Title: ARRRGGHHH - Figures going AWOL
Post by: Orcs on 08 June 2016, 10:37:35 PM
I was basing some 15mm Figures for AK47 today and managed to drop one on the floor in my den.  Can I find it!!  I looked for ages running my hands over the carpet, using my painting lamp to aid looking under the table and NOTHING.

No idea where the pesky figure went .

Check the area where the carpet meets the table leg or cabinet if you have one nearby.  That's where mine seem to land (or your pants cuff).

Done all that.  The carpet is a pale lilac ( it came with the house) , the figure painted in Olive green, so it should show up well.

Look for something else, you won't find the thing you're looking for but that figure will pop out of nowhere :)

Or check whether one of your cats, dogs, or children is coughing uncomfortably.

Walk around in bare feet. If you react quickly enough damage to foot and figure will be minimized.
Also - make sure it hasn't already stuck to the bottom of someone's shoe.
Failing all that, make a small dowsing rod out of sprue or flash. ( post a picture of this if you do :D)

Empathize with you - there is a small colony of the little dropped b*****ds lurking somewhere in my house.

They're lurking in the walls! I'm sure there's a crowd of them populating the kingdom of lost things amongst the left socks. Occasionally they morph into wire coat hangers and appear in random wardrobes.

:) :) :)

What I don't get with dropped figures, is how far the little sods go! Alternatively they hide right where you first looked, but are somehow camouflaged so that you can['t find them for days but were right where they dropped.

Although I have managed to drop them into boots or folds of clothing etc and then find them hours later when getting ready for bed or putting coat on etc.

Less extreme, but I have a unit of Turkoman LC who see service with both the Moghuls and the Ottomans, and they're always in the wrong box.

I am one of those annoying people who won't admit defeat for ages. First off I will check all the obvious places around my chair, thenk the less obvious places -underneath the castors on my painting chair, around the sides of the tool box in the footwell of my painting desk, then around the outside of the desk near the wall. If that doesn't find the little chap then, for some obsessive reason that I can't explain I'll do it all again. Then I widen the search until I find it.

Mind you I had a box of 15mm ACW figures somewhere in the loft that was my study and painting area of my old gaff. I knew I had it and spent a good couple of years -on and off- looking for it. I knew the shape, colour and size of the box but couldn't find it. The one day I was sitting at my computer and just happened to look up at the shelf above. Peeking out from underneath a hanging piece of paper was the corner of the box! The trouble was that when I finally found it, I didn't fancy ACW any more>

I once lost a just started figure (plain 10mm dolly) from the desk top......
Heard it hit the floor to my right.

Looked down....No sign at all.
Did everything everyone's already mentioned.....Still no sign.

WEEKS later.....For some reason I had to pull out the bottom right hand drawer, which I always leave very slightly open, anyway
There it was, balanced on the strut, between the two runners for the drawer.

It had hit the carpet, bounced slightly forward, and come to rest on that crosspiece.....effectively under the drawer
The little sods can get ANYWHERE.  ;D ;D ;D

Cheers - Phil

Take the vacuum cleaner, pull a sock halfway over the pipe and vacuum. If its there it will be in the sock.

You think this is bad - my mate can't find an entire 10mm French SYW army.

My parents used to have fluffy carpets.

You learn these sort of things when loing bits on fluffy carpets.

Should mention that you are supposed to tape the part of the sock that's outside the tube to the tube, otherwise the sock just goes straight in  ;D

Once had a dropped figure slip down inside of a trouser pocket. I couldn't have done it even if I'd tried.

Haven't read it but the description seems to suggest a possible explaination of where our little guys go.  :)
The link was missing a backslash so put one in.  ;)

This just happened yesterday afternoon. I was finishing a command group (three mounted OG figs). Tapping off excess flock (upside down over a trash can) the principle rider came loose from his horse! As the trash can was full, a systematic dig resulted with each piece of trash set aside on wrapping paper - no little guy! SO - in reverse order - started examining each piece as I put it back. Near the end, while unfolding a piece of crumpled paper - he appeared! - and dove (or dived  :) ) back in to the can!

Repeat above - found him again - set him aside - put trash away. While placing him back on horse - noticed that he had a missing arm!
(Yes he was a modified figure - I assemble with superglue for quick attachment - followed by gel a bit later to get a hard set - most have originally forgot the second step)

Sorry for the long story but I wished to share my trauma  :)

Reminds me of the old story about the Irish bricklayer writing the note to his boss about why he is missing work.
