuor. Geat painting!
Especially superbly brilliant!

I was tempted to use the 25mm figure bases, 60mm wide :-\
but that would have meant well over a thousand figures for the project :o
And......?
Longer to wait between pictures ;D
Super work.
I think the long wait would be worth it. I generally DBA (2.2+) with 10mm 0n 60mm frontage, however I also usually only do two armies at a time.
Nice job dude m/ m/ :-bd :-bd =D> =D>
Good progress on detailing the first batch of Armenians :)
Got to play a solo 'test' game of DBA 3.0 with the Syrians and Byzantines :) :) :)
I will post a brief report, hopefully tonight
I'm giving 3 to 5 on the Byzantines. :D
More progress on the Armenians, most of the details now done :)
Tack, metalwork details, skin and hair left to do :!!
I also posted a brief report on the solo 'test' game http://www.pendrakenforum.co.uk/index.php/topic,13403.msg215528.html#new (http://www.pendrakenforum.co.uk/index.php/topic,13403.msg215528.html#new)
armies full of character! nice looking game
Thanks Jchaos :)
Tack, metalwork details, skin and hair done :)
Touch ups done :)
I'll wash them tonight and do the final dry brushes tomorrow :!!
Sanded and painted both sides of the bases for both batches of Armenians :)
I need to get the edges, magnetic vinyl and labels done on these :!!
Then get on to preparing the second batch of Armenians
First batch of Armenians washed last night :)
Final dry brush and figure bases painted this morning :)
Most base edges painted last night, final few finished this morning :)
Glued magnetic vinyl to bases finished last night :)
Labels for bases and prep of second batch of Armenians to do next :!!
Glued magnetic vinyl to bases finished this morning :)
Labels tomorrow :!!
Looking forward to have look to those armenians
My Byzantines have just struggled to a close-run victory over the Franks. If the crusader general had not got her knights a bit boxed in with friendly troops, the results might have been different.
I hope I'm not crashing your party; feel free to have the pictures deleted if I am. Byzantines and Franks yesterday, photographed by Timedrone. Unusual that both sides got to plunder each other's camps (pretty good, Franks; after 66.6667% loss).
Varangians didn't sweep away the German spearmen as fast as hoped, but the Latinikon took out Richard and his crusaders fairly effectively.
Looking good FK
Indeed FK, looking really good. Exciting clash.
All right, then, a few more.... The early stages; the military orders mass against the imperial right, while the Hetairoi prepare to punch out the Frankish centre. The Cumans saw off the Hospital's turcopoles with ease.
Serious situation for the Franks; the Alans are getting rid of the Templar turcopoles (it took an inordinately long time), and the crusaders are blocked off from advancing by the melee.
Interesting looking game FK
Bases labelled :)
First batch of Armenians sorted onto bases :)
Second batch of Armenians undercoated during a break in the showers :)
Horses of second batch of Armenians finished :)
First batch of Armenians still just sorted onto bases, need to get them based :!!
Nice looking 'old school' game FK 8)

Painting on the second batch of Armenians was held up slightly as I rebuilt half the leg of one of the archers :-w :-w
I'd noticed that there was some metal missing from the figure base when preparing the figure but hadn't realised how thin one of the legs was until I went to paint the trousers :o
I've now thickened it up with putty and filled in the base and painted the trousers so painting of the batch can now resume
While I was waiting for the putty to dry I based the first batch of Armenians :)
Based
90 Mounted

Seems you are getting a leg up on it now, Paul! :D
Liked the pics, Kitty. nice. :-bd
Main colours done on the second batch of Armenians :)
Bases of first batch touched up before heading off to work this morning :)
I managed to varnish the first batch of Armenians after work yesterday :)
But ran out of light before they were dry so I will hopefully get a chance for some pictures if the rain clears this afternoon as forecast :-w
I need to crack on with the second batch, more colours on the mounted then onto details :!!
I've finished all the colours on the second batch of Armenians and started detailing with the spear shafts :) :)
Now onto adding more details :!!
I went to take pictures of the first batch of Armenians and realised that my blue base cloth is at our regular gaming host's place on standby if an extra part of the North Atlantic is required #-o
So I used my desert base cloth instead ;)

I can't see anything wrong with those Phil. How come they've never been produced? I'm a great fan of "tabletop sprinkles." We once put on a game at Phalanx, 28mm set in the Indian Mutiny, and to keep kids interested we gave them a quiz sheet to spot elephants, a tiger, monkeys, dogs etc.

