Post by: Bunny on 17 March 2016, 07:57:23 AM
Hello Knowledge Holders....

English regiment about 1690(ish), red coat, red breaches and stockings with blue cuffs?  Can anyone identify the regiment?

According to my handy reference chart from Sandinista, that's the 1st Regt. of Foot Guards!

Sounds like a good resource, Nathan. You might be right there. Where did you see the uniform you describe, Bunny?  Are you referring to the rank & file or to an officer's uniform? (also, you didn't say if it was a Foot or Horse regiment.) The red breaches and red stockings are throwing me .... but I have to confess my knowledge of 1690'ish uniforms is very poor. In my mind, 1st Foot Guards had blue breeches and stockings  - they almost certainly had blue breaches in the subsequent War of Spanish Succession.

And in this 1685 re-enactors example (see the heading photo in the link below), the rank & file are wearing blue breeches and stockings. However, there is one guy on the right (an officer) who is wearing red breaches (but, unfortunately, white and not red stockings) and another guy on the left (another officer) who is wearing blue breaches but red stockings. Within the link, also click on "What do we do?" for more photos. Of course, uniforms (like soccer strips) have been known to change for a short period then revert back to the original colours.

Sorry to muddy the water again, Bunny.

If Sandinista notices this he can probably tell you what his sources were, but it seems a comprehensive list!

If its foot, Red breeches and stockings are probably Coldstream guards, blue breeches and stockings probably the Foot guards.

Sounds like a good bet, Clib (see link below of Coldstream Guards at Tangier 1680'ish).

Just checked the list I sent Nathan and I have the Coldstreams and the 1st Foot Guards breeches mixed up, idiot and cut & paste error. A couple of other breeches on my list are in the wrong box too, error seems to have been when I combined the horse and foot lists into one table. Arghh X_X X_X  At least in 10mm, only I will notice   :-[

I used Grant's "From Pike to Shot 1685-1720" book as source for most of the English

Now this has been pointed out to me I will have to reflag the units before I can sleep well again >:(

cheers

If its foot, Red breeches and stockings are probably Coldstream guards, blue breeches and stockings probably the Foot guards.

Just checked in Sapherson's booklet, he has that the 1st Footguards in red breeches and the Coldstreams in blue. Is this not a reliable source? This matches the list I sent Nathan.

May not need to change anything after all  :)

Cheers
Ian

Sapherson does indeed have the 1st FG  with red breeches/stockings and the Coldstream blue. However, an extract by Sandford (Lancaster herald of arms during the reign of James I I ) describing James coronation states

1st - " The private soldiers were all new clothed in coats of red broad cloth, lined and faced with blew.Their hats were black, laced about with silver, turned up and garnished with blew ribbons. Their breeches were blew broad cloth and their stockings of blew worsted. "

2nd - " The private soldiers,  viz. Musquetiers,  Pike men and Grenadier,  were in all points armed and accoutred as the first regiment, and agreeable to them in their clothing except their breeches, which were of red broad cloth and their stockings of red worsted. "

So it appears Sapherson is at odds with Sandford even down to the hat lace ( Sandford saying gold for the second). Wether there was a change in uniforms at a later date, which was common at the time with change of colonels?

So with the majority of uniforms in this period, you pays your money and takes your chance. You could be right whatever you choose  😊

So where do do the differing sources come from?

I found C A Sapherson's booklet to be as accurate as you'll need for 10mm.
