My first stand of 10mm Imperial Romans, really enjoyed painting these found it quite easy, Shields are a bit rough but think I will get plenty of practice as I complete my starter army. C&C welcome :)

They are lovely and I think the shield is a good representation - I am going through a big basing dilema at the moment, so I am presently base obsessed - I was thinking that these bases might look better with an additional figure on them per rank to give them a tighter look - thoughts?

Yes, I agree with Norm. Nothing wrong with the design, the neatness will come with practice - as you've hinted at.

For me, I'm not a fan of close-packed basing. So I'd base mine as Spiers101 has. But that's just personal preference.
I acknowledge the argument of shoulder to shoulder positioning when depicting close order infantry, but I just find densely populated unit bases look like a mass blob of troops from an arms length and I don't like the visual. But, that's, again, personal preference, and if there was some sort of basing guidelines for close order infantry I'd be in the wrong.

My 1859 armies have 10 figures per base - I need another 10 bases for my Austrian army - that's another 100 figures to paint up
I also made the mistake of doing this when I started my WSS project - 12 figures per base - I've only ever done the 1 unit

I must admit that I do like the packed look when it's historically justified. Started my SYW with 6 per base, but now go 8. No leeway with the Old Glory figures as they come in strips of 5, so they are 10 to the base. It certainly gives the right look to C18th linear warfare. I also pack ancient pike figures tightly. The Romans are a bit different though because it depends on what they are doing. They must have needed abit of elbow room to throw the pilum, but were very close when going in with the sword, so I suppose Romans throwing pilum would be a little more spread out, but using the sword closer together to block the enemy from getting between soldiers.

On the subject of basing I tried it with 2 ranks of four and whilst preferable to my wallet the figures looked too spaced out, for my opposing Ancient Briton army I will have 5 on a base in two ranks but 2 bases deep to give 4 ranks overall for a warband.
Seams reasonable to me! 8)
