Title: Star Iron!
Post by: Heedless Horseman on 04 April 2016, 11:01:32 PM
'At last, the Aged Smith was prepared. This would be the culmination of a lifetime's hard-garnered skill and lore. This would be his legacy to the Land...to the Kingdom! A Sword! A Sword so keen that mail would part at a stroke. So strong that lesser blades would shatter against its valiant wielder's might! A sword for Hero Tales! A Sword for a King! A Sword of Power!
Star Iron! Blessed by the Last Druid...the fallen Star would be forged into Legend!'
B****r!
He should have Googled 'Lawrencite Disease'.
The fabled Sword of Heroes might be the Fantasy equivalent of a paintball gun.
Thank you TMP!   :'(

Find a tungsten bar that has seen the light of seventy-five full moons and an iron horse shoe worn by a black mare - preform a triple binding - using the sigilry: 5()@}##r;2. If this does not work apply RapidFix over the entire surface while muttering, "this d__n well better work!!!"
(Note: the three exclamation points are important and not just for show) Then hit with UV light.
I learned most of this at TMP - hope it helps

Is the acronym TMP most likely to be:

a) The Magic Page
b) Testing Magical Properties
c) This Mightn't Pan-out
d) The Magician Panicked
e) Some of the above
f) None of the above

Roy I am definitely going with "a"  :)

I'd love to know what this is in context to.  8-}

Anybody care to explain this to an old duffer/numpty.
It's right over the top of my head. (Nothing new there, then.) ;)

Cheers - Phil

Headless is perhaps posing a conundrum from "The Iron Druid Chronicles" (I can't be sure) and I proposed a solution in the form of what might be found in "The Kingkiller Chronicles".  The second solution comes from the TMP we are MOST familiar with - and it was a right good suggestion!

Tease More Penquins is my new favorite.

Actually...this was for  fans of Fantasy and 'Dark Age' fiction. I had always thought that a sword forged from Meteoritic iron just might have had some superior qualities due to other elements also present...(I am no metallurgist!)...and authors certainly use 'Star Iron' for Heroic weaponry again and again!   =)

Along comes TMP with an article about a 'top-end' gun maker proposing to make fancy pistols from a meteorite...and guys 'in the know' point out that meteorites frequently contain something which causes the iron to turn to 'gloop'! This effect has become known as 'Lawrencite Disease'. Googled it...and this seems to be a real condition which really annoys rock collectors...a bit like 'lead rot' worries sane people.   :o

So...now, whenever I will read something along the lines of...'Viper fast, he drew 'Demon Bane', steel bright as the star's falling!'...I will be thinking..."It's gonna Droop! Yep! Definite wilt on there!"    ;)   :'(

My understanding was that this affects rock samples due to the presence of chemicals that cause the sample to degrade and that, despite the name, that it seems unlikely that lawrencite itself is actually to blame.

Since meteoric iron would presumably undergo the same roasting and smelting process as "normal" iron I imagine it would be a problem for geologists but not smiths.

I'm sure that a lump of meteoric iron that plunged to earth like fallen Lucifer himself, forged in the fires of a semi-active volcano, imbued with magic by the most ancient of mages, wrought with runes and sigils by the most cunning of dwarven forgemasters and bladesmiths into a blade so keen that the wind that passes over it's edge bleeds, as is the only proper way to create such an artefact in Sword & Sorcery fiction, is not going to fall apart like some grotty geological specimen!  :)

(or not)

Only other (forum friendly) thing that came into my mind was what the actors might have been told on All Creatures Great & Small (Vet drama set in 1930-40s Yorkshire) on what to do before beginning calfing procedure with their hand and arm.
