Title: The Yalu River - an RJW Battle using BBB
Post by: Shedman on 23 June 2016, 09:41:55 PM
An AAR of the first major battle of the Russo-Japanese War – The Yalu River. This is a scenario for Bloody Big Battles using Pendraken's 10mm figures

The report is on my blog link (http://twomarshals.blogspot.co.uk/2016/06/yalu-river-1904-using-bloody-big-battles.html)

Good report and photos, Shedman!  :-bd

p.s. Has anyone else noticed how Chris Pringle turns up like Beetlejuice when a BBB AAR appears? (logged on as I write). Hi, Chris!  :)

An interesting scenario & AAR :)

My first thought when I saw the first part of the thread title was that FSN was agitating for 'modern' infantry ;D

Really good, thanks, Alan! RJW is looking very tempting indeed.

Hi Westie! Watching you, watching me, watching you ... OK, I admit it, I do take an interest in BBB, and I do spend an unhealthy amount of time online ...

"Agitating"? I don't see myself as an agitater, more a gentle former of opinion.  :P

Excellent report BTW!

Cracking, Alan. How did the one base units work? That seems against the thrust of how BBB is aimed, but I guess it's pretty "tweakable"...

The author, Pat Wingfield, has used the rules and modifiers in interesting ways

From the scenario
The Russians are not deployed in regiments but as single battalions or part batteries. Each separate stand is thrown for to move. The Russians fought on quite well to the bitter end in small groups. As such they are never spent and even single stands continue to function. (The Japanese function as normal)

The 3 Russian artillery bases have values of 0.1 (2 Guns),0.25 (6 Guns) & 0.5 (12 Guns) respectively which makes for some challenging Fire Point maths calculations

eg

WeaponStrength3"12"18"24"
Breechloading Arty19542
0.756.753.7531.5
0.54.52.521
0.252.251.25   10.25
0.10.90.50.40.2

I believe that he is working on Nanshan next  - 36000 Japanese against 3800 Russians - should be a good one

Alan

Ah, cool - I can see the why on the infantry then, and it looks like it actually worked out well. If you were actively manoeuvring the Russians I can imagine a dozen single stand "units" would be a right PITA as well as potentially exceptionally cheesy with getting flanks, using ZOCs to tie down the opposition and each one potentially sucking up excessive firepower each time to kill etc but that sounds like it went really well.

The arty looks a pain though, did the Russian two gun sections or even six gun sections have that great an effect on the battle IRL? Although having a table to pre-work the factors out probably helps...

The yellow, green and red :) are a throw back to when I used to do FOG Ancients tournaments.  They were part of my psychological warfare  against my opponent - they were the "I find it amusing that you've disordered/shaken/broken my unit"  - others were going to the toilet when I had one unit left to move, sneezing over the table without covering my mouth and humming Abba's Money, money ,money

I jest of course.

For BBB the yellow ones are Disrupted, Green is low on ammo and Red is Spent

I think that they blend in quite well

Alan
