is it safe to use Halfords Matt White car paint to undercoat these models ?, or will it cause damage to the models

Morning

I haven't painted Shapeways stuff personally but have seen a few threads on TMP etc that suggest that any Shapeways models be well cleaned with soapy water to remove any impurities on them prior to painting.

It may require more than one coat of primer depending on what exactly the material is they are made from. Can't comment on the car paint.

Not sure about the Halfords stuff as I prime mine with Army Painter, but give them a good wash first, which is a good thing to do with any models to be honest.  They'll take any acrylic paint without a problem.

You absolutely do need to give them a thorough clean before painting. There's always some residue in the detail, in fact sometimes there's a dust so fine it's almost liquid that completely fills up crevices!