This made room for the last of the the Crusader figures; a couple of Turcopoles and 52 pilgrims :)
I managed to quickly undercoat them during a break in the weather :) :)
It is now raining again :(
Hopefully I will get to do a major basing session tomorrow :!!
He could always be a casualty
Bit of filler, splodge him in it, wading through muddy bit, job done ;)
Spot of modelling putty, splodge him in it, scrap of flock or sprinkle of static grass and he's walking through vegetation. So many options :)
Interesting suggestions, he is in the 'classic' archer firing pose so might look a bit strange as a casualty, I'll have a look :-\

I try to do something each day (not always possible), e.g. today I boxed up some figures in new storage boxes and finished off 24 bases of troops. Tomorrow I'll do something to the 6 bases waiting to be finished off and prime some more figures. Tuesday is out as I shall be playing a game away.
I try to do the same, DP. About two hours most mornings when the light and my eyesight are best. Currently working on Monmouth's 1685 army.
I find doing something each day helps maintain progress and enthusiasm ;) :)
I've been working from home for the last couple of weeks, since the earthquake, and this gives me back my commuting time, about 2 hours each day :)

A small (?) plus......Any idea when 'things will be back to normal'. Paul ?...Cant believe that happened a fortnight ago !
Cheers - Phil
Looks like we will be back in our building on Wednesday
Normal is probably a few months away, there are at least 3 buildings being demolished and probably over 30 that require repairs in the Wellington area. That is over 150km from the epicentre.
Kaikoura, the largeish town near the epicentre, has only one road partly open with the army trucking in supplies and one escorted convoy of civilian vehicles allowed out. Fuel is rationed, water is back on but needs to be boiled... Normal is a lot further away for them.
Blimey ! :o
Cheers - Phil
One of the 'smaller' slips (landslides), note circled digger for scale, about 60km north of Kaikoura

Holy funt! That's several thousand tons of rock.
Oh, my life ! :o :o :o
I presume the chap in the digger has got to dislodge all the stuff from the top, to bring it all down.......Then go down and clear the road itself !
What an enormous clean up, for just one road.
Cheers - Phil
Once he is finished up top
- abseilers will clear any large rocks with 'dynamite'
- a helicopter will 'rinse' the slope of smaller rocks
- a remote-controlled excavator will then cut into the slip
All this to open the road for six families, there are hundreds of slips like this.
Then there are the big ones blocking the main coast road

Note the main north south rail line on the coastal side of the road :(
Ouch!
Thanks for the vid, Paul. I generally have to research 75% of the cultural references on this forum (and even then....) :) :-bd
Only the Kiwis on the forum would have got that one ;)
I didn't get the pie one at all.
The saucy bar wench was fishing for laconic hero to invite her to the dance, with the promise of beer and pie. Instead he took both her tickets and went with his equally laconic dad who also likes pie and beer.
Laconic father and son studying a copper vat while on a brewery tour. Father to son, "It is the eighth wonder of the world and possibly the ninth" ;D

So looks like we'll be playing some DBA shortly then.....
Since Paul has been mentioning post-quake Kaikoura thought I would share our "effort" to help the towns local economy......Mrs Shy came downstairs last night and asked what our paypal account details were as she wanted to make a payment for some stuff she had bought online.....maybe she's going to order me some PM stuff for Christmas I thought (purhaps with a little too much optimism, though I have been a good boy this year...really ;) ).
But noooooo. As I might have mentioned previously my other half is quite a talented quilter and there is quite a well known quilting shop in Kaikoura who's business has suffered badly since access to the town is still very limited. Their solution has been to sell "quake packs" of material in an online sale. This news has rocketed through the local quilting community and so Mrs Shy just couldn't say no to just a few more bits of material......that sounds very familiar to most gamers doesn't it? :o
Anyway its a novel and innovative way of helping out the folks in the hardest hit part of the quake zone a little bit so all good 8)
Well done Mrs Shy :)
There have been a number of innovative approaches from the businesses in Kaikoura. Another example is a gift shop that partnered with a couple of similar shops in Christchurch. They are now selling the Kiakoura shop's stock that couldn't be delivered due to the quake and are sharing the profit.
Another fundraiser is a T-shirt featuring a quote from a guy who turned up on the day of the quake at a makeshift tourist campsite with hot food for them. When interviewed by TV and asked why he was doing it, "It's not hard to be kind, eh?"

