Title: Miniaturised Kings of War with 1/4 dimensions, using 10mm Pendraken miniatures
Post by: lehcyfer on 07 May 2016, 11:53:07 AM
I like to play big battles on small areas, and as in Kings of War (KoW) we don't take single miniatures out of units as casualties, the system is easily convertable to smaller scales with miniatures fixed to bases.

KoW normally uses 28mm miniatures, so changing dimensions to 1/4 we get 7mm, but I prefer 10mm as "golden scale", where one can see from tabletop distance what miniatures are in a unit - so I'll use 10mm Pendraken as they are affordable and in great variety.

Bases for the units will be cut out from 1mm steel sheet, and the playing area will be magnetic sheet (like in fridge magnets). Playing area 6x4 feet translates to 1,5x1 feet (1/4 dimensions, 1/16 area) - I plan to make a folding flat box, like in chess to store everything inside.

As my first army I've chosen Undead, as they are easiest to paint ;)

Cleaned up miniatures are glued in a row on wooden tongue depressors with a strip of doublesided adhesive tape, and sprayed matt black.

They are drybrushed white, then GW Bleached Bone, then details are painted as needed, mostly with washes, then everything is covered with GW Agrax Earthshade wash

Painted miniatures bases are cut down to enable tight fit on bases - I want them to look like proper units - then glued with super glue to metal bases that I cut out of sheet using dremel with cutting wheel

Nice first post, lehcyfer. Not really into Fantasy - except maybe Lord of the Rings ..... Game of Thrones .... (jings! maybe I am?) - but these Undead paint up really well. Like the 'crowded' look also - makes each base look like a force to be contended with.  :-bd

Those skellies look really good - are they the new warband sculpts? I like the painting too, they look really crisp, and the limited palette ties them together.

We played lots of KoW with 10mm figures, but kind of wen the other way, and used the 28mm unit sizes and distances, and just had loads of figures in a unit.

But I do like the idea of the 1/4 scale version, and that you have the freedom to start from scratch with basing, we were very constrained by having hordes of 40x20mm based stuff.  Trimming the bases to get loads of figures works well too.

Have you tried basing any horses yet? Your troop bases look quite shallow, and I know cavalry ones are a bit deeper, but it might be tricker getting horses on them?

Thanks for good words. It's always good to start with something interesting :)

@fred. - I bought warband army (because of cheaper) plus some bits and pieces. Are you sure that sculpts are different? I thought it was just a question of packaging...
I'll cover horses in this post ;)

So for the next models I took cavalry and zombies (cavalry first)

Really liking the look of this army.

Quite a few of the fantasy ranges have been / are being updated following the release of warband. One of the most obvious differences is that the bows are now a good size rather than the stubby little things they used to be, there are also more poses and new command and wizard figures. So its more a difference between the old figures and the new Warband figures, rather than the figures packaged as Warband and buying separate packs.

I like that you like them ;)

@fred. I had hard time to decide what to buy as there is precious little visual info on the shop pages - many positions lack photos which I find hard to understand. I didn't bought older undead as there was no photos (I bet Pendraken loses lots of customers who don't want to pay for a cat in a bag) and I assumed the warband items are just repackaged older undead - and there were photos in warband undead section.
I'll show what I have bought and what was inside of packages (I know the contents is somewhat randomized, but such list is a good overview)

I can't enter shop page - there is some kind of server error, so I can't doublecheck names...

First - almost everything from warband undead section: army deal (a package of several warband items - don't remember which so I list all items separated) and additional warband items:

3x Foot warriors (FAN-UND1)
- 12pcs with bludgeons (4 positions, 2pcs with a shield)

- 34 swords (10 pos., 17 shields)

Second - additionally several items from fantasy accessories section (there were pictures so I could choose):

Ghouls (AC32) - 10 pcs. (3 armed)

That's all I bought for undead - twice as much as I needed - this will be a gigantic KoW undead army, and I still could buy some more ;)

I'll show also some more pictures from painting spearmen:

I hope I didn't scared you away with pictures of Pendraken skellies with no paint whatsoever ;)
(why so many pictures in the shop are inexistent? No idea...)

Continuation of painting undead army:

Painted the dragon and his passenger - the commander figure with spear (cut off the base, unattached spear from his leg, spread his legs, changed position of body and hand with spear)

Pendraken are gradually adding photos of their ranges but with thousands of figures it is going to take a while before the last of them is done.

Love the conversion of the dragon!

Lehcyfer,
Just had a chance to look through all your pics - superb close-ups!  Like your painting work also. Not much into fantasy wargaming but between Game of Thrones and Bruce Campbell's Army of Darkness I have a great appreciation for the armies of the dead. Look forward to seeing more of your work.

Had some time and painted catapults. Made bases as small as possible, but still they're too large for standard KoW artillery base. Fortunately larger bases are allowed as long as there is standard base width marked on front - to measure the range from.

Painted:

Really look good so far.  I bought the Undead Warband starter pack a while back, so it's nice to get a look at what all I'll be painting!  I have to finish the Dwarves first though.
