Title: Hi From NW England
Post by: CarlLeyland on 30 March 2016, 07:49:47 PM
Hi,

My name is Carl and I live in the north west of England, I have been wargaming for around 40 years.

Recently I decided to have a go at 10mm so ordered some Late Romans just to see if I can paint them. 28MM is great but they take a long time to paint and a lot of room on the shelf.

I am looking forward to seeing what you Chaps do in this scale and what rulesets you use.

Thanks.

Carl

Thanks Chaps, it's a long time since I was a cadet! Just reading through the forum and it seems some people skirmish in 10MM? Wow!

Also what rules would be best for 1900-1930's? Pretty much where the Black Powder set ends?

Hi Carl and welcome aboard.

The Late Roman range is one of my favourite Pendraken ranges and what some people here can do with them is either inspirational or downright depressing, depending on your point of view :)

As to painting them yourself and rules to use, I'd say the main things to remember are that

a) you're going for mass effect rather than individual brilliance - less detail required, so faster to paint.

b) The smaller areas of colour will look darker than so slightly lighter colours than you'd use on 28mms is a good idea.

c) The forum is friendly and helpful, don't be afraid to ask questions.

d) The forum is weird and wacky, don't let the apparent (or perhaps sometimes actual) lunacy put you off. The personal hobby-horses and in-jokes usually become apparent quite quickly. Feel free to join in!

e) There are probably more sets of rules being used than members of the forum! Members are usually pretty vocal about likes and dislikes but let me start the ball rolling by suggesting DBA as a simple rules, small armies, limited space require rule set. Warmaster Ancients is another of my favourites and is based on GW's Warmaster Fantasy Rules.

Carl

Welcome.

I would do one or two things.

Find out which ruleset is used by your local wargamers, if you have any?

Look at Hail Caesar, they work with any scale or size of figures, it is the unit base size that is important. Hail Caesar is a successor to Warmaster Ancients  which is a successor to Warmaster. They all work.

Thanks again for the tips Chaps! I was intending to base the Romans for DBA....I saw a pic or two on the web and thought they would give me a good idea of how 10mil would paint up.

Having looked at this forum I now realise that practically every period is covered.....even a motorcycle in the WW1 section. A motorcycle!

I will certainly try to keep my colours a shade lighter than normal and as you  say go for the group look.

Thanks.

A bit like this with less fussy detail.

Hi Carl,

Welcome to the forum.

As Ithoriel says the standard of painting of some of the members is impressive to say the least.  I swear they have a "Shrinking machine" and paint 28mms which they then shrink down to 10mm. But it is the overall effect to go for.

Rules for 1900-1930.   I have used both Blitzkrieg commander for bigger battles and Chain of command for skirmish in this period and scale.  One of our club demo games this year is the Balkan wars (admittedly in 28mm) using Chain of Command. They have been tweaked very slightly to fit in with the time period.
Blitzkrieg commander also works well for bigger battles in WW1 and A Very British Civil War.

We use multiple figure bases playing Chain of Command in 10mm and just mark casualties.

Also for this scale we use

Warmaster in all its forms
Black Powder
Honours of war
Fire and Fury
Dux Belloram

Most rules seem to work just by changing distances from inches to cm and a couple of tweaks to allow for bigger battles

I have Early Imperial romans and used VVV shield transfers on all 500 shields. Initially I was going to only do the front row, but just got carried away  :)

Thanks for the information Mr Orcs. I have Black Powder and DBA which should cover my needs for now though I will certainly research the sets you mentioned for the early 20th century.

The standard of painting here is very high indeed, great for inspiration and for reference

Welcome to the asylum forum. 1900-1930s eh, a man after my own pulp laden heart (my doctor can confirm my medical state). You haven't said where or what scale game (skirmish or big battle?) you'd like to play.

Rules to look at:-

Red Actions - A game of company level battles and ambushes in the Russian Civil War Period.  http://freewargamesrules.wikia.com/wiki/Red_Actions (http://freewargamesrules.wikia.com/wiki/Red_Actions)
Beyond The River Don - A campaign game that takes maybe 30 minutes to create from scratch, with limitless scenarios, a different map each and every time, and has counters representing the following armies and their equipment: Reds, Whites, Greens, Estonians, Latvians, Finns, Lithuanians, Ukrainians, Poles, Armenians, Turks, French, Greeks, Japanese, American, British Empire and Freikorps. To go with Red Actions http://freewargamesrules.wikia.com/wiki/Beyond_The_River_Don (http://freewargamesrules.wikia.com/wiki/Beyond_The_River_Don)

I'm currently having fun with 'Setting the East Ablaze' using stands as substitutes for single figures. It's an improved version of Contemptible Little Armies. If you do a search on "setting the east ablaze" wargame rules you can find an early copy to playtest.

