Title: Promoting Warband
Post by: mrborges on 17 March 2016, 11:28:00 PM
Hey again folks, so as I'm getting my order ready I am looking ahead at how I'd like to continue promoting Warband.

I've got a friend who is interested in the game, but he is apprehensive because there seems to be very little Warband out there being promoted.  And for such a great game, it's a real shame! Now my other friend who enjoys it has agreed to help me make some more videos.  Likely battle reports and how-to play videos.

I thought maybe a thread to talk about how anyone is promoting the game might be helpful, and maybe some important people,  Leon?, can chime in as well and give us some ideas?

Justin

Check out the Warband Facebook page. Lots here is uploaded there.

I am running a solo campaign with a narrative over on my blog. It's generating a bit of traffic.

It's generated a trickle of interest at the club with those with GW armies showing interest but I manage to get there only infrequently and haven't been able to push the rules that hard.

My regular opponent has played a couple of games but more out of politeness I think. We played 500 points the first time and he felt the force sizes were too small. Second time around we played 1000 points but didn't manage to finish the game due to club AGM same night and me needing to leave early due to an early start at work next day.

Thanks for the post, what kind of things are you thinking?

Currently the main ones would be the Warband Facebook page, plus the Warband banners constantly running on TMP.  We've also sent copies of the rules to all of the major wargames magazines but only one of them has featured Warband so far unfortunately.  Once the remaining armies are complete and online, we'll then start pushing it into the games stores and stockists in the US and elsewhere, I just wanted to have everything available before hitting that side of things.

We've sponsored a couple of UK tournaments so far with prizes, one of which is coming up in a couple of months I believe.

A lot of the mainstream type of promotion you'd see from GW or Mantic is likely our of our budget I'd think, piles of freebies to online reviewers, large sponsorship deals to get it into stores, or heavy discounting to distributors, etc.

We do have some further plans for the ranges to give them a bit more 'wow' factor, but that will be on the cards for after the armies are complete.

You need demo monkeys going into stores and clubs across the uk.

Basically just die hard fans willing to demo to friends, stores and clubs. One in each region. Give them some demo kit, get them to paint it and share it on all forums and local Facebook gaming pages and get demoing. And then everyone will want to play.

I hope Mr Borges doesn't mind me stealing his thunder, but his YouTube channel expands with more excellent Warband videos!

This is more of a Suggestion about promoting the game in general.

1. Need more videos both from community and publishers. I accidentally stumbled upon a war band video however after that one I couldn't find a single other video, so I thought it was a dead game.

When I first heard of infinity it really helped me get into it when I saw it's videos on YouTube.

2. Cover art needs an update, an updated cover makes the game look like it still has life to it. I know some war gamers don't mind old school but I stay away from fear of no one playing it.

Also the art is very important I Want to buy a kings of war book just because of how nice it looks

3. Warband is a little generic maybe adding something to the name would help with search results.

The rules are pretty new, so I don't  they will be getting a new cover any time soon.

Videos are an interesting idea, to me they aren't very important in a game, as most aren't very good. But some well made ones could be good.

Ultimately 10mm is a niche scale and Warband is a new set of rules, it's never going to get the coverage of Black Powder or Kings of War.

Videos are something we've been wanting to do for a variety of things, but the simple answer is that we don't have the space/people/know-how to do them here.  A video-person was one of the areas we were looking to expand into earlier this year, but no takers so far.  We can probably record something basic on our phones, but I'd rather do it properly with lighting, editing, etc.

As fred says, the rules are only a little over a year old, so we wouldn't be looking to do a revamp on them for some time yet.  I get the appeal of WoK and similar rulebooks, but those companies will be spending £1000's on artwork which is way out of our budget.  I saw the new Age of Sigmar rules at a show recently and the amount of 'gamer-porn' in there must have cost a small fortune.

I see Justin appears to be embarking on a video series where he will look at the various aspects of the Warband rules.
I'll be following this series closely. Here's his first offering where he talks mainly about the models and basing available for Warband.
