Title: "Taking the Pict!"
Post by: Duke Speedy of Leighton on 30 May 2016, 12:30:45 AM
Started my Picts at long last.
Too many other big projects over the last year. So time for another one!  =O
Or this is as far as I got before I ran out of bases!!!
(http://i214.photobucket.com/albums/cc94/madlemmey/Picts/FE2BEA7D-9198-4396-9153-9AE02940FA21_zpsrixmimtu.jpg) (http://s214.photobucket.com/user/madlemmey/media/Picts/FE2BEA7D-9198-4396-9153-9AE02940FA21_zpsrixmimtu.jpg.html)
Seven bases of cavalry, sixteen bases of spears, four of javelins, twelve bases of skirmishing archers. Not sure how this lot will turn out, but it will be fun. Did I ever mention I can't stand painting irregulars... D'oh!

I paid for em, about time I did something with em!

So, you base them, and then you paint 'em?

How does that work?

Fan it has always worked just fine, see all of my Franco-Prussian stuff! ;)

I can't paint round corners!

Look at those cavalry bottom left. How do you get to the boots/saddle cloths?

I can't paint straight on.

00 brush and ink washes are my friend!
Also, on a 30mm base there is quite a lot of space to manoeuvre.
And about 1/10 figures fall off due to glue errors, that always gives you more space. ;D

While I think about it, anyone got any suggestions what to use as Attacoti. Variously described as baked berserker types or chain mail clad uber nutters...

Now, you know I'm going to have to try this.  :D

I probably won't show the results on the forum.

Good to see you start on the Picts, I have a whole army bag to do at some point.
For the Attacoti you could use some of the fantasy barbarians or maybe Viking berserkers.

If the Attacotti are "baked berserkers" would those rare beings who were twice as hard as them be known as the "Biscotti"?

When I was basing minis up for Impetus I based them first - my problem wasn't so much the painting but the base texturing...

Oh dear, have you forgotten again?

Chain Mail - a form of armour similar to but different from Banded Mail, Plate Mail, Scale Mail, Ring Mail and the like.

Memory is such a tricky thing as one gets older ;)

That must be why none of my medieval friends recognise the word.

Very, very old indeed if they are medieval. No wonder their memories are so shoddy.  ;)

No - in Kitty's case it's a matter of attitude, not age. Mr Lewis on the other hand ....

Brown and black lines on 'not plaid' tonight, rest when I get home.
High Elves will be finished tonight! ;D

Looking forward to seeing the 'not plaid' develop, are you using paint or pens to do the lines?
Title: Re: "Taking the Pict!"

Paint.
00 that's about to three bristles!
Just debating whether to woad them up now! ;D
Title: Re: "Taking the Pict!"
Post by: paulr on 06 August 2016, 12:47:18 AM
I suspect it would be very hard to do convincing woad :-\

I found the 'war paint' on my Native Americans very challenging and people expect to see it and it was multi-coloured which adds to how convincing it looks

I used to have a Sioux force. I remember the warpaint as some of the most enjoyable painting I've ever done. Sadly, the games were a bit repetitive.

Got to admit, they are lovely figures to sand and pva as only one figure has a cloak touching the deck.
Thank you Techno.
