Title: "Medieval" fighting
Post by: Luddite on 25 May 2016, 11:16:10 AM
And interesting glimpse into the true brutality and horror of a Medieval battle?

Comparatively tame by comparison with the real thing.

Food for thought right enough.

A few months back I watched an interesting documentary about a British team going to France for an event like this. At least one of them had to drop out as he broke his arm in a scrap. Makes me think that maybe bludgeoning an opponent to the ground was more prevalent than stabbing. Must have been exhausting though whatever they did.

Wow that's great. Sort of cage fighting for nerds.   :)

Thanks for putting it up.

I get that they're wearing padding, but geez!  They weren't holding back there, some of those hits were brutal.  At one point, one guy's axe lodged in the wooden fence, so they can't have been completely blunt blades.

I know one of the guys that used to fight with Team GB and the weaponry is the same as what we use in our normal reenactments which is a 2-3mm rounded edge. However most swords have things like fullers in them, most of that stuff looks like it's an iron bar that's been shaped to look vaguely like a weapon.

Agree. Interestingly, this gives me an impression of how the climax of a feud between Clan Chattan and Clan Kay might have looked like in 1396 when Robert III of Scotland, his Court and some foreign visitors gathered to watch 30 champions from each clan, battle it out on the North Inch (island) of the Tay at Perth. So brutal was the combat that only one of Clan Kay survived death or injury (and this by leaping into the River Tay) and eleven of Clan Chattan.

Obviously, the blood and the gore is missing (thankfully) but viewing the above with the images below is possibly as near as you will get(?)(once again, thankfully) ....

Wouldn't those halberds have butt-spikes?

Westie - I watched some of the game video. Was puzzled why the defenders left the gate open?
