To the ladies and gentlemen of the forum (most specifically our former overlords) on the anniversary of our instituting divorce proceedings:

Best Regards,
Your American cousins   ;)

Well 30 years ago today I graduated from Uni :o. The time has flown by as it seems like yesterday.

I think it would be a nice gesture if you stopped using us as villains in all your cinematic productions.

Have you considered the French as a bete noir?

Otherwise we'll come and burn your churches down again, just like Mel Gibson insinuated we did.

I spent a very pleasant day in Fredericksburg, Va. in 2013 during the local 4th July celebrations. I managed to catch the end of the parade  #-o, strolled through the thriving street market that had sprung up overnight a short distance from our hotel and visited the sites of George Washington's childhood home and the Civil War battlefield. Later that evening I witnessed a very distant fire work display from one of the bridges over the Rappahannock before adjourning to a very nice ale house where I stopped the whole pub in its tracks by proposing a toast. "To the British!" said I.  It was great to see everyone's faces! Yes, I survived.

What!? They'd still be British if the French hadn't come and saved them! How could they be so ungrateful as to cast them as villains?

Well they've tried the Germans, the Russians, the Chinese, the Japanese, Asians (unspecified), the South Americans (unspecified), the Arabs (unspecified, but includes a wide swath of non-Arab countries) and the Koreans (North). The Ukranians also got a good run until they got invaded and became heroes.

They can't use the Irish or the Italians because of "the old country", so we're running short of new American enemies.

How about the Spanish? Dig up the old Phillipines conflict? "Remember the Maine, to hell with Spain!" Could use all those actors they used as South Americans to be evil Spaniards.

Thanks all for your heart-felt well wishes - I particularly liked the "gritted teeth" ones!  :)
@ Westy - Fredericksburg, you probably know, is the current home of HISTORICON - mid July is a great time to visit! Recommend you not propose your toast in South Boston (Mass), however!  :D

@ fsn - to continue the list - at one time or the other - Canadians, Mexicans, each other, space aliens, supernatural entities, earthquakes, big corporations, any character not portrayed by John, Bruce, Arnold, Will, Denzil, or Sylvester.....

It is raining buckets here (again) so probably no fireworks  :(

PS We can probably all agree Mel brings a very consistent hermeneutic to the study of History  :)