Too true. Just a little wet and wild.
You seem to be cracking on with these Paul - which I suppose is the big bonus of the small DBA bases and armies.
It is indeed a real bonus of DBA the armies range from 55 to 174 figures

Belting work, Paul. :-bd

Great work Paul. Figures, especially the Turkomen, look great, if a bit hunched
Thanks all for the positive comments
FK, it really is the beginning of the end of this painting project. I'm onto the last of the six armies and two of the three batches of that army are nearing completion
The fun will really begin in the New Year when our group gets to play with them ;) :)
Again nice work!
I have been watching some youtube videos about DBA 3.0 a few days ago too. Looks like they would play OK.
On the other hand, i have been looking at videos of a dozen rulesets so chances of me getting it are slim ;D ;D ;D
I'm very pleased with how they play, they are a definite improvement over 2.2 IMHO, particularly for Medieval :)
I finally got round to putting together a report on my first Big Battle DBA 3.0 game that I played on the 23rd, http://www.pendrakenforum.co.uk/index.php/topic,13403.msg222599.html#msg222599 (http://www.pendrakenforum.co.uk/index.php/topic,13403.msg222599.html#msg222599)

Is there much difference in play to the old "original to me" "classic" 1.1 era rules?

Is there much difference in play to the old "original to me" "classic" 1.1 era rules?
Broadly similar but:
- Movement is in base widths and quite a bit faster
- Several Combat Outcomes have changed
- There is less geometric cheese due to changes in the contacting rules
- Several Foot types are now solid or fast giving different movement and combat outcomes
- Spear and solid Bow now get flank support further encouraging battle lines
- There is more information in the army lists
Overall I think it is a better game that feels similar to the original but adds more detail without adding too much
Fatimid Egyptian mounted and militia/volunteers; shield patterns, final dry brushing and figure bases done :)

Final dry brushing and figure bases to do
There will be a pause of about a week on this project as I am going down to Christchurch to catch up with my son :)
Have a great trip
Cheers Paul! I thought 2.x seemed to add much more than DBA actually needed, was wondering if 3 was a step sideways, back or forwards on that :D

I've cut out some felt I got a while ago in a range of area feature sizes. I need to dry brush them a bit and add some furrows to the plough and they will be ready to go.
I need to buy some more felt as I need some more variety is size and shape for the area features and I also need to do some river sections
I need to make some makers to define the type of area; rocky, scrub, boggy, oasis, ...
I also need to sort through my desert hills to find a few more sizes and shapes
Dammed inconvenient that I need to go back to work on Wednesday :(

As always very pleasing to the eye and as Mr. Lemmy said - you bypassed no details! - I am jealous.

This is still at the research stage but I have sorted all but about 8 of the 130 ships I'm thinking about ordering
The Sudan or ECW are still the likely candidates for my next 10mm projects but we need to test some rule sets :-\
Final batch of this project, Armenians and Berber foot, edges tidied up :)
Now I just need some varnishing weather :-w
Looking at the forecast that might be tomorrow evening, after work, or Saturday morning, the day of the game :-SS
Looking good (the photos on the last page!!)
I do like how you are presenting these figures - especially with their impressive moustaches!
I have some of the figures you have used in my fantasy arab army, so its good to see them painted for their intended armies.
The weather cooperated after work yesterday so I got the final batch of this project, Armenians and Berber foot, varnished :)
I also got the rulers I made varnished as well. All measurements are in base widths, 40mm, so a lot easier to have a custom ruler. They also have combat factors and a few other commonly used bIts on them
I ran out of daylight so pictures will have to wait until after the first multi-player game with them tonight
Measuring in base widths instead of inches sounds a bloody good idea. The awful kludge of metric basewidth for somethings combined with inches for others was a poor choice :D

Know the feeling Paul...The weather here is crazy this year - summer has consisted of two things - STRONG winds and rain.....neither are helpful when trying to spray 6mm microarmour or 1/3000 ships :d
Finally had a chance to study the battle reports, lovely pictures Paul.
The figures look great in action. Was struck by comparing your battle to the 40,000 figures at Borodino:

It is so much more effective to see a battle game (yours) played where terrain is given its proper scope (somthing I admit that is hard to do).
Both yours and Borodino use very sparse terrain features but yours are completely believable.
Looks like all your hard (and dedicated) work has paid off. :-bd
I didn't get a chance to photograph the final batch of this project, Armenians and Berber foot, before they were pressed into service.
After three weeks of hard service here they are
2x Armenians (Bw f or Bw s), 2x Berber spearmen (Sp)

Very nice work there.
Looking really really nice - looks the business & then some when you get two or three a side on table - I do like big battle DBA :)
Very nice looking, indeed. 8)
One element of Crusader Pilgrims was late arriving for the campaign, something about their leader goosing around ;)

Really like the colors you chose for the robes of the Armenians' and Berbers' robes and tunics.
Great looking stuff.
