Title: What to use for SYW Spanish
Post by: lekw on 01 April 2016, 04:43:00 PM

I am thinking of expanding a bit to the War of Austrian Succession in Italy. Has anyone tried this project? Any thoughts on what figures I can use for Spanish?

Sorry if it was asked before but I could not find in in the archive.

There was some discussion of this a while back but I couldn't find it on a quick look. I have been (slowly) working on figures for the WAS in Italy, including Spanish.

I went for using Austrians because Spanish grenadiers have fur hats like them but that means painting over the lapels. I also think that French would be OK. The Spanish have fairly standard uniforms so it should be easy to paint most figures. The main exception is the Miqueletes which are mountain/light infantry. I haven't done these yet, and there are usually not many, but I am  thinking that I will try using some Marlburian figures and a little customizing - with the cloak.

Not familiar with miqueletes, but if they are cloaked maybe Austrian grenzers or Russian pandours with some greenstuff conversion work.

Here are Miqueletes - http://www.kronoskaf.com/syw/index.php?title=Migueletes_Catalanes

This is a regular but they were often irregular so appearance would vary.

Based on that picture I think I would go with the Russian pandour with head converted to tricorn or more casual headscarf. Cloak can be fashioned with greenstuff, as it seems much smaller than the cloak on the grenzer figures.

Yes maybe - I haven't seriously looked at it. But I would probably go for something in a tricorne and cut it down, rather than build it up. Actually thinking about it maybe Russians in summer uniform, waistcoat only, might be good. I have never seen these, if you have what do you think?

Ok I have looked further and the 'cloak' is actually the coat worn as a kind of cloak. Here is a better picture - (http://www.wfgamers.org.uk/resources/C18/miquelete.jpg)

This is from the WSS but they were similar in the WAS.

I have Russians in summer uniform. I think they would work well with some greenstuff fashioned over the left shoulder.

Follow up question; how to distinguish Spanish from Austrians? I know the flags but since I will be using Austrian infantry for both line troops and both have mostly white coats? Anyone have any hints suggestions of what they did?

The Austrians wore a sprig of oak leaves in the hat.

Oak leaf, small but will have to do. I used a darker shade of white/grey on my WSS French to distinguish from the Imperialists. Maybe a good idea as well. Thanks all!!!
