and now its Terry Nutkins! Who's next?
He died in 2012!
http://www.mirror.co.uk/3am/celebrity-news/terry-nutkins-died-2012-fans-7828445
When I used to watch The Really Wild Show with the kids back in the day I always imagined Terry Nutkins as a cuddly little squirrel. What i felt about Michaela Strachan I had better keep to myself.
Yeah - for some reason Terry's death bubbled to the top of the internet.
It isn't an unusual year- there are just a couple of reasons.
1) There are more famous people - more TV, more films, more musicians, more celebrity in general.
2) we are the first internet generation and deaths get shared quicker, with more grief. All the people we grew up with are now getting old - some almost as old as Techno.
Thank you. =)
Cheers - Phil. ;)

Butterflies - both Carla Lane and Mohammed Ali.
I was discussing Ali's visit to Upper Hutt in 1979 with the guys over last night's game.
Yes, the Greatest really did visit little Upper Hutt :o
He was invited by a local boxing coach who had taken an amateur team to the US to fight an amateur team supported by Ali.
They well remembered him talking to a local High School assembly. Two good questions with great answers...

A. My first marriage

I liked the story his biographer told. (Which apparently was a favourite of the man himself.)

Was walking up The Bridges in Edinburgh a few years back not paying too much attention to the world when an American stopped me and asked directions to a nearby hotel. I did the usual pointing and waving hands type directions then turned back to focus on the guy to make sure he'd understood my directions and was gobsmacked to find myself talking to Jerry Doyle. Despite my best intentions I then turned into the sort of incoherent, rambling, star struck fan I swore I'd never be. He was really great and spent a few minutes talking about sci-fi in general and Bab5 in particular before sauntering off to his hotel.
Being equally suave and sophisticated ... I walked into a rubbish bin and would have gone nose first into the pavement if a lady hadn't grabbed me by the arm. =) :-[ :-[ :-[

Shame. We have a dwindling number of these heroes.
"O dark dark dark. They all go into the dark,
The vacant interstellar spaces, the vacant into the vacant,
The captains, merchant bankers, eminent men of letters,
The generous patrons of art, the statesmen and the rulers,
Distinguished civil servants, chairmen of many committees,
Industrial lords and petty contractors, all go into the dark,
And dark the Sun and Moon, and the Almanach de Gotha
And the Stock Exchange Gazette, the Directory of Directors,
And cold the sense and lost the motive of action.
And we all go with them, into the silent funeral ... " - T.S. Eliot "East Coker"
And death shall have no dominion.
Dead man naked they shall be one
With the man in the wind and the west moon;
When their bones are picked clean and the clean bones gone,
They shall have stars at elbow and foot;
Though they go mad they shall be sane,
Though they sink through the sea they shall rise again;
Though lovers be lost love shall not;
And death shall have no dominion.
And death shall have no dominion.
Under the windings of the sea
They lying long shall not die windily;
Twisting on racks when sinews give way,
Strapped to a wheel, yet they shall not break;
Faith in their hands shall snap in two,
And the unicorn evils run them through;
Split all ends up they shan't crack;
And death shall have no dominion.
And death shall have no dominion.
No more may gulls cry at their ears
Or waves break loud on the seashores;
Where blew a flower may a flower no more
Lift its head to the blows of the rain;
Though they be mad and dead as nails,
Heads of the characters hammer through daisies;
Break in the sun till the sun breaks down,
And death shall have no dominion.
(Far better poet, imffho)

It will not last the night;
But ah, my foes,

That's the version I was originally taught though I believe the proper first line is "My candle burns at both ends" - I prefer the version I first heard.

Which book? Why? When? How?
Yeah. What one? Highway Holocaust? The Fall of Blood Mountain? Eh? Eh?
I'll have to find it.....it was number 5 (or 6) I think. Pretty sure it's in the bookcase somewhere
Joe stayed with me and Mrs T for a couple of nights, when he was doing some book signings relatively locally, when we lived in Notts.
Good fun...He brought his shotgun(s) round and took me clay pigeon shooting at a place not too distant from Sherwood forest......
I was complete poop at it.....But it was just SO much fun.
I did end up with a very sore collar bone 'cos I wasn't holding the gun properly, and it kept recoiling and giving me a biff, each time I fired it.
I knew Joe from the days he wrote the forerunner of 'Eavy Metal in White Dwarf. (Tabletop Heroes ?).....and he used quite a lot of the photo's I sent in.

Hah.....They were pretty safe from my efforts. X_X
And shooting at the clays they class as 'rabbits', (which they just run across the turf on their edges.....)

I found it....."The claws of Helgedad". (I'll send you a pic of the page.....Just to prove it, Westie. ;))
Anecdotes, Nobby ?......I've got dozens of them.
My favourite being the one of Tony Ackland break-dancing, in our garden in Notts, because he'd put his jacket on.......with a live, young, gray squirrel wrapped in said jacket.
The squirrel objected slightly to this affront to its dignity.
I was only grateful Tony started twitching in the garden......and not while I was driving him home, that afternoon.

Typical.....I can answer that one.
One pair is on the knife block, in the kitchen.
Another pair is in a pot in the big barn......ready to open bags of corn, barley, hayledge, dog 'nibs'....or whatever.
Next pair is in the MIL's pill container, to chop up the appropriate numbers of her pills for the day.....
Finally a pair of nail scissors on my desk.

2016
A year that feels like the montage of TV news footage at the start of a zombie apocalypse movie...
And now Manuel has been hit with a very big spoon. Gave us lots of laughs fella. :( ;D
Is there any possible response but - "que?"
Only 12 episodes, but what episodes!
What a legacy he has left for us. My wife loves Fawlty Towers , as do I, and will watch some episodes tonight in honour of his memory.
Very sad news ! :(

He was a very funny man but also seemed to be a real gentleman.
Indeed.

Yes. I believe he was portrayed by Ed Harris in

Although I was aware of him as a DJ, it was more Home Truths on Radio 4 that was the getting to know him thing for me.
(Hopefully) a little something to bring a smile to your face, Mitch Benn's tribute:
