Which models would You recommend to use for 1866 Grenzen? Was there a big difference between standard infantry and Grenz? At 10mm, should not be that different, especially after the army reform and making Grenz into Line Infantry. I know that Pendraken has separate models for Grenz. How do they look like (pose, etc.), compared to line? And one more question: what about the flags?
Hello and welcome.
Mollinary, Le Manchu, or Cameronian are your men for knowledge of Austrians in this period, and I'm sure they will along shortly.
Welcome from me, as well. :-h
Will (Mad Lemmey) has already mentioned some of our resident experts in this field....Like he says, I'm sure they'll be along shortly. :)
Cheers - Phil
Welcome Brotherdargon. Shame you're not Welsh because you could then be Brotherdragon. Anyway, I spent ages scanning the OOBs of the 1866 field armies and couldn't actually find any reference to Grenz troops. As they wore tight, Hungarian style trousers then I guess the Hungarian figures could be used. The actual Grenz figure (at least the one I have, which may be an old sculpt) is not a great figure. It has the very odd, long-legged running pose and is in tunic not greatcoat.
Welcome Dargon.
Enjoy the artistry, learn from the cleverness, and shake your head in wonder at the silliness.
Welcome!
A quick answer to your question. In 1866 there appear to be 14 Grenzer Regiments. They wore Hungarian style uniforms which, if they are wearing their greatcoats, should make them identical apart from the fact that all their belts were black. I can find only one in the North Army in Bohemia, the 13th, in Prochaska's Brigade of Archduke Ernst's 3rd Corps. On flags, as far as I can ascertain, they carried the same pattern flags as the Line regiments. A Leibfahne of 7 GrenzerGrenzer Infantry is illustrated in Darko PavlovIc' Osprey "The Austrian Army 1836-66 (1) Infantry" in the Men at Arms Series No 323. I can thoroughly recommend this book, and it's companion on the cavalry.
Hope this is helpful.

I have both Darko Pavlovic's book and it seems that for 1866 I will use the line infantry models. Have to check OOB's for Trautenau and Koniggratz. Thanks
Can anyone post photos of Grenzen models from Pendraken?
There are none at Trautenau.

Makes me wonder whether it's worth doing any grenzers for this period. I certainly won't be using the figure I have as it really is very poor compared with all the other figures in the range, both old and new.
Its only 10mm, do Hungarians in kittel, the brown tunic breaks up the monotony of greatgoat grey ... or for that matter the dove grey of the cuirassier's cloaks :D ... counting 5, 4, 3 ...

That would be the same dove grey that you've painted your Austrians in Kittel? ;)