I've previously used an 'up-perioded' version of Science vs Pluck as well

Also a flip through these can sometimes turn up gems - http://freewargamesrules.wikia.com/wiki/Category:Early_20th_Century (http://freewargamesrules.wikia.com/wiki/Category:Early_20th_Century)

Let us know if you need any more info.

Don't I know that feeling! But rank here has no discernible privilege - it is a wounderous silly place, with folks interested (and highly knowledgeable) in - well - just about everything! So welcome to the forum 1800Carl!  Consider that those sixty 10mm's have the surface area of maybe 7 28mm's and get stuck in when they arrive!

Oh - you may receive a welcome from an entity calling itself "fsn" - my advice - embrace the horror! :D

Are my 10mm Later Romans, great range! You will love them!
60 is nothing, if you don't try to paint individually!
Pop down to Costa/Starbucks/MaccyDs, help yourself to a few coffee stirrers, glue 10 or so along the stirrer.
But I do batches of 100 at a time these days! :)

Good morning Mr Leyland, and welcome to the forum.

There are many erudite and knowledgeable people here who as they have already demonstrated are quite capable of giving you a seemingly well reasoned response to your queries. It is true that most of them have reasonably lucid moments but my advice would be to take nothing at face value. One trick I have noted is that they remodel Pendraken miniatures in 54mm or even larger, then paint them which is a feat so simple that an 8 year old child wearing an eye patch and with its major muscle groups linked to a apparatus designed to deliver small electric shocks at random intervals (happy days) could still make a reasonable fist of it. These cunning members then photograph these 54mm creations and pass them off as 10mm. It's the only logical explanation.

You've just missed the annual painting competition. There's a few 54mm (and one I think may actually be a full size mannequin) that are winners, and that and the obvious bias within the judging panel towards those that they describe as having "talent" makes it a foregone conclusion about the winners, but there is a veneer of bonhomie that frankly is as brittle as the rictus grin on the "Little Miss Cute Oregon" runner up - there's a four year old with a budding personality disorder.

Anyway, welcome. I've been 10mm for about 4 years, and have everything from ancient Greeks to SF. No chariot armies though. Pendraken don't do chariot armies. Being of a mathematical bent, I compared the market and Pendraken seemed to be the best place for a 10mm one-stop shop. This they have proved to be, and the Dark Lord and his casting dwarves are very friendly and efficient.

So late Romans eh? You'll like Centurions then.

I've just had a thought. Do you think my painting would get better if I didn't wear the eye patch and electric shock apparatus?

Thanks for being so welcoming, it's nice to have such an active forum. I am already a little stunned by the sheer scale (!) of everything here. Painting in batches of 100  :o also the quality of the Late Romans in that pic is amazing, I am certainly looking forward to getting started on my own figures now.

The extensive catalogue is a fun read in itself....army lists are starting to be written as I browse through it!

Thanks again for the help and warm welcome.

I found the volume of traffic on this forum very daunting when I first joined, and actually I stayed away for a bit because I couldn't find anything that I was looking for.

One thing I now just do is use the "Show unread posts since last visit" button at the top left of the forum page. Its the only way to keep sane when trying to navigate the forum (though I've now dived straight in, and also contribute to the silliness - in the appropriate places of the forum - so I've become acclimatised to the place).

I have to say this is the most friendly and helpful forum that I use.  :-bd

No problems. If you're interested in Red Actions and Central Asia there are some Chinese and Mongol cards available from the Yahoo group or if you PM your email address I can email them to you.

Also, if you're ok with card based activation, you can have a look at Too Fat Lardies 'Triumph of the Will' - http://toofatlardies.co.uk/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=10&products_id=53 (http://toofatlardies.co.uk/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=10&products_id=53), they're getting a bit long in the tooth now but still fun. Their rules 'If The Lord Spares Us' http://toofatlardies.co.uk/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=11&zenid=87fdc62e7087e0414677ad686018d922 (http://toofatlardies.co.uk/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=11&zenid=87fdc62e7087e0414677ad686018d922) have updated mechanisms but narrow the focus to WW1 Middle East. I understand there are some variants for WW1 Western Front and East Africa around.

Feel free to ask about proxies for unavailable troops etc.

Thanks once again for the links Grumpy, I think I will have to but Triumph of the Will. They should work with 10mm? Units fire in groups of 5 so that can be translated as a stand/base in this scale? Again I had never heard of them till I read your post, thank you.

As for the entertaining ballad on cutting fingers, have you ever written one on dropping figures? I seem to be doing that a lot lately!
